Canada and sport.
Just watching Hockey and Don Cherry brought something up that I had overlooked. We rule. This is what we're talking about.
MVP Basketball - Steve Nash, Canada MVP Hockey - Joe Thorton, Canada MVP (AL) Baseball - Justin Morneau, Canada With a population of @ 33 million, that's pretty impressive and worthy of a little horn blowing. So yeah. Be proud, Canadians. |

So basically what you're saying is all Americans are fat?
BTW, I was just watching Grapes as well. Surprised he didn't defend Darcy Tucker being a bitch. |

It was heartbreaking to watch the Oilers and Flames lose the last 2 Stanley Cups to southern teams whose best players are Canadian. About what Grapes was speaking about, all the guys his listed off were from BC, so the question was, what is it about BC that's producing all these MVPs? |

BC has easily the best baseball program in Canada, we are years ahead of the rest of Canada in that respect. I would attribute that for BC's dominance as Canada's leading suppliers of baseball players. As for the other stuff, I really can't say.

He hit Chara (clean hit), guy pokes him in the back of the leg as if to say "let's go," Tucker turns around and two hand punches him in the face. Fucking chickenshit. Nice to see somebody actually go with him though even with the instigator. Leaf fans are horrible.

Obviously Hero didn't get the message that Shaq is the best player in NBA history and singlehandedly won four championships, but he gets screwed out everytime. He is the rightful MVP forever.

You are right Y2C. Now I'm not taking anything away from Australia, they are awesome. Canada's problem however is funding. Although there is an attempt to fund amateur athletes better (2010 Olympics coming to Canada) is it far too little and will fall short and I suspect once the 2010 Olympics pass that funding may dwindle. Amateur athletes in Canada live below the poverty line, many in destitute conditions, because of this they do not get the same level of training, let alone sustained training. Those that have excelled in the past really need to be congratulated as they did it under really adverse conditions. I wish Canada was more like Australia (from what I understand) in terms of funding their amateur sports. This not only includes money for coaches, but for housing and food and everything else.

Ya, you can't really be a full time amature athlete in Canada. Few jobscare if you're an athlete or not. Home Depot however, does have an amature athlete program, not sure how exactly it works but I think it gives them total flexibility on their schedule and pays 40 hours a week even if you only worked 20 or something.
The reason for Canada not being more like Australia is that here too many people are blind to the benefits of sport. We have a hard enough time cleaning up a scuzzy area by putting a 20000 seat soccer stadium there. |

Do Canadian sports get funded on a medal basis? IE if you guys win Gold at a given sport then do they put a certain amount of dollars into that sport? Coz that's what happens with some of our sports, especially the ones that aren't hugely followed in the country (like skating, etc) Canada has produced some alright individuals ins sporting teams, but in terms of team sports or individual sports, they often get less medals & stuff that what I'd expect.
Australia won't be as good during the next olympics due to the retirement of Ian Thorpe, so that'll be about 6 less gold medals. |

You also have to consider that the geography of Canada can be decieving to how many people actually live there. The United States is a huge country geographically, and it has 300,000,000 people living there. Canada has more land mass than the United States, but a mere 30,000,000 people living there. To put that in perspective, California has 36,000,000. So the whole state of California has more people than all of Canada.
So while simple thinking would lead one to believe that Canada should be more equal to the United States in terms of athletics, it really is not comparable at all. Canada is a wide expanse of land that has a similar population as Morocco. I would say that considering the spread of Canadian folk throughout such a large area, the nation is doing alright in terms of athletics. It could be better, but it is not fair to compare it to the U.S. or China because the populations are just not even close. |

I think a Canadian athlete who gets a medal gets some money put into a trust fund until he retires. They get paid, but not until after they're done.

I'd have to look it up, Y2C. Athletes that do win gold medals or become popular get endorsement deals (obviously), not the same thing, but a spin off effect.
