Survivor Series 98: Deadly Game

Just downloaded this on PW Torrents. It was one of the best PPV's of the late 90s. Screwjobs all around. I was one of the millions, and millions, of the Rock's fans that was shocked to learn he was with Vince all along. When Shane came out and didn't count Austin and flipped him off that was classic.

Great classic PPV.

meh it's not classic. Solid story telling with mediocre to subpar wrestling.

One of my favorites. I remember being such a mark and telling my friends at school the next day that if only Ken Shamrock would've caught Big Bossman's nightstick that McMahon's whole plan would've failed.

Don't remember it. Pretty sure I was a hardcore WCW mark around that time and refused to watch WWF for the most part. The only times I would even tune into to WWF programming is when SCSA, TEH ROK, or Foley were on. Then I'd flip over for 30 seconds to see what they did before going back to WCW.\

Ah the Monday Night Wars and how I miss them

I totally agree. Great PPV. In fact, for me personally, every PPV between Survivor Series 1998 and Wrestlemania XV was awesome. PPV's between 99 and 2000 were then hot and cold (more hot than cold) but there have only been a handful of mark out PPV moments since then.

These are my personal opinions.

Yeah, one of the best PPV's I can remember. The format helped that. The various main-event level storylines (remember, the ones that can go on WITHOUT a title involved) going on all coming together.

You don't get shocks like that these days.

This thread makes me think that after Summerslam, they should end the brand split (but keep ECW) and have SS: Deadly Games II for the Undisputed WWE Title (I hated it when they called it the WWE Undisputed Championship - sounded fucking stupid).

Have Cena/Khali as the top seeds with byes to the quarter finals and make all the others have matches for qualifying. On the final Raw, Chris Jericho can make his return and be a special guest participant in qualifying, beating Shelton Benjamin.

At the finals, Jericho beats Khali in the quarters and goes on to win the thing gaining his revenge over Cena in the final and turning heel in the process. That way he can say that he's the only man to establish the UD title....twice. And he can be the arrogrant prick he was with the two belts before. No-one else made it look as good, thats why they changed it to one not long after Mania.

MARK OUT

I don't really like that PPV all too much. Pretty shitty, and it was the first to go against Survivor Series tradition which stuck around for too long.

Best 1998 PPV = King of the Ring

I just remember that a bunch of people held up that giant ass sign that had the entire New Age Outlaw "Ladies and gentlemen..." speech on it.

And I remember freaking the fuck out over Shane flipping off Austin. Good storytelling PPV, but very lackluster as far as match quality goes.

As said before, it was a mediocre event as far as wrestling went, but at the time, the storylines during the show were fucking brilliant. Rock's heel turn, Shane's heel turn, and Vince McMahon re-enacting the events of one year before with HBK/Hart, this time with Rock/Mankind. That was classic storytelling.

I watched this PPV as a mark and was rooting for Mankind to get his first WWF title win. Had my doubts if Vince was really on his side but they were gone after Shane screwed Austin in the semi final match. With all the McMahon's on Foley's side going into the final, it looked like he would win the final until Vince then sided with the Rock.

Some of the best storytelling ever by WWE and the Shane screwjob was played off so well it was completely unexpected.

One of the FUNNIEST matches for me

One of the FUNNIEST matches for me

Shortly before Survivor Series 98', I remember one particular match.

Undertaker/Kane vs. The Rock/Ken Shamrock/Mankind.

I still get a kick when I think of that match. At the time, I just found it hilarious how Rocky, Shamrock, and Mankind were all beating the snot out of each other while Kane and Taker just sat there kinda like.....WTF?

Good times.
