ROH/Project 161 Discussion

There was some talk going on about this in the Official ROH Discussion Thread, but I decided to make a new one, as I think this deserves some attention. I just learned about this today, and I've been doing some research on it, and it's got me really interested.

Now, I'm going to do my best to explain the situation, but someone might be able to do a better job than me. But here goes:

I think it all started at a ROH event, where there were flyers going about, with the following message written on it:

Nothing Saves
A WORLD Without HONOR Will
Suffer

The flyers also gave a website: http://www.abusedsociety.com. It should be noted that this site is now down, and takes you to something associated with GoDaddy, but apparently it used to have a photoshopped picture of the Statue of Liberty in Chicago, with tears running out of its eye in blood.

The name "Project 161" sprang up, and many believe this refers to ROH's 161st show, which will be their third PPV tapings in Chicago. It was also the address of a website given (http://www.project161.com/).

There were a bunch of people who joined the ROH Forums, and two of the most notable are "Project161" and "Honor161." Project161 was the original, and perhaps where the "Project 161" label came from. They started posting a bunch of cryptic information, as did Honor161, however Project called Honor a fraud. Anyway, even though threats were made by moderators and what not "official" cryptic warnings from these two were allowed to remain on the website for some time, while others were deleted.

But back to the http://www.project161.com/ website, for a second. A query was done into who was operating the site, and it came up with a friend of Gabe Sapolsky. This lead to Gabe getting brought into an angle, with distorted images of him and his wife being posted around the place, with messages like "No one is safe."

Gabe then got on the ROH Message Boards, and posted this:

Ok, all this crap ends now. I'm sorry if it seems like I'm in a bad mood because I am. I am trying my best to keep my composure. I just had a long day/night of production on the Japan DVDs. I sign on here, I'm actually feeling pretty good about things because I just watched a lot of great wrestling from our Japan shows. So what do I find:

1) A private email I send to someone requesting that photos and information about my family be taken off a website is now made public. This is my family, not an angle. Understand that. When I send you an email it is private. When I make a request about my family it is real. Lets get that straight right now.

2) The clowns who are attempting to f*** with my life and ROH, which is my life, spam this board again after it takes me two hours the other night to clean it up. Not only that, but other people decide to jump in. I am about to start banning people like crazy so I suggest everyone read the rules and stick to them quickly. My patience is running out. Again, I am trying to keep my composure here, but I have had enough. I now have to go clean up the board again after a long day of production. I suggest if you are in doubt about something you posted that you delete it to yourself. I will ban anyone involved with any posts that are in doubt of breaking any rules. This is a warning. If this doesn't apply to you and you are a productive member of this board I apologize and please ignore this rant.

3) Now we have more people than ever checking this board and it is a disgrace to the company. I want everyone to know that police have been alerted and I will do whatever I can to stop these websites and harrassment both to me personally and my wife. This is your warning. Stop it now.

That is all for now. I'm not playing a sick game here. It is over and I need to go back to doing what deserves my attention and that's making ROH and FIP as good as possible for you.

If this doesn't apply to you sorry for the rant. If it does then take this warning seriously.

The debate is whether or not Gabe is just playing his part for the angle, or whether or not he is actually serious and putting his foot down about the discussions that were going on about it.

A lot of people believe this is an "Alternate Reality Game." I'm not too familiar with these, but apparently it's a form of interactive narrative, which can use multiple media forms, which uses real life as a platform for its story. It is being used more and more in advertising, as apparently Halo 2 used a few ARG ideas, as have movies like Aqua Teen Hunger Force. I think the whole Cloverfield thing could be considered an ARG, somewhat. It has that website with videos that many believe are connected to the film, and it is basically running off what people can find (or think they find) on it.

I guess some people might believe this is just people actually giving Gabe a hard time, but I'm not subscribing to that theory. For one, he could have just made an official note that "Project 161" was not to be discussed, through one of his moderators. That he is playing into it, and biting the emotional line, makes me think this is all an angle.

The common thread of the "Project161" and "Honor161" posts are that they talk about "the abused," and how they will rise and kill honor. They also name stables like the No Remorse Corps and Prophecy by name, supporting belief this is an angle, and not an actual case of stalker fascination with Gabe.

If this does turn out to be an angle (as I suspect it is), the general consensus seems to be that it will be a stable that comes in and poses war against ROH. It seems like this happens a lot, with The Prophecy and CZW already doing that, but they were great storylines and worked wonders for ROH. A few names have been thrown out there about who the "abused" are, and a lot seem to think that Adam Pearce and BJ Whitmer will be among them. Many have also linked this to the release of Jimmy Rave, who many think could return as a part of the stable. There is also talk about the leader being someone called "Gabriel." Whether this is a metaphor, or the name of the character leading them, I have no clue. It's also very similar to "Gabe," so it could be used as an alias for that reason.

I won't go too far into speculation, as it is one of those things that could turn out many ways, but if this is an angle, my hat's off to ROH, because it is 100x more interesting than anything going on in the WWE. What are your thoughts on the whole situation? Is it a work? Will it be pay off?

project161.com also has the August 10 & 11th shows on there if you rollover. So something presumably will start there.

That's true. I think we'll definitely seem some kind of development, with it being finally revealed as a storyline, or at least some further intricacy to the ARG.

As I mentioned in the ROH thread, any angle that can make some smarks question whether or not it's real, is a damn good angle.

That's kind of the whole point of an ARG, though. To build anticipation with hints and developments. The flyers, forums and websites could be classified as "something," anyway. There is yet to be a development of an ROH show, but I think that is why they are advertising the Death Before Dishonor series. Something will likely go down there.

That is the leading candidate, I think. I must say, after reading the blog, I agree that it does seem very fitting. Maybe too fitting, though, if you get what I mean?

I'm beginning to accept Pearce and Whitmer as something more credible now. I originally wasn't too big on the idea, but I think I am slowly coming to grips with it. I think it would be so much better if Jimmy Rave joined them, as well. Of course, that would mean his firing would be a work, but if it turns out that way, I'll be a happy camper.

I wouldn't mind it if they brought in Azrieal and Deranged to work underneath them, either. They seem to fit the "Abused Society" theme. Azrieal, in particular, was climbing the ROH roster fairly steadily, until they suddenly stopped using him. The last time we saw these two was on the first ROH PPV, where Kevin Steen & El Generico beat them around for a little bit.

Jimmy Rave, Adam Pearce, BJ Whitmer, Shane Hagadorn, Azrieal and Deranged? Still looks a little watery, but I think it can pass.

Maybe. I haven't seen too much of his ring work. In storylines, he is still attached to Adam Pearce as his "assistant," or something. I've read he's got potential, and he is still fairly new in the business. I guess there's a good chance that one day, he may not blow.

He's getting better. And I love his corner counter against a running opponent.

( He gets a foot on the guys shoulder, so he's sort of laying on the top rope and the opponent, smirks, and then uses his free foot to kick the guy in the face.
)

I must confess, while tossing ideas out in my head, I did get the horrid thought that ROH had caught "shitty attempt at publicity fever" and worked something out with Rob Feinstein and Dan Maff returning. Maff used to team with BJ Whitmer, so that can be used to tie-in Adam Pearce, Whitmer and Shane Hagadorn.

That's the kind of thinking the WWE and TNA have conditioned me to.

The popular belief is that the "two kids" are actually the Briscoes.
