Wrestling's Greatest Feuds: Vol 3
Hi and welcome back to my next installment of Wrestling’s Greatest Feuds Today we look back at a feud that I never thought in a million years would happen. There are moments throughout wrestling history in which sometimes we just couldn’t see coming, moments that literally shock us, moments which we will never forget. If you watched WCW Slamboree 1998, you know what I’m talking about.
Scott Hall vs Kevin Nash The Outsiders Call them the Outsiders, call them the Wolfpac, call them the Cliq, or call them two Best Friends. They were Scott Hall and Kevin Nash. You would think they were brothers as they seemed inseparable. There on-screen chemistry in WCW was as real as it could get. As two of the three founding fathers of the New World Order, they did whatever they wanted, whenever they wanted. Whether it be attacking WCW wrestlers, or clowning around backstage, or announcing WCW shows or putting themselves over everyone else all day long, these two made the perfect pair. As the Outsiders, they held numerous WCW Tag Team Titles and got the babyface pops of the New World Order, even though they were heels. The audience loved these guys and really, how could you not? The Order Splits Sometime around the beginning-mid 1998, the New World Order split into two factions, nWo Hollywood and nWo Wolfpac. Hollywood Hogan and Kevin Nash would become the leaders of their groups respectively. Around this time, Scott Hall had been out of action for a while, so he had not officially been part of either. Most of us fans at home just assumed he would go with his best friend Kevin Nash and be a part of the Wolfpac. Nash would make references to Scott Hall on Nitro sometimes, which mainly said the Wolfpac had a spot for him. Finally, Scott Hall would make his long awaited return to WCW at the PPV, Slamboree 1998. He would once again tag with his best friend, but little did we know the plan Hall had in mind. End of an Era So we go to Slamboree 1998. The Outsiders vs Sting and The Giant. Sting had been a babyface at this time, but for some reason I forget, he had to tag with The Giant, who was a member of the Hollywood faction. The match went pretty much how everyone expected it to go with the Outsiders. Same old moves, same old tricks, same old chemistry between the two. The match seemed like it was in the bag for the Outsiders…and then it happened. It’s funny, usually I’ll know what’s going to happen when I see certain situations set up in the ring. When you’ve been watching wrestling for so long like I have, you get accustomed to the same old setups. If it was any other two wrestlers besides Hall and Nash, I probably would of seen it, but it didn’t hit me until it happened. Nash was in the ring getting ready to powerbomb the Giant. He was going for the finish. The referee was distracted by Dusty Rhodes, who had accompanied Giant to the ring. Here comes Scott Hall. Hall picks up the tag belt that was lying in the ring and with one unforgettable strike, blasts Kevin Nash right in the head with it. It’s as if the scene weren’t real. Like you were thinking Hall fucked up and meant to hit Giant. The entire audience that you saw on camera stood up simultaneously. They were shocked as well. You could see people in the audience turning to each other like “what in the hell?” Hall pulled Giant on Nash and the ref counted 3. After the match Hall hugged the Giant and Rhodes and buried Nash in his Wolfpac shirt. It was Over. The War Among Brothers Scott Hall had been planning his attack on Kevin Nash all along. He had joined Hollywood Hogan’s group long before any of us ever knew. Hall did an interview basically saying he was going through some hard time financially and Hogan was there for him, while Nash wasn’t. He said he goes where the most money is and that was with Hogan. Well at least he was being honest, right? A couple of weeks later, Hogan and Hall got into an argument, which wound up with Hogan attacking Hall. Nash came down for the save and gave Hall the Wolfpac Sign and Hall returned it. But once again Hall swerved Nash and attacked again. That was the last straw for Nash and the match was made. The angle also featured Scott Hall playing the part of an alcoholic, which wasn’t very far fetched, and Hall would bash Kevin Nash every chance he could on the mic. The alcohol thing was pretty dumb I thought, but you really wanted to see Hall get his ass kicked by the time the match rolled around. At Halloween Havoc 1998, Scott Hall faced off against Kevin Nash for the first time in WCW. The match was pretty heated and they both went at it hard. The end saw Nash powerbomb Hall a few times, before walking out of the match and getting counted out. Hall won the match, but Nash just wanted to teach him a lesson. The two would reunite again 2 months later when Hall helped Nash win the Title from Bill Goldberg, but that’s for another time. Adios. Send Feedback or Requests for Feuds to jes_pac2001@yahoo.com |
