What is a 5-Star match to you?
All the talk of 5* matches made me think about this. How do you define a 5-star match?
Personally, I think 5-star match is match that can stand on its own and tell the whole story on its own. Great "pure wrestling" can make a good match, but it has to have a story and an emotional connectivity to it to be a "classic" or "great" match. That is why people watch wrestling. That emotional connection that gets you lost in this world known as professional wrestling. The only way to get that emotional connection is for both men in the match to "be on" and just tell a story. Terry Funk said on a DVD that wrestling is a dance...a beautiful dance. It flows and it just works and all the emotions are there. |

A 5 Star Match is something that is a totally solid match, were there is nothing let to be desired. It has to have the "bigger than just this match" feel of it, and it has to carry a lasting impression. It's basically a match where after it done, you feel proud of being a wrestling fan...for me anyway.

In fact. He had quite a few good heel promos. The one where he pushed Vince on his ass. The Shawn Michaels stuff. Gold.

You know, the matches don't even need to be technical classics to be 5 star...take for example Hogan v Warrior. Neither of them can wrestle a lick, but that was a 5 star match. The IWC gets so hung up on grappling abilities that they forget this is all predetermined and doesn't mean a thing if a guy can shoot wrestle anyone for a win but can't gain the audience's favor, or disdain.

Benoit is charismatic as fuck. He just doesn't have amazing mic skills. Mic skills are not the same thing as charisma.

You need charisma to have mic skills, but you don't need mic skills to have charisma. Its not a fucking hard concept.

This one'll really have you laughing, Rob...
James is right...For once. Though Benoit's not oozing charisma, mic skills or otherwise. He's not a robot like most tards say, but.... |

Mind you, people are getting their panties in a twist just because I said a world class performer like Chris Jericho isn't as good as Hart. |

Rob, let me tell you something about TPWW:
The majority of folks here are idiots. Unless you are blindly fellating Jericho is the best ever, they will spastically assume you hate Jericho or something similarly retarded. They do not understand that, just because you disagree does not mean that you think the complete opposite. I'm sure that I'm not telling you anything you don't already know though. Honestly, I jsut wanted to see the "rofl" Smiley.

A 5* match is something that concluded a storyline in a memorable and sensible fashion IMO.

Well let's examine the lesser talked-about star levels.
A one-star match is just a piece of crap. Moves are botched due to laziness or lack of skill, the booking makes no sense, the crowd doesn't care, they react badly, etc. You have to be making an effort to suck this bad. A two-star match is something that just falls on its face. The performers are likely phoning it in, with a go-out-and-just-do-my-job mentality, it doesn't hold interest, and it's generally forgettable. A three-star match is average. It will generally interest a mark or casual fan, but to someone who pays more attention, it's obvious that the people involved could have done better. A four-star match is what makes you sit up and take notice. The performers are giving an effort to have a good match, and while not necessarily flawless, it meets all expectations and exceeds a few. This is the sort of thing that is usually called a solid PPV match. A five-star match is basically the highest thing that the performers involved could ever be expected to be capable of. They pull out all of their best moves and combine them to form impactful, memorable spots, they get the audience into it. All expectations are exceeded, and at the end, you are left with the feeling that nothing could have been done better at that place and time. A five-star match is what happens when the best possible efforts from two or more excellent workers collide with excellent buildup and certain intangible, unpredictable, and unknowable qualities. |

I have different standards for a 5* match. I would consider Jerry Lynn vs RVD at Living Dangerously a 5* for me for the reversal fest and high spots. But at the same time, I would consider The Rock and Austin at WM 19 a 5* for sheer entertainment value.
No "one" thing defines a 5* match for me. On another note, Rob, I think we are all in agreement that Benoit's mic skills suck ass, but the IWC loves him for his ability, and the casual fans love him because he always puts on an exciting match and is entertaining to watch in the ring. Is that not having charisma? |
