Rey To Be Known Simply As 'Mysterio'

Quote:
It has been reported that WWE will be dropping the 'Rey' from former World Champion Rey Mysterio's ring name. This is to avoid any possible offense caused to Australian viewers after legendary Croc' Hunter Steve Irwin was killed by a Stingray while filming an underwater documentary in Queensland.

This will not be the first time WWE have acted quickly to avoid public outcry. The Muhammad Hassan character was removed from WWE TV immediately following the terror attacks in London last year.

Rey Mysterio was said to be upset at the idea of dropping part of his name, after he had already dropped the Jr. from his name at the start of his WWE tenure.

WWE management believes that Mysterio's marketability will not be adversely affected by the change, and lists Lashley and Finlay as examples of superstars growing in popularity after dropping their first names.
