Chris Jericho to rock Celebrity Duets

On Aug. 29, the rest of the world will find out what Jerichoholics and friends of Fozzy already know: Chris Jericho rocks. The former WWE Superstar will be competing on an American Idol-esque TV show called Celebrity Duets that pits celebrities known for things other than singing against each other. Each week, the celebrities will team up with a different recording industry legend to perform.

"The singers that are involved are some of the greatest singers of all time, which is what really got me interested in the project; people like Smokey Robinson, Cyndi Lauper, the Black Crowes, Clint Black, Tim McGraw, Chaka Khan, Kenny Loggins, Christina Aguilera, the list goes on and on," said Jericho.

Even though he and his band Fozzy have released a number of albums and toured the world, Jericho doesn't think he has an unfair advantage.
"The thing that's cool about the show is they were really meticulous on who they got as the celebrities to sing," he said. Lucy Lawless performed on Broadway in Grease and Jai Rodriguez was in Rent on Broadway. Hal Sparks has a band. Cheech sang "Earache My Eye" in the 70s. Everybody's got some chops. I mean they really did not want it to be a train wreck. They wanted it to be really, really good."

Even with his extensive credentials, landing a part on the show was no cakewalk. He had to sing one song of his choosing and one song from a list he received just hours before the audition.


"I got this list of songs, and it's all like Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin, Celine Dion, Etta James and some of the greatest singers ever; and it was like wow, this is hard stuff," Jericho exclaimed. "Right at the very end of the list I saw Spinning Wheel by Blood, Sweat and Tears; it's a song from the early 70s. The guy's voice is kind of similar to mine, and I was like 'Hallelujah.' I was like I think I can do that... I went into the studio and laid it down twice. And then the song I chose was Enter Sandman by Metallica. I figured I'm just going to go for the throat you know. I'm a rock guy; this is what I do, make no bones about it."


Jericho's audition was sent over to Executive Producer Simon Cowell of American Idol fame. Cowell liked what he heard and the Sexy Beast was offered a spot on the show.

"Everyone says 'Oh Simon's so intimidating. What are you going to say?' And I was like, 'I worked for Vince McMahon for six years; ain't nobody more intimidating than that.' Simon Cowell is a mere child compared to Vince McMahon."

With the auditions over, Y2J sizes up the competition.

"I wouldn't go into the competition if I didn't think I could win it," he bragged. "I think that Lucy Lawless is going to be tough because she has such a huge fan base, but then again, so do I... Hal Sparks is kind of similar to what I do. He's got a rock band, he's a funny guy, he's kind of the same age as me, so I think he and I will be kind of indirectly in competition… It's funny because he and I are on every VH1 show ever, so it's like we already have a connection as it is."

Jericho did not know who he would be paired with when WWE.com spoke to him, but that did not seem to matter.

"I'm really looking forward to it because there's so many different styles and so many different types of singers, so it's going to be a challenge for me. I'm a rock singer, but rock is derived from blues which is kind of a component of soul music as well... Even country music has a real rock vibe to it sometimes. I'm going to have to really work hard to draw the most out of my voice."

The Ayatollah of Rock N' Rolla is excited about being exposed to an audience that may not be familiar with his work.

"I'm going to have to prove myself to a whole new fan base to really take it to the next level. But that doesn't mean that I don't need every single bit of support from all of the Jerichoholics out there. We've got to show them that the Jerichoholics are stronger than the Xenaphiles."

Which means more walk on roles for Keibler! Sequel to Bubble Boy anyone? Or she could be cut out of Big Momma's House 3. Point is, like in all popular reality shows, things look hot for a moment and everyone just forgets about you. Don't look for Keibler to be some sort of breakout star.

IMO, Jericho was a big loss for the WWE. I mean he wasn't a draw like Austin or The Rock but he was one of the reasons I would be excited to watch Raw.

I don't know, the number of successes out of reality shows is pretty small.

I'm not going to call Jericho a joke for this (being in a Sci-Fi Channel movie, however), but it seems that, for him, it's a lateral step at best. Most of the celbrities are usetabes, and there's a damn good chance Chris gets slapped in that category. I don't wish this on him, but let's be realistic.

You have people you never really hear of anymore, but they won $1 Million dollars. To me that's a success. People making 50K a year need to work 20 years to get that same $1 mill. I'd say they're not famous, but successful from a reality show, yes.

Then there's those I mentioned from American Idol, one of which I included that was a not a winner. (Aitken) Canadian Idol has opened doors for singers up here, that's success. There are Euro and Aussie players as well. You've got a reality show that awarded the winner of it's show to become the new lead singer of INXS.... I'd say there has been a lot of success that have come from reality shows. Shit. Even that Kooky Korean that sang really bad got @ 250K and 15+ minutes of fame off of "She Bangs".

Its a stupid reality show full of semi-celebrities..what is the big deal? It is not like Jericho is some well known name who has seen his career fall off, he is a former professional wrestler.

People loved Who Wants to be a Millonare, Survivor and American Idol so networks just try to do these spinoffs and just pump out stupid shit. Ratings must be good enough since they just keep doing the same shit. Reality TV dominates the airwaves now but I do not see the attraction of these shows at all.

3 vs 100,000+ doesn't sound like a good prospect. Lets think about all the reality stars who cant get work because of their "success." Reality TV puts a negative stigma on people. Have there been successes? A couple. But how many more failures? The bad greatly out weighs the good.

And as far as Jericho being a joke between Fozzy, that shite Sci-Fi movie, The Best Week Ever tv show, all those I Love bs spots full of self admitted has beens, Top 101 E! shows, and now this, lookin like a joke to me. Is he making money? Of course. But hey maybe he and Johnny Fairplay can have a match. To see who was more "successful."

First off, with the exception of the VERY few, reality TV is only the chance to have 15 seconds of fame. I searched high and low for reality stars getting black listed but I couldn't find the articles I was looking for. I will say that I have heard on several occasions (mostly from her, but not excluded to) that Jenna Lewis (Survivor) has been blacklisted. No matter where she auditions she is given the same reason for not giving her the part: she's from survivor, no one would take her seriously. Same with Steven Hill (Real World,) Tanya Cooley (Real World,) Johnny Fairplay (survivor,) Reichen Lehmkuhl (Amazing Race 4 [well that and he's gay,]) and Toni Ferrari (Love Cruise, Paradise Hotel.) All these people have tried to make it in Hollywood and failed due to their "success."

But I couldn't find anything backing up my claims so instead I found list of Reality TV shows that were canceled or just flops, a lot of these were canceled at or before 13 episodes:

There are only a few houndred more but I 'm bored with it. He's got some good chances. As far as Jericho goes, considering how unsuccessful he has been at everything in his career I can't see how he cant be viewed as a joke on principle. The only thing he had success at was wrestling, and a lot of people would consider him a failure at that due to his title reign. I fan of fan of Jericho's work in the ring, but if he is gonna go out and make a star of himself, the least he could is to be good at something. Right now national attention for being a jackass is his best chance. Although Jericho being the male Amerosa would be cool.
