Old systems ruled

You know, I find myself enjoying older systems more than the newer ones. Nintendo, Sega Genisus, N64 etc seem to be more enjoyable than all the newer stuff thats out. Maybe the newer games are too "realistic" or something. Am I alone on this?

I love N64. The games on there were, for the most part, ahead of their time. Games like Goldeneye 007, New Tetris, and WWF No Mercy were among the best.

Don't forget Perfect Dark and Conker's Bad Fur Day..

I have said this before but everyone should get a Yobo..

I have the NES one..

They also make on for Sega Gennesis, I think..

It's a new console (console, two controllers, ac adaptor, and av cable connection) for original NES games.. It is even compatable with the original controllers and Zapper..

NICE

I have the officially released NES top loader (which is pretty rare). The "new" ones are out because Nintendo and Sega have (I believe) lost their patents or something to that affect.

But yeah, i concur, old systems rock, but NES is the fucking man. I'm gonna set up my NES and buy some NES games off of eBay this week I think.

What is it about the older systems though? Is it because they're not as realistic or what? It could be because you didn't really have to think a whole lot. For instance Super Mario. You hold down run, go right, and jump a lot. Pretty basic.

A part of it for me atleast, is the "gamey" aspect.. The simplisticness (is that even a word??).. Driving games now are "driving simulators" etc..

The realisticness takes away from the "flight and fantasy" aspect..

I dunno..

A lot of it is nostalgia. No matter how you look at it, modern gaming systems kick the shit out of the older ones, but because we grew up with them, they hold sentimental value.

Just like in twenty years, kids today will talk about how old systems like the Xbox and PS2 were the shit.

I miss "pick up and play" games. Though I'd probably hate it if they were all like SMB. I also miss the days when games were actually hard. I also miss it not being entirely about what franchise you could spam to the market.

I was thinking recently about how a lot of games on older systems had a great arcade feel. Games today don't have that. I miss just fun shooting, fighting, or action games where the primary focus was on having fun. I wish there were more console games today that are similar to Turtles in Time, Street Fighter, and the fucking awesome X-Men arcade game with two screens.

Some games today still have an arcade feel but not as much obviously. Games can be way more realistic these days... which is what most people want.

I'd just like a healthy balance of realistic and arcade games.

That's cause most companies are trying to make "interactive experiences" or "playable movies" rather then just games.

I will get them one day..

I used to play all sorts of sports titles because they were fun. Now you have to memorise like 80 different combinations to do simple things in sports games. So I can agree on the realism.

Granted, it can be frustrating to play a game with only two buttons, but now you have the PS2 with 10 buttons and three control pad/sticks. Often time two of those are used for extra buttons. And then there's the combinations. You practically need a keyboard to play these games, and that's the main reason I don't play computer games often anyway.

Super Metroid remains one of my favorite games ever. And yes, I agree the simplicity of 2d games can be a large factor in why they are so fun.

Agreed. A great great game

To mne, when you talk about old, you're talking SNES and Genesis. i'm sorry, I don't count N64 which was 97 or 98 I believe to be old.

SNES has some great great games. Donkey Kong Country, Chrono Trigger, Link to the Past, the aforementioned Super Metroid. I can proudly say I still have a working SNES and routinely bring it out to play some of the classics.

In my opinion, those games had what today's games lack. Pick-up-and-play-ability. You could pick up a DK Country or a Super Metroid and learn to play in about 5 minutes. Now today, with games striving for realism and whatnot, the game needs to simulate whatever it is trying to simulate. As a result, you have to be able to do EVERYTHING you'd see in the real world eqivalent of the game. This makes for complex controls and something you can't play without putting a bunch of time in to learning the controls. For example, one of my favorites is Gran Turismo, but you can't play that game without going through all the license tests and so forth, which is fine, but sometimes you want something that's just fun to pick up and play a la Burnout Revenge. That's the difference, in my opinion, playabilty.

the complication of the controllers too, is a big downfall. Like if you play alot and get really good and your buddy comes over, he really can't even play with you because you have mastered the controller and it's intricacies so well. In the old days, the controller was a simple things that you could master very quickly and play the game on.

What Your Hero said... there's nothing worse than playing a game your good at with someone who's never played it.

you gotta give props to the sega saturn.. for those of you who never experienced it you're really missing out. Buy one off E-bay with Panzer Dragoon saga - and you'll be in a gamer heaven.
