Baseball question...
Ok if a batter swings at a wild pitch in the dirt and it's strike 3 he can run to first base and if he makes it he would be safe right? Is that called a passed ball and has anyone ever been safe on a play like that?

Yeah he'd be safe. I saw it happen like a month ago, Matt Kemp of the Dodgers struck out on a wild pitch, and made it safe to first.

Correct.

It still goes down as a Strikeout, but the team is not charged an out. This counts for any 3rd strike in which the pitch is not caught. That is why you will see the catcher tag out the hitter on alot of balls in the dirt. Not often to they make first, but it happens a few times a year.

Yeah. If it bounces he can go

'cept if there's a runner on first he's automatically out. Though he'll usually run anyway just to fool the fielding team.

'cept if there's 2 out. Then it doesn't matter if there's a runner on first, he can run anyway.

When you get down to certain situations, there are some really crazy/complicated rules in baseball. One of the few sports where every play is just one of many possible circumstances, so you can literally have a rules in place for every single possibility.

It's generally just called a "dropped third strike"

A passed ball is any pitch that gets past the catcher that he should have caught

A wild pitch is pretty much the same thing, except the scorers consider the pitch to be so bad the catcher couldn't have caught it. and the error gets charged to the pitcher, not the catcher

i could be wrong, but I don't think (as wee pointed out) it's called a wild pitch or passed ball because it's scored strike out and a passed ball or wild pitch is an error which would take away the strike out...

Also, if there's a runner on 1st I thought they could advance, since you're allowed to steal on a strike out, I don't see the difference?

here's a question I have no clue about..

drop 3rd strike, the runner gets to 1st and is safe, next batter hits a home run... is it 1ER or 2ER? since it was a S.O. and dropped 3rd strike... I don't see it being a earned run, but I could be wrong..

You mean like, as I pointed out in the first line of my post?

The runners already on base can advance, and generally do as they normally would on a passed ball. The hitter, however, is out.

Though a smart hitter will still run up to first anyway to try and fool the fielding team into thinking he isn't out, taking their attention away from the other runners.

The earned run rule is funny, and I don't fully understand it. Because it changes in different situations

Like say a runner on first reaches second on a passed ball. If the hitter singles and he scores, it's an unearned run. But if he hits a homerun or walks, it becomes an earned run again.

Pretty sure runners that reach first on an error or dropped third strike are always unearned though.

I'm pretty sure, if you have the ball you can "block" any base.

If you don't have the ball and block home plate (or any base) they can award the plate or base to the runner.

thats because if he was on first and the hitter after him singles, he typically would not be able to score, he would be able to go to 2nd or 3rd at the most. if the hitter after that singles as well, it is assumed that the runner who advanced on the previous hit (to 2nd or 3rd) would have scored anyway so the run is attributed to the pitcher who put him on.
