You mean UFC pre-weight classes and fighting more than once a night?
That was pretty fucking crazy. No way it could have lasted like that, but damn, it was wild. There were a lot of guys that just thought they were tough, and no doubt they were, but they were out classed. No all the guys are better trained and more complete fighters. |

I prefer the new UFC, but seeing Royce Gracie mess up guys that were like 80-100 pounds bigger then him is one of the greatest things ever to watch.

Regulated UFC kicks it's ass. With the way the sport evolved, it would be a total borefest watching the likes of Andrei Arlovski murdering Matt Hughes because of HUGE weight differences.

And some guys are just plain bigger and stronger then they were back then.

The current UFC is not only better, but the fights and fighters are so much superior than they were on a mass level of the early days. I fuckin hate Joe Rogan but he makes a damn good point in that since MMA's conception the art of fighting as evolved as much in the past decade then in the last few centuries. The current stars of UFC (Liddell, Ortiz, Hughes, etc.) would walk all over people in similar weight classes from 10 years ago.
Now that brings up the point of weight restriction. Personally, I think it needs to happen. While seeing Gracie physically disect someone twice his size is something that every fan of fighting should see at least once, he was a rare exception. For the most part, it's simple fact, big man squash little man. Always going to be examples outside of this, but come on now, if we took Sean Sherk and pitted him against Tim Sylvia...is anyone questioning what the result would be? Weight class actually makes fights better and more exciting. I LOVE old school UFC stuff. Infact I tend to watch my old VHS tapes of them more than I do my newer UFC DVDs...but that time is over, and I am glad we have UFC as it is right now. Personally I would make it three weight classes instead of five...a 145-170, a 171-205 and a 205+...but that's just my personal opinion. |

I have not watched much old UFC but I would like to see guys of different sizes fighting. Mabye have a 150-180, 180-210, 210+. I think fighting people the same size over and over will get boring.

they should do an old school type PPV, and have guys fight regardless of their weight

The fans would eat it up, but with all the money in MMA now a days it would be next to impossible to get people to sign up out of fear of being made to look weak/injury. Also I don't know that they could get that past any type of athletic commission...But I would LOVE to see some shit like that...
