Greatest World Title Reign

What do you think was the greatest world title reign? By this I mean, the match they won, the match they lost, and everything in between.

I would go with either Flair's 2 year run in the early 80s, or Michaels first run.

HBKs might not have drawn well but he was booked well against some great opponents, and he helped build alot of guys. Even when he went over he made them look good. He had a few good feuds, with Diesel, Davey Boy, Vader, he brought Mankind into the Main event, Got Sid Over. I loved that whole run. Everything about it was good. This is just my personal Fav.

What do you guys think? Your choices?

I was gonna say Michaels first run. The runs of the pre-modern era were long and great, but they often times weren't as eventful.

If Austin's first reign lasted longer, it'd be pretty epic. In fact, if you don't count the 24 hour loss to Kane, it's a pretty good one.

Ric Flair, NWA World Heavyweight Championship, November 26, 1987 to February 20, 1989.

Won it from Ronnie Garvin in a Steel Cage Match at the first NWA Pay Per View StarrCade (Note: it wasn't the first StarrCade event, but it was the first PPV). His fued with Lugar was fantastic. We began to see Sting as a star during Flair unmatched ability to put others over while he was The Man. The Horsemen were riding strong though most of this reign. And it ended with one of the most legendary and talked about matches of all time when he finally dropped the title to Ricky Steamboat. Just an incredible World Title reign, no matter how you measure success.

Nice one. I enjoyed his run after Steamboat too. Horseman vs J-Tex was an amazing run. Some of the best matches I have seen. Flair VS Funk has to be one of the most under-rated fueds ever. Everything they did was fucking gold. The Plastic Bag, Thunderdome, I Quit...I remember when Funk Pile-drove Flair through a table, it was the first time I had seen anything like that. They made a young MAH believe they were really going to kill each other, It was REAL TO ME! By far Funk;s greatest work, and some of my favorite Naitch.

I'm going to have to give that some real thought. But Rob Van Dam's 23 month TV Title reign could have been the best of all time if he actually dropped the title and didn't get injured. For example say he was put in a title for title match with the World Champion and the world champion beat him in like a 30 minute match that would have been an epic title reign.

However his losing the title due to injury helped his credability.

Austin didn't really have a great reign though. It was a tad short, and IMO his best work was in the time where he was on the quest for getting the title back and fighting an uphill battle against the boss of the company.

When I think of great title reigns I think of Flair and Hogan in the old days, simply because they were more of 'reigns'. In the modern era, "reigns" don't really exist and the term is used loosely. And thats fine, it's the way things are and it doesn't detract from the wrestlers.

So I'd say Austin had one of the best "runs" ever. Which means his stint as the top guy and main event, even though there were various short title reigns along the way. But as for the best modern title reign, I would have to say HBK in 96.

Seems like anytime a wrestler puts together a lengthy reign in modern wrestling it gets looked upon as being stale or holding the entire roster down. Triple H, Cena, JBL have had lenghty and pretty prestigious reigns on paper (for modern times), but they've come under huge criticism and recieved heat from fans for "sucking" and holding everyone else down.

He didn't cheat at No Way Out in the barb wire steel cage match. He didn't make Bigshow chokeslam him through the ring, thus allowing him (JBL) to crawl out the bottem. That wasn't cheating.

Brock Lesnar's fight reign was cool... his matches with Undertaker were cool, and the match with Big Show at Survivor Series 2002 was awesome... the guy suplexed big show... belly to bellyed Big Show... and finally, when he got him on his shoulders for the F5 who can say the didn't freak out? (Sure, it's been done to death now, but back then it was new).

I really enjoyed JBL's as well. Some of the matches were awesome and the feuds were well played out.

Another is Benoits. Even though is was booked second under Triple H VS Shawn Michaels, it was still an awesome reign for me simply because it was Benoit.

I may take alot of flack for this but I figured I would think outside the box.

How bout the Famous Moolah's Title Reign. It started in I believe 1956 and lasted until 1984.

That's almost 30 years. Thats gotta deserve some consideration.

Kevin Nash's title run when he beat Goldberg and then about a week later got knocked out by Hogan's devistating finger push to the chest.

Hogan running a rampage on WCW was pretty fun. Used to make me so mad as a mark.
