Junking wifi

For the tech nerds:

I have a router in the basement (54 Mbps 802.11g wireless, standard 10/100 Mbps ethernet) that runs my home network and is connected to a cable modem. The computer I am on is upstairs (approx 60 feet from router). I ran the CNET bandwidth test connected via wireless and got 1878.5 kbps.

I ran a 100 ft Cat5 ethernet cable from my computer to the router and ran the test again and got 3729.4 kbps.

I also did some comparisons for how long it takes to load an MP3 off of the computer that is downstairs. Wifi wasn't even close. I timed a 6 second delay for wireless versus a 2 second delay for wired.

No more wifi for me. Although it is a very nice technology, I need the highest data rate possible for my work. I am mainly sick of packet loss and connectivity problems. The layout of my house isn't good for wifi (too much metal, cable connection on one end of house with comp on the other, etc). Its being used only for my laptops now.
