Wolf Creek

I went and saw Wolf Creek tonight, while i thought it would be scarier than it was, it was still pretty awesome.

This movie comes out in the US on the 25th of December, if you get the chance i would highly recommend it as it has recieved a lot of acclaim here in Australia.

As far as I know it's only "based" on a true story. So while the exact events are probably fabricated, there have been numerous violent backpacker murders in Australia since the early 70s (Ivan Milat is one of the more infamous perpetrators). Wouldn't be surprised if they took pieces from here and there.

It's not based on any one event, ther seems to a bit of the Ivan Milat backpacker murders and the Peter Falconio murder.

the moral of the story is - if you come to Australia backpacking, some cunt is going to kill you.

Yeah, it's based on Ivan Milat and the Falconio murder. But nothing specific about either one of them.

If you go backpacking in the bush, yes - you will get killed

Yeah, undoubtedly. Much like Jaws taught an entire generation about the perils of even looking in the general direction of the ocean, Wolf Creek certainly highlights the downside of the backpacking experience, which almost always ends in someone getting something severed.

I thought it was horrible. It really dragged and wasn't really interesting until the final 30 minutes, and even when it got interesting, it went right back to dragging. There was a huge amount of time spent on the characters, but not much happened with them. And it seemed like the movie completely forgot about the guy character, and when it got back to him, it just ended.

I caught the usage of "That's not a knife, this is a knife," by like thirty minutes. One of my friends said he thought one of the guys in the bar was the seagull in Rescue Rangers, and I said that it is always the same group of Australians in any movie and that soon Paul Hogan would jump out and say, "That's not a knife, this is a knife."

It was pretty damn good as far as these type of movies go. Glad they spent a good 3/4 of the film developping the characters it made the horrific things that happened to them actually have emotional impact.

Yeah, I thought this was a bit above average for indy horror. I connected with the characters well because of the good amount of time spent focusing on them. It made me actually really cheer for them and root against the bad guy. Not all films do that (example: Hollow Man, I wanted the hollow man to kill everyone)

I kinda got the feeling I got when I saw High Tension (AWESOME film)...just lots of brutality.

Just watched this last night. I enjoyed it. Although the first 40-50 minutes is all just setup, I thought it provided some nice tension before the shit hits the fan. It didn't bore me like I had heard back when it came out.

Plus I was cringing at certain scenes and actually hoping the people would escape. Haven't seen Hostel yet so I dunno how it compares. Thought the villian was creepy simply because he seems like a nice guy but is truely a monster, which to me, is much more creepy than a Jason or Freddy type of killer (nothing against them however).

Also, never going to Austrailia. You guys are fucked up.

Everyone I've talked to reckons it's really good.

I wouldn't know though, since when could I afford 8 bucks to see it

Still haven't seen it, and I'm a fucking Aussie. Roger Ebert says I should never see it, I tend to believe that man.

I've heard its meaningless violence. Exploitation can be good, but any fucking idiot can pull that shit out of his ass. You have to get some plot and technique in there. I still think maybe my friend and I should make an Australian horror flick together. Capitalise off WC a bit.

Maybe you could get Doug Basham to star in it.

Ebert is hardly the expert on Horror films

Ha-dee-ha-ha.

It's true Ebert isn't too fond of the horror genre, but he usually gives them a star or two. Zero stars is pretty vicious. If you actually read the review he pretty much states why he can't respect something like that.

Horror these days is pretty tame, in my opinion. These films that try to shock with gore are like the kid in school who pushes the envelope just a little bit further with the teacher. There's a line where it crosses from rebellious to retarded. I mean, this is just my opinion, but I really can't admire a film which is pretty much some people getting tortured, it doesn't take much to conjure it.

It's kind of the same reason I dislike pornography. Sure it gets me off, but I cannot respect the women who do it, because they do something any girl can do and get paid for it. No skill required. Give me the budget and I will make a film about a little girl being raped and tortured by her sick uncle. I'm a horror genius.

Horror got bored of scaring, so it started making loud noises when you didn't expect it, then it got repetitive and lame so now you have guys like Eli Roth trying to shock. I'll take it over crap like The Grudge, but I pretty much became disgusted by the style when Eli Roth said he wanted the woman who had a heart attack watching Hostel to die for publicity. It just screamed egotistical to me; that he thinks his movie is worthy of being shocking enough for someone to die over. I can enjoy the little bits of violence here and there, who doesn't love seeing implied torture, but then he had to ruin it for me by acting as if his film is amongst the most shocking ever made. It went from being good, pointless fun to being softcore exploitation.

If I'm going to enjoy the style again, there needs to be a director who makes a film which makes me think he might just want to make a fun movie, instead of making it a "serious" one. Hostel and Wolf Creek both seem like they have ADHD and want to push the envelope as far as possible.

The whole point of Hostel, and Eli Roth's stuff, is to have fun. It's a throwback to the old 70s exploitation, grindhouse flicks. I'm loving every minute of it. So much better than the 90s slasher shit we had going for a while.

Hostel wasn't even that gorey. The thing that creeped me out about it was the idea that these people are so bored with their lives and money, that they have resorted to killing someone for fun. That's fucking scary to me. Add to the fact that he got the idea from a website that advertised this type of thing, only he couldn't tell if it was real or not. Christ. That's fucked up.

The movie was horrible.

By the time the good shit was going down, I was cheering for the murderer for the "backpackers" being such dumbfucks. They deserved to die and me and some friends cheered when they got violently destroyed.

I hate stupid people even when they are in character.

Hostel not even being that gorey is my biggest problem with it. Here is Eli Roth hoping people had heart attacks over his film, and he was too pussy to even go over the top with it all. It just doesn't add up. Either make it a fun horror film or make it a gorefest. Don't be stuck on the fence.
