Favorite Stand Up Comedians
I created this list based only on people I have seen perform enough I feel I could rate them well enough. By perform I mean, them talking freely, simply telling a joke (like on The Aristocrats), doing actual Stand Up Comedy or at roasts. It was easily hardest list I have made to date, as it is a challenge to put some of these above others. It shall be noted I consider Andy Kaufman an entertainer, which is why he didn’t make the list.
Top 20 Stand Up Comics: 1. Gilbert Gottfried: Gilbert is one of the funniest comics I have ever seen. He can literally do nothing and I’ll laugh. From his HBO special, to his Dirty Jokes DVD, to me seeing him doing stand up I have always been entertained. I love his style for roasting, and most importantly he is a master of the Aristocrats joke. I liked him so much I watched Cyber Chase, a kid show on PBS for about 3 months because he did voice acting on it. One of the highlights of my life was being in the front row seeing him perform. 2. Bill Cosby: Legend. Someone I really need to go see perform soon before he calls it quits. The fact that just a few years ago he was doing 2 and a half hour shows with no intermission is simply amazing. His “Himself” act is great, but my personal favorite is “To Russell My Brother, With Whom I Slept With.” If nobody has seen/heard either of those I recommend you check them out. He went on to produce one of my favorite shows “The Cosby Show” and seems like he is just an awesome person all around. 3. Chris Rock: While his movies aren’t that great, his stand up comedy is some of the best around. Being insightful and hilarious at the same time. He has had numerous specials all of which have been hilarious. How much do I like this man? Well, I once was asked to go to a party with a girl I was digging. I declined the invitation telling her I was going to stay home and watch Chris Rock’s new stand up special. While things would obviously not work out, it was certainly well worth it. 4. Jerry Seinfeld: Jerry Seinfeld is one of the reasons observational humor is so prominent in comedy. While it has become old, he perfected it and will always make it hilarious. His “Live On Broadway” set included all his great jokes and will have you laughing the entire time. Sadly (or not), he retired all those jokes that night and started fresh. One can witness his struggle to make a comeback with new material in “Comedian” which is hilarious and insightful. 5. Louis C.K.: A comic who has becoming more popular in recent years and is well deserving of the fame. While he isn’t a legend in comedy yet like most of the top 10 he is a personal favorite of mine. His “Shameless” set is in my top 5 albums of all time, and deservingly so. His style is unique, and his comedy style is hilarious. While some fault him for being the man behind Pootie Tang, I personally loved that movie so fuck off. 6. Eddie Murphy: Some say the greatest debate is whether there is a god or not? I disagree; the greatest debate is which is funnier, “Raw” or “Delirious” (aka Comedian). I will never be able to decide it would be like picking which ball is my personal favorite; they both get the job done so how could I pick? He clearly needs to stop making family movies that don’t involve Jeff Garlin and do more stand up. 7. Richard Pryor: Pryor did a lot for comedy, so it was a good thing he was fucking hilarious. While I can’t think of a personal set he did that rocked my socks off, overall all the stand up I have seen from him has been awesome. 8. Steven Wright: If you enjoy Mitch Hedberg or Demetri Martin, you will no doubt like this man? Why, you ask? Well, both of their styles were heavily influenced by Steven Wright. However, neither Mitch nor Demettri have an Oscar, so I guess that just proves Steven is better. One of the first comedians to break out of the Boston scene, he first got his big break on Carson, and ever since then become huge. In fact, I believe he got called over by Carson on his first set, which just shows how great he is. 9. Redd Foxx: A comedian who doesn’t get nearly enough recognition. Most famous for playing Fred Sanford in one of the best shows of all time, Sanford and Son. His comedy is down right vulgar at times and offensive. But those two combinations make him all the more funny. His stuff is somewhat hard to find, but it is out there if you can find it. 10. David Cross: David Cross has always managed to keep it real with his fuck it attitude. He has many great CDs out there and has starred in some great TV shows (Mr. Show w/ Bob & David, Arrested Development). 11. Jim Norton: If you never listened to “Yellow Discipline” then you probably never heard about it. Probably my favorite album of all time, if not it certainly ranks highly. This one album alone puts him high on my list. He also was hilarious on Tough Crowd and Lucky Louie. 12. Abbott & Costello: Creators of possible the best joke ever and one of the more famous jokes too. I have listened too many of their old radio shows and love their movies. Their style is great and makes you want to see more comedy teams these days. 13. Lenny Bruce: All those vulgar comics you see on stage our thanking this man. Before there was a time that you couldn’t say Fuck in public, this man basically ruined his career and life to make sure that changed. A true believer in the first amendment and a brilliant man. His comedy is somewhat poetic in nature, and you just get lost in what he says. 14. Garry Shandling: What is my ringtone on my phone? The theme to “It’s Garry Shandling Show” While I have never seen this show, I use it out of love to the sexiest comedian of all time. Behind the greatest show of all time “The Larry Sanders Show” he was able to make me tap into so many emotions. Once I was hooked on the show I began to explore more of his stuff, what do I find out. He wrote for “Sanford and Son.” He is a man you have to learn to love, and once you do you will be telling anyone who will listen about him. He is a man with integrity, as he turned down The Tonight Show to produce The Larry Sanders Show. He was the permanent guest host for Carson for awhile and has hosted many award shows. His jokes are always clever, and he is always ahead of the game. Watching him in “Ricky Gervais Meets Garry Shandling” you can just tell he is a comedic genius. My only complaint about him is his first name has two r’s. 15. Bernie Mac: Star of The Bernie Mac Show and part of “The Original Kings of Comedy” this Chicago comedian is downright hilarious. Sadly, he has done some shitty movies like numerous other comedians, but he still is a legend in comedy history. 16. Dave Chappelle: For a long time “Kill Em Softly” was one of my favorite stand up acts. I loved him well before his show, and loved him more after his show. His second stand up special on Showtime was not nearly as good as “Kill Em Softly” but was still better then some of the crap I see on TV these days. 17. Sindbad: If you find yourself saying, “Sinbad, really? SINDBAD?” Then I say to you “FUCK YOU!” I can’t tell you the amount of times I have seen his stand up specials on Comedy Central. He is one of the reasons I am so into comedy these days. I would love to see Comedy Central air his specials again as they were always a riot. It is a shame he isn’t around much and the only time he gets in the news is when people say he died. 18. Ricky Gervais: While not known for being a stand up comedian he gave it a try with his three specials Animals, Politics and Fame. While I have only seen the first two, they had me going crazy. Creator of “The Office” and “Extras,” I fell in love with him quickly. His radio shows/podcasts with Stephen Merchant (other man behind Extras/Office) and Karl Pilkington are some of my favorite things to listen to. But some of my favorite things to watch of his are his stand up acts. 19. Sarah Silverman: Her style is so unique, you simply have to appreciate her. In her stand up act she is able to get away with being so offensive by somehow not being offensive with her character. Check out her “Jesus is Magic” special to enjoy her. She is the second sexiest comedian of all time, right behind Garry Shandling’s (big?) ass. 20. Tie between Pat Cooper, Richard Lewis, Colin Quinn and Judy Gold: This is more of a special reference number 20 than anything. Pat Cooper is one of my favorite roasters, I love to hear him just talk freely. His act is hilarious, but not as good as his roasting skills. Richard Lewis reminds me of me, so I always loved him. He fears everything and is the man behind the phrase “_____ from hell.” Colin Quinn is somehow one of my favorites. While I haven’t seen all that much of his stand up besides from roasts, “Comedian” (the movie), and Tough Crowd he has always made me laugh. His delivery is terrible, but that just makes it all the more funny…stupid. Judy Gold, I really haven’t seen much of her at all. However whenever I do see her she steals the show/scene or whatever. Discuss your opinions, who you think deserves to be on list etc. Could have easily forgotten someone. Did this as a blog and that to educate some people who don't know much about comedy. Also my list could easily change daily depending how I feel. |

Mitch Hedberg would be number one on my list, easily.
Steve Martin, Cosby, and Seinfeld would also be way up there. |

Although Bill Cosby is #1 live, cause these days 75% of his act is improvised right on the spot.

Gonna have to check out more of Amazing Jonathan, I seen his comedy central special a few times and really enjoyed it but didn't think that highly of him. But yeah, most of these comedians everyone is listing are ones I'm a fan of or have seen here and there and have enjoyed.

Carlin.
Also, fuck Sarah Silverman. Yes, I get it, she's a woman and she uses a lot of ethnic slurs. I've heard a lot of black guys say most of the things she says and I heard it enough times to be tired of it. Fuck her. |

Yeah, Bill Hicks, jesus christ.
Dara O'Briain (sp) is sorely underrated as a standup as well. But that's just from having seen him completely upstage David Cross a while ago. |

Oh and Al Murray!
That guy is quality, he does this thing where he asked about 25 people there name and job and makes a gag about the job, but then goes back to them all the way through the show and remembers all of them. One time we were really close to the front, and he picked on my mate for drinking a fruit based drink (Cider) so he made him get rounds in with another guy near the front, great stuff. |
