Which trilogy has been this generations "trilogy"?
I don't mean a comparison to Star Wars, or neccesarily which is the better made film series technically. I mean culturally and popularity-wise, as well as how memorable and influential it has been. In terms of classic moments, characters, it's longevity, and it's popularity with all demographics. Which of these trilogies takes the cake as this generations saga?
I suppose box office gross, critical reception, and cultural impact are all factors but not criteria. |

It's really tough. I'm not a huge fan of any of those three but it seems like Spiderman rules all.

Spiderman appeals to more of the general masses as does Pirates. LOTR was popular, but I think a bigger portion of that fanbase is hardcore fans of the book etc.
I happen to like LOTR first, Pirates, then Spiderman, but it wouldn't kill me to have never seen the Spiderman movies. |

I think LotR will be looked back in a way we look at the original Star Wars trilogy. The appeal will survive the test of time.

Hmm...
I would have to put them in this order: LOTR Pirates Spiderman I dont care for the Spiderman Trilogy...2 was the only entertaining one IMO. One was ok, but was just blah for me. 2 was good. I could barely sit through 3 and most of the actors throughout the series annoyed me. |

Very easily LotR. Nerds have a hard time letting things die, it will out last most of the trilogies with out trying. It's only competiton is Star Wars. And it's freaking STAR WARS.

I think the Matrix had the oppurtunity to be our generations trilogy... it's a shame the sequels sucked though.

Very very tough.
I guess I'll put Lord of the Rings up top first. I guess it kinda appealed to us adults more than kids. Also, a great cast. Some put them on the map, others may or may not have faded away. Pete Jackson did a great job bring this book to the screen. Pirates (no, not the porn flick) will be in the middle. Johnny Depp gave us a character we'll never forget, and Disney got the guts to make a real "guy" movie instead of sticking to kids movies and cartoons. Keira Knightley was hot and Orlando Bloom gets another trilogy under his belt. You can always count on this to rake in the cash, if another one does come around. Web-Head is down on the bottom. Marvel's main man will keep the kids happy with the action. But sorta bummed out the die hard fans. The first one was pretty good, the second was great, the third rather disapointing. I guess Tobey Maguire played a good Peter Parker, Dunst a fair MaryJane Watson. Count on Marvel to keep cranking out great comic flicks in the future. Honorable mentions go to the X-Men trilogy, and The Matrix. |

Lord of The Rings.
Great story which they did not fuck up, stunning and captivating visuals, perfect casting choices. Great trilogy in general Pirates/Spiderman - Both great starts and progressivly worse. |

Spider-Man, within the definitions Jeritron gave. No Way Pirates or Lord of the Rings can compete.

I would like to say Pirates as they had more the Star Wars feel with movies and I enjoyed them alot more than the boring ass LotR movies, but LotR has had the SW attraction and nominations for the Oscars, so it wins.
I don't count superhero movies in the trilogy arguements, expecially since it doesn't seem they are finished up yet. |

well I put trilogy in quotation marks. Lotr will obv stay a trilogy, unless Hobbit is made in the same continuity (same cast). Which it very well might.
As for Pirates and Spidey, they will both be continued in some way or another. Either way both trilogies have been wrapped up and concluded in 3 movies, unless of course Raimi and Macguire return. They may, or they may get the Batman treatment and be recast, reimagined and after that flops, restarted down the road. As for Pirates, this trilogy is at an end. They will probably make a prequel or another sequel trilogy, but the only real staple would probably be Sparrow. It'd kinda be a new trilogy or chapter in itself, similar to Star Wars 1-3 or The Hobbit if it's made. |

Nothing touches Star Wars 4-6, and I personally hate when modern trilogies are compared. Rather, I was just asking which was similar in a broad sense I suppose. |

The one credit I will give Pirates in this debate, since it seems to be getting no love, is the fact that it has Disney in it's corner.
The Pirates films, especially the Jack Sparrow character, will stay alive and probably household names simply because they're part of the Disney family. From being part of a classic ride, theme parks, and the Disney legend it will stick around. I give the Pirates sequels a lot of shit, but I do recognize the first as a semi-classic in the making. It's certainly the greatest live action Disney film to date, and will remain a household name because of it's distributor and owner. |

Spiderman3 holds the opening weekend record over Dead Man's Chest, which comes in second, by a large margin. As for the other installments, the original Spiderman ranks third behind DMC, but ranks well above At World's End. Spiderman2 ranks further down the list, but ahead of the original pirates. So for every Pirates movies opening weekend totals, there's at least one Spiderman film that outranks it. Whereas Pirates only manages to outrank them once, and not for the ultimate lead. Spiderman holds the 1st and 3rd spots on the all-time list. Pirates holds the 2nd and 5th. And though the other 2 respective films are further down the list, Spidey has the win there too. So it's not really a contest in that aspect of box-office measurement either. Boxofficemojo.com is a great site |

Also, if you adjust the list for inflation, and it is judge sheerly by ticket sales, Spidey 1 even takes down DMC.
Of course, inflation is a huge part of any box-office argument. When you look at the list of inflation, Spiderman 3 and Dead Man's Chest which appear to be all-time powerhouses, failed to sell as many tickets as films like Ghostbusters and the original Batman among many others For example, all time domestic gross, Pirates of the Caribbean ranks like 4th or 5th all time or something like that. But if you adjust inflation and measure it by asses in seats, it's something like 44th all time. Not too impressive. |

Ruling out any of these series because they're not really a trilogy is stupid.
LotR will have a fourth movie, intended as art of the same series. Not a trilogy. The odds that Spidey or Pirates will remain three movies are about the same as me walking on water. So... They're all trilogies, or they're none of them trilogies. I don't think any of these count as the best, but really. Pirates and Spider-Man both blow away Lord of the Rings in terms of fan acceptance and response, which is what makes something a cultural phenomenon, a classic, etc. I'm not shitting on LotR, but still. |
