Exclamation Best sporting events you've attended

Four immediately come to mind for me:

1. Boston Red Sox 2 - 5 Minnesota Twins
Major League Baseball
Tuesday, June 13, 2006
The Metrodome, Minneapolis
- A series against the Red Sox is always big news, then insert Johan Santana and Curt Schilling into the series opener. They both pitch awesome, Santana strikes out the first five batters and 13 total, giving up one run in 8 innings. The game is tied 1-1 after nine. Boston scores a run in the top of the 12th, putting the Red Sox up 2-1. Then, in the bottom of the 12th, Jason Kubel hits a walk off grand slam to win the game 5-3. Added to the energy, Kevin Garnett was front row behind the Twins dugout, doing the "I'm not worthy" sign to Torii as he ran in after ending an inning with a great catch. Overall just electric atmosphere and the start to the Twins amazing run that ended in making up 11 games on Detroit at the break to win the AL Central.

2. Fulham 0 - 4 Tottenham Hotspur
FA Cup Fourth Round
Sunday 18 February 2007
Craven Cottage, London
- My first Premiership game couldn't have been more memorable. I was getting Subway at the end of the street when I saw two friends who said they were going to go to Putney Bridge and get scalped tickets. I was in. We got there and bartered some guy down from £50 each to £20. None of us were Spurs fans, but our seats were right in the heart of the visiting stands. I remember walking through that long park to get to the stadium and hearing the Spurs fans going crazy. Inside was no different. At the time, both teams were playing poorly in the league but still had hopes in the FA Cup, so the atmosphere inside was electric. We couldn't understand the words of most the songs, but we sang along and yelled in bad British accents the whole time. The songs were awesome, "Spurs are on their way to Wembley," "What's that coming over the hill, is it Chimbonda?," "We now have a team of Robbie Keanes" etc. Keane scored two awesome goals, and Berbatov came in and scored the last two (right as he was starting to get real hot). The last three goals were scored on our side too, so it was crazy. I went to three or four games after that, but nothing compared to the atmosphere and I have never been to a sporting event with singing like that. It was absolutely incredible.

3. Kansas 68 - 72 Missouri
NCAA College Basketball
Sunday March 6, 2005
Mizzou Arena, Columbia, Mo.
- I knew the Missouri-Kansas Border War was one of the oldest and fiercest rivalries in college sports, but that was about all. I didn't know much about the schools or rivalry before my freshman year, but I quickly learned. Kansas was looked at as potential NCAA Championship contender, with Wayne Simien, Aaron Miles, Keith Langford and J.R. Giddens. Mizzou was coming off it's most disappointing season (was ranked No. 3 early in the season, missed NCAA Tournament) and was sitting just above .500 as the season finale against Kansas approached. Some friends and I camped out at Mizzou Arena, which had just opened this year, and we were first in line for the game. By the time doors opened the line to get into the stadium was well into the hundreds, maybe even thousands. We got in two hours before tipoff, but you could tell this was different. Some other games had good attendance, but today was the only time that every single seat was filled, and it finally felt like a great college basketball arena. The game was incredible, real close all the way and Mizzou usually holding the slight lead. With about a minute left, you could tell Mizzou was going to win, and people were on edge ready to rush the court. The final buzzer rang, Mizzou had defeated their fiercest rivals for the first time in a couple years and the whole student section was on the court. My voice was shot for a while after that.
The year after was supposed to be even better, but I was in Europe and didn't get home in time for the game. I think Mizzou was down something like 12 points with 2 minutes to go and Thomas Gardner just went lights out. Mizzou tied it up, Cristian Moody missed TWO free throws that could have won the game with time expired and Mizzou won in overtime. Damn.

Other noteworthy games:
In 2004 I believe, the Vikings started 5-0 with the Broncos coming to town. At the end of the first half, Culpepper throws a bomb to Moss, who of course catches it, but is about 10 feet from the end zone. He tosses the ball over his shoulder to Mo Williams and Williams runs into the end zone for a score. Incredible.

Mizzou football homecoming in 2005 was amazing. The game itself didn't have much significance, Mizzou was clearly going to a medeocre bowl and Iowa State wasn't very good, but Iowa State was winning late. Mizzou senior quarterback Brad Smith was a hero in Columbia, but he was taken out in the fourth and true freshman Chase Daniel came in. With five minutes left in the game, print media is allowed to go down to field level, so we did. So I was standing just outside Mizzou's endzone and Daniel lead the game-tying drive. His pass to Sean Coffey was caught at the corner of the endzone, about 10 feet from me, and you could totally see his feet just barely getting in bounds. Mizzou went into overtime and won on a field goal. Pretty awesome ending.

The 2005 Independence Bowl was amazing too. Steve Spurrier in his first year back lead South Carolina to three straight touchdowns in the first quarter. At 21-0, I could see the Atlanta reporter in front of me writing her lead about how great Spurrier was. Then, Mizzou safety (forget the name) intercepted in the end zone and ran 100 yards back for the score, and Mizzou ended up winning in an incredible last three quarters. I would have been so pissed if I went to Shreveport, La., to see a blowout.

Ummm... haven't really been to too many. A bunch of Montana Grizzlies games, I went to a Rams-Hawks game in St.Louis bout 3-4 years ago, Rams won a great game, I had shitty seats though. And I went to a Dodger game, and Derrek Lee kicked our asses that game.

Leicester City 2, Crystal Palace 1 (aet), Wembley Stadium, 27th May 1996
At the end of my first season as a Leicester City fan, a miraculous run of results under our new manager, Martin O'Neill saw Leicester sneak into the playoffs, a 0-0 draw with Stoke and a 1-0 win in the second leg saw us facing Crystal Palace in the final and my first trip to the Twin Towers. Andy Roberts put Crystal Palace ahead after 13 minutes, the ball taking an unlucky bobble over Kevin Poole's arm. In the 77th minute, Leicester won a penalty, Garry Parker scoring it, having been the hero at Stoke in the semi final. In extra time, the two sides were knackered, battling it out but unable to get ahead. A Penalty shoot out seemed certain. Cometh the hour, cometh the man, the most unlikely Wembley hero of all time... 119th minute, reserve goalkeeper Zeljko Kalac comes on for Poole. We'd seen Kalac in action twice this season, once he nearly cost us a 3-0 win at West Brom which we won 3-2, and a disasterous League Cup match against Bolton. He's terrible, anyone that saw Australia v Croatia at last year's World Cup knows that. However, it seemed to somehow unnerve the Crystal Palace defence, who let Garry Parker's free kick find an exhausted Steve Claridge, who managed to lift his leg up to make shin contact with the ball, to put it past Nigel Martyn, who was rooted to the spot. Leicester win 2-1 and are on their way to the Premiership, and arguably the greatest spell in club history.

Ireland beating Holland when McAteer scored for a 1-0 win is up there. Best footie game I've been to anyway. Terms of best games well you'll just not beat the atmosphere of a full Croke Park for the GAA.

Super Bowl XXXIX New England Patriots vs Philadelphia Eagles

Pats won 24-21, didn't come down to a last second field goal but was still pretty bomb. Not too many people can say they went to a Superbowl, never mind to a Superbowl which their favorite team was particpating in/won. It was also cool since my aunt came alone and she went to Superbowl XX when the Bears destoried the Patriots, so at least now she got to see them actually win in person.

I also saw the Red Sox play the Cubs at Wrigley Field 2 summers ago, even though they lost that was pretty sweet.

Monday Night Miracle @ Meadowlands

Jets down 30-7 after 3rd quarter. Me and my pops almost left, but we figured so many people were leaving the parking lot would be less crowded if we waited a lil' longer.

Jets came back to win 40-37 in OT

Alao SuperbowlXLI was pretty "sick". Wouldn't call it 2sicc though, pretty bad game + it was raining and I had a sinus infection and got pink eye the next day. But Hester's return was pretty amazing

I believe it was game 2 (maybe game 3) in 1994. Vancouver vs Toronto. Bure and Ronning scored goals. I seem to think it was 2-0 but I could be wrong. I was only 10 years old.

I was pissed when that happened, not because I have something against UGA or anything but the fact that big time conference members refered to that game a lot when small conference members where looking for equal rights in the BCS

UGA definitely just had a good game against them. I agree that basing their whole argument on that one game is just plain stupid.

not in any order...

game 4 2004 ALCS sox first win on their way to the World Series. made national TV and newspapers sitting in row 2 by the yanks dugout with a paper bag over my head... the camera cut away when I started drinking a beer through the mouthole in the bag. My phone rang it was a friend of mine "hey, are you wearing a Ted Bruschi jersy and wearing a bag over your head" yes "ok, just to make sure, were you drinking a beer a min ago" yes... "ok, just to let you know you were on TV".

Patriots first monday night football game in over 10yrs at Foxboro, Parcells was coach, the place was nuts...

multiple Celtics playoff games over the years.

Sox vs. Oakland ALDS I think it was 2003, when they beat Oakland to keep it alive... it was the game that guy from Oakland missed the plate and rather then going for the plate tried to shove Tek out of the way.

Celtics vs. Bulls, Jordans first game back... bledsoe sitting next to me, bill murry shaking hands with people and tripping and falling on me...

best sports related non-game - Larry Bird retirment knight.

best funny game memories...

sox vs. baltimore... sitting 1st row next to the baltimore dugout... BJ surhoff walking back from the outfield. me-
"excuse me, mr. surhoff" (he looks) "how are you enjoying retirement?" him - "How about you come on this field and kick my ass and I'll retire" I lmfao... I thought it was a great response... the people around me were pissed, I became a surhoff fan! apperently next inning I was in the bathroom and on his was out he was glaring over where I was.

Artest 1st game as a King in Boston... my friend wearing a 20yr old kings jersey and me and him cheering for Artest... when someone asked "how can you cheer for the Kings" we said "we're not, we're just cheering for Artest" I don't think that made much more sense to them...

Newcastle 3-2 Barcelona FC

Tino Asprilla "leaping like a salmon" to score a hatrick and leading 3-0 at half time against one of the best teams in the world.

Newcastle 5-0 Manchester United

Beating United 5-0 with Albert chipping Schmeichel just put the icing on the cake.

Newcastle 4-3 Leiecester

Alan Shearer scoring a hatrick in the last 20 minutes or something to beat Leicester.

Yeah pretty much only been to big football games. Saw the Lakers once but it was a blowout against the Vancouver Grizzlies from row ZZZ or something. Still cool though.

Redskins vs Giants...somewhile ago. Even though I liked neither team the game was still fun. And at the end of the game the announcer said " AND REMEMBER HAIL TO THE REDSKINS!!" Some random guy shouted. "MAN FUCK THE REDSKINS THEY LOST"

Fresno St. vs. TCU at Bulldog Stadium in Fresno. I don't remember what year it was, but TCU was undefeated and LT was a Heisman Candidate and had ran for over 200 yards in almost every game that season. He ran for about 43 yards that game and Fresno won in like, the third overtime. And that Fresno State team wasn't even particularly good that year.

Fresno St. vs. UTEP basketball game @ Selland Arena in Fresno. It was exciting if you like massive blowouts. I think Fresno St. won by like 90 points. That year we thought we were going to win the national title. The team fell apart at the end of they year and promptly exited the NCAA tourney in the 2nd round.

FA Trophy Final 2007 - first competitive game at the new Wembley. We lost, but we scored the first competitive goal and it was an amazing occasion.

Shame about the stadium. £790 million my arse.

That's pretty sweet...I would have loved to been at the game a few years ago when Reggie Bush gained like 500 yards of offense by himself against Fresno

Yeh I actually had tickets to go to it but I was living in North Carolina at the time and couldn't afford the plane ticket to get there. So I mailed them to a friend back in CA. I dunno though, I probably would've been sick in the long run, after the game that destroyed Fresno State's football program, lol.
