Not sure if this is pertinent, but...

Apparently Sony has stated that they will not be making any more of the PSOne console.

Frankly, I'm surprised that they haven't done this sooner. I know it bugged me really bad when I had the urge to buy a Playstation One game, and realize that our entertainment stores around here (aside from EBGames, naturally. I refuse to buy from Gamestop, even though the two merged. Hate Gamestop.) didn't carry PS1 games anymore. Took me forever to track down the original MGS.

As long as the PS games have been outsourced, I was really surprised when I heard they weren't releasing any more of the original PS1s.

They've only just stopped making them? Bloody hell.

Yeah, I honestly had no idea they still made or sold those.

It's the end of the next generation's cycle, they never should have made the remodeled PSOnes for more than a year because the PS2 plays PSX games anyway...

Word. By that same token, why is the Nintendo 64 not discontinuing NOW, as opposed to it discontinuing like 3 years ago when it did? It's not like Sony's made any more consoles than Nintendo has (less, actually).

Maybe it's because people had more to do with the PS? It seems like wherever I went, the original Playstation was favored over the N64. I'm not discrediting either one of them, but I'm frankly surprised that this is just NOW happening as well.

My guess would be because the games were on cartridges, which are much more expensive to manufacture than disks. I've seen new, sealed PSX games for $1 some places. I've seen them in below $5 stores, etc. It's because disks are much cheaper and if N64 games were selling for that cheap the manufacturers would probably be taking a loss.

Naw. Cart technology isn't significantly expensive these days. IT's more simply common sense. Nintendo may choke the market with Game Boy X's, but they're smarter than to sell a system with almost no need for production.
