I think he's a pretty solid worker and other wrestlers seem more entertaining when put in a match with him.

Was - No.

He truly was fantastic for a long time. Actually knew how to play the crowd, knew how to pace a match, knew how to use pshycology. He doesn't do any of that anymore, which is why I don't hold McMahon entirely to blame for him becoming "watered down." He did a lot of that to himself when he stopped giving a fuck, which he clearly has.

Calling him a spot monkey is bullshit. Well I will defend him in saying the first and foremost goal is to entertain the crowds and put asses in seats, and he does that. Not to mention he's an exciting and skilled performer. He has all unique moves and is a good worker.
He's not Kurt Angle, but he's something special all his own.

Yes he cashes in on spots, but what who cares? All wrestlers hit notes along the way and use their movesets. So if he can bust big spots and incredibly visually impressive moves out of his arsenal to help the match, then he should. He's not the best wrestler in the world, so anyone who says that would be overrating him. But to say he's overrated under the idea that the general consensus is "he's a great performer and damn good worker", then no, he's deserving of that credit and far from overrated.

Modern day Rob Van Dam is overrated. I stand by that. Not saying he doesn't have all the potential in the world to light a fire under the crowd's ass, but honestly, he's done that ONCE in the past 3 or 4 years and that was at ONS II. That's it.

ECW and Early WWE RVD? Nope

Now? Somewhat. His matches on raw and smackdown all looked the same. Routine spots, occasionaly doing something special for a PPV. WHen WWECW started he went back to putting on great matches every week again.

I don't think RVD is overrated now, becasuse in order to be over-rated you have to be actually rated first.

I agree, I certainly think anyone who belive RVD currently lives up to the standards he set for the name RVD years ago would be overrating him. But his career, his prime, and legacy aren't overrated.

I don't think he's overrated at all. I think it's pretty well accepted by now (at least by TPWW folks) that RVD's a shell of the wrestler he used to be. I don't honestly know anybody who thinks RVD puts on as good a show now as he used to, and he damn sure wasn't overrated back in his hayday. I think he easily lived up to the hype in the good ol' days.

I agree RVD is overrated these days, but if you've seen his matches on 'from the vault' from back in 2002 lately, you'll see how good he used to be, it's amazing how much more of a 'solid' worker he was back then. Not sure if that's the right word but it's the best I can think of.

The One was absolutely right, but The Critic hit the nail on the head.

The thing, really, is not that he's overrated, but that he was once truly phenominal and, as with any legion, vertain fan cliques refuse to aknowledge the change. The shift from Phenominal to Above Average was started by the corporate "You're not the star" motto, I have no doubt. But, shit, after 5 or 6 years of "You're not the star," I can only imagine that one's apathy for anything more than a paycheck consumes the desire to portray the greatness you once employed.

I'm not saying he's lazy, I'm just saying his lack of motivation is apparently justifiable.

Is he overrated? Yes

Is he a spot monkey? No.

To me a spot monkey is someone that shows no psychology in a match and simply hits big move after big move. Because of Rob Van Dam we have spot monkeys such as A.J. "Faggot" Style, but Van Dam in all his watered down glory is still better than that. At least he sells injury. But yeah he sucks.

How can you even call this current one ECW? But besides that I think he is overrated currently because we have yet to see anything new from him. Back in the day with the real ECW all of his matches involved something new. Now he seems to be using the same things, personally I blame Vince for that but w/e.
But I think he can live up to his hype if he was allowed to. Maybe he should go to TNA..
