MLB Trade Deadline?

I thought the deadline passed like two months ago. How are there still like 978253 trades being made? Never understood this. Can ne1 explain, thanks.

there is a "waiver deadline," im not exactly sure what it is but a team can put a player on waivers then another team can claim him (but that does not mean they automatically get him on their team), and if they wanna trade the second team has to put a player(s) on waivers and they can trade. i'm probably entirely wrong, but i dunno.

also the waiver deadline is either tonight at midnight or it happened like 3 hours ago.

Yeah, if you put a player on waivers and nobody claims him, he can be traded to any team. If he gets claimed, you have to either work out a trade with the team that claimed him or pull him off waivers.

Yeah I believe the deadline is tonight for that as rumors are David Wells will get traded to the Padres and it must be done by tonight.

There really isn't a trade deadline if you think about it in baseball. There's July thirty first which is the non waiver deadline, meaning players can be traded to a team without clearing waivers.

August thirty first is the deadline in which a player can be dealt and put on a postseason roster. Anyone dealt after midnight tonight cannot be put on the new teams' postseason roster.

The July deadline is mainly to make sure your team gets the player they want and that player does not have to clear waivers, where anyone can claim him

Don't understand why more teams don't jump on players going through waivers.

JohnnyDrama does not have that much rep yet (10+)
This expains it pretty well..

http://www.athomeplate.com/waiverdeals.shtml

The signifigance of the July 31st deadline is that before that date, teams can trade whomever they want, to whoever they want, without their players having to clear waivers. After that, teams have to go through a lot of work in order to obtain a player via trade. Mainly it would seem only veteran players like Wells or guys with big contracts (Manny Ramirez, Andruw Jones) can slip through waivers. Teams are afraid to claim some of these guys because, as in the Randy Myers situation, they could claim a guy who is not having a good year but is due a ton of money. The website didn't explain this well, but apparently a team can decide to just dump a player on a team who claims him.

It's a pretty confusing process, but simply put, it's a lot easier to trade a guy before the July 31st deadline.

You guys pretty much have it right.

It is a soft deadline, but after it, it prevents team from trading whatever they want.
