Borat 2

Yep, apparently it's coming.

High five! Murdoch signs up Borat 2

By Aline van Duyn in New York

Published: February 8 2007 17:03 | Last updated: February 8 2007 17:03

Sacha Baron Cohen has signed up to do a sequel to his popular Borat movie based on the controversial Kazach journalist, according to Rupert Murdoch, chairman and chief executive of News Corp, whose film division last year released the first Borat film.

Mr Baron Cohen is currently working on a film to follow Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan, but it will be based on another one of his characters, Bruno, a gay Austrian fashion show presenter.

Universal Studios won the rights to the new film last year. However, once that is completed, Mr Baron Cohen will “come back and do Borat Two,” Mr Murdoch said during an interview at a conference in New York.

The revelation of plans for another Borat movie, which have not been announced by Mr Murdoch’s film studios or Mr Baron Cohen, will come as some surprise as the huge popularity of Borat has led people to believe it would be hard for the character to continue to fool people into speaking to him.

Mr Murdoch said his 20th Century Fox film division did look at buying the rights to the Bruno movie but that they were not prepared to outbid rivals as Mr Baron Cohen “would not even show us the script”.

The Borat movie has generated huge earnings for News Corp, and its film division reported record earnings on Wednesday.

Mr Murdoch, speaking at a conference organised by McGraw-Hill, said he had seen the first Borat movie three times and “laughed like hell”.

Fox has already backpedaled on that.

From IMDB.

Demonstrating once again that reporters can't trust a single source -- even if the source is as estimable as the chairman of News Corp -- news organizations on Thursday quickly spread the word that 20th Century Fox was planning a sequel to its 2000 hit Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan. During a conference call on Thursday morning, Rupert Murdoch said that after Borat star Sacha Baron Cohen completes the forthcoming Bruno for Universal, "then he'll come back and do a Borat 2" for Fox. "He's signed up to do a sequel for us." (He added that he had seen the original film three times and "laughed like hell.") Murdoch's announcement was news to 20th Century Fox itself, which, after reports of the deal hit the news wires, released a statement through a spokesman saying that while there had been "casual discussions" with Cohen about a sequel, "it remains too preliminary to discuss."

Ive heard on a bunch of different news sources that Cohen has decided to get rid of the Borat character. (They referred to it as killing him off) Because of all the press and buzz from the movie, he is to recognizable to to another movie. There is no way he could get by on the streets as the Borat character with out someone noticing him.

Basically what I figured. There's no way he'd not get recognized now. However, Time magazine did report that during the filming of Borat they did collect enough raw footage for 2 feature length fims, so maybe oon the DVD release they'll still have more "new" stuff.

Source: Variety by: Mike Sampson

Chairman of News Corp., Fox's parent company, Rupert Murdoch spoke yesterday at a New York media event seemingly confirming the studio would reteam with Sacha Baron Cohen on BORAT TWO. Only problem was the news of a sequel was news to Fox execs and Cohen himself. Cohen's reps say there is no, nor was there ever, a deal on the table for Cohen to star in a sequel. A Fox spokesman said that they had "casual discussions" about a sequel with Cohen but hardly anything that could be considered a done deal (Murdoch said BORAT TWO would be Cohen's next film after BRUNO). Even more puzzling was Murdoch's explanation of why they passed on BRUNO if they were so eager to work with Cohen again. He said the package was too expensive ($42 million paid by Universal) but a BORAT TWO deal, where the character is a proven commodity, would be easily more expensive to put together. Nevermind the logistical trouble in pulling off a sequel when the character became so popular and fooling the public would become near impossible. Cohen's next film will be SWEENEY TODD with Tim Burton and the actor has been working on BRUNO in the meanwhile.

I doubt there will be a Borat 2 mainly because Cohen left the UK after Ali G became too recognisable, so after Borat blowing up so big there is no way people wouldn't recognise him.

Borat in Japan would be pretty hilarious. I think it is safe to see Japanese reacting to strange things is always a success.
