Mercury Music prize 2005

I kinda assume since no one has posted a topic on this, that no one particularly gives two shites who wins this, or it's a dead cert.

Anyway, these are the nominees:

Antony and the Johnsons - I Am A Bird Now
Bloc Party - Silent Alarm
Coldplay - X&Y
The Go! Team - Thunder, Lightning, Strike
Hard-Fi - Stars of CCTV
KT Tunstall - Eye to the Telescope
Kaiser Chiefs - Employment
The Magic Numbers - The Magic Numbers
Maximo Park - A Certain Trigger
MIA - Arular
Polar Bear - Held on the Tips of Fingers
Seth Lakeman - Kitty Jay

I dunno, even though the Kaisers are favourites, I wouldn't be surprised to see someone like Maximo Park win.

The Magic Numbers should win it, for me.

Recently been listening to The Go! Team and Antony and the Johnsons, also very good albums.

Bloc Party's album disappointed me. Kaiser Chiefs are good fun and all that, but we've already got the Brit Awards for bands like that, the Mercury Prize should reward something a bit different.

I saw the Magic Numbers at Oxegen, and they were alright. Aside from the two singles I didn't find them that interesting. Might be because I was only there to kill time.

What are the Go! Team and Antony and the Johnsons like?

I saw them at Oxegen too, and I thought they were great. It's unlucky I didn't happen to see you there, being that you would have been the only person at their set not having a great time, since I would have had to beat you up.

The Go! Team are like a happy, mostly instrumental band who use a lot of samples, and Antony and the Johnsons are this weird guy who wants to be a woman but has a fantastic voice.

Something about the Kaiser Chiefs gets on my nerves. I just can't listen to them. Kinda like the Futureheads.

I don't mind their singles, but like I said, Franz Ferdinand won this thing last year and we have the Brits to award well-known chart music. The Mercury Award should try to keep its credibility.

Who were the other nominees last year? The Franz Ferdinand CD was pretty good.

MAGIC NUMBERS WALK OUT ON TOTP

THE MAGIC NUMBERS walked out on their debut appearance on TOP OF THE POPS - claiming one of the presenters made “derogatory, unfunny remarks”.
The band decided not to perform on the show after becoming angered by alleged comments by guest presenter Richard Bacon.
A statement issued by the band reads: “We would like to apologise to anyone who was disappointed by our non-appearance on TOTP on Sunday. (Believe us we were disappointed too).
”Due to derogatory, unfunny remarks made during the guest presenter's introduction to our performance, we felt we had to make a stand and leave. It was an important day for us and should have been special. We didn't take this decision lightly but we stand by it.”
The band were left fuming when they thought Bacon was making a joke about their weight.
A BBC spokesman admitted that Bacon used the word "fat", but claimed it was as a "figure of speech referring to the band's status".
He said: "It was absolutely in no way referring the appearance of any of the band members. Richard was mortified about the misunderstanding and any offence caused so he attempted to apologise personally to the band.
"However, their management denied him access to the band and they decided not to go ahead with their performance on the show."
Since the show moved to a BBC2 slot on Sunday evenings, its audience has fallen significantly.
The Magic Numbers are this week's NME cover stars. For their most revealing interview yet, see the issue which is out today in London and tomorrow (August 10) nationwide.

-------

Apparently Bacon said something like they were a "big fat melting pot" of various influences.

I don't know how that bassist stays that fat. I remember being surprised how much she moved about on stage.
