The Missing Link passes away

Dewey Robertson passed away at 3:30am on August 16th, 2007. He has lost his battle to cancer. His son Jason was at his side when he passed. We can all take comfort in knowing that his pain is over, he's home with the Lord and he finished strong.

His son will be making the funeral arrangements. Dewey will be laid to rest in his home, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Please keep his family in prayer.

Dewey was most famous as the Missing Link. Real name: Byron James John Robertson
Dewey was 68 years old.

Many of his friends are shocked, as he looked so healthy at the recent Hall of Fame get together.

The Slam column on Dewey
CANOE -- SLAM! Sports - Wrestling - Cancer claims Dewey "Missing Link" Robertson

We would like to extend our condolences to Dewey's family, friends and fans at this time.

I've never heard of this guy, but I have lost family to cancer. It's such a heart breaking pain in the ass. My best wishes to his friends and family.

Rest in peace.

WoW.

What a career he had.

He definitely had some VERY hard times in his life, with the steroid and drug abuse, and alcohol use. Took a terrible toll on him physically and mentally & cost him a lot. He should have been a poster child for those during following generations to learn from, and avoid that type of behavior / bad choices.

In the ring, he had a tremendous career.

I had the pleasure of meeting him back in January of '05 in Tampa at the big WrestleReunion show he was at. Great guy, and as LC said, great character. Really big loss for the business, and a painful one after seeing how he turned his life around and tried to inspire others to do so.

R.I.P. The Link

ALSO: TO ANYONE WHO HAS NOT READ OR HEARD OF LINK'S BOOK, "BANG YOUR HEAD" - PICK IT UP. IT'S A GREAT READ WITH LOTS OF INSIGHT INTO MANY ASPECTS OF HIS LIFE, AND PRO-WRESTLING. GREAT STORIES.

Always sad to hear of death, but the man lived at least a respectable number of years and due to it being from cancer I'm sure he had proper time to inform loved ones so this shouldn't come as a total shock. Not saying the tragedy is lessened, just stating that hopefully this won't ruin too many people's day.

ALSO, just to add more about Missing Link - for those who don't know:

Dewey Robertson, best known to younger wrestling fans as "The Missing Link" passed away today at the age of 68.

Robertson started wrestling in his native Canada in the 1960s under the name of Dewey Robertson. He was a very popular wrestler in the Toronto area. He left to wrestle in the United States in 1973, but returned a year later as The Masked Crusader with manager John St. John. He was on a crusade to keep wrestling scientific but was soon unmasked by The Sheik. After that, Robertson formed a tag team called "The Crusaders" with Billy Red Lyons.

He owned a gym in the 1970s and had a television spot where he tore up a phone book to promote his gym.

In 1979, Robertson wrestled in the NWA's Jim Crockett Promotions with "Nature Boy" Buddy Rogers as his manager. He used Rogers' figure-four leg lock as his finisher.

He changed his look and became The Missing Link in 1983 in Mid-South Wrestling and started acting crazy. He got over and was signed by the World Wrestling Federation in 1985. He was managed by both Jimmy Hart and Bobby Heenan and often was stopped from doing a flying headbutt on a chair by Heenan after a match. Sports Illustrated even did an article on him.

He left the WWE for World Class Championship Wrestling in 1986 as a member of Devastation Incorporated. WCCW, seeing the audience cheering for the gimmick, turned him fan favorite and Sunshine became his handler. In late 1986, he left for the Universal Wrestling Federation where he was managed by Dark Journey.

He retired in the 1990s but came back to do independent shows as The Missing Link starting in 2004.

Robertson died in a hospital in Hamilton, Ontario on August 16, 2007 after a long battle with cancer. He was 68 years old.

PWBTS sends its condolences to the family and friends of Dewey Robertson
