Slipknot - new album, new masks (pic)

Slipknot have decided to call their new studio album 'Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses'.

Speaking to MTV News, drummer Joey Jordison said: "It's got the feel of Ministry crossed with Slayer and it's heavier than **** and it's really cool. Also, it's the first introduction to the shredder old-school guitar solos of Mick and Jim. Mick and Jim are two of the best guitar players I've ever heard, and I think it's cool that we never really showcased their talent at playing technical metal solos. But when you hear them play back-and-forth solos on that track, it's so insane that it kind of makes you laugh."

The single 'Pulse Of The Maggots' will be made available for download through www.slipknot1.com on 30th March.

Who the hell were saying that Slipknot can play back and forth solos? That Jordison guy needs to be hanged with his own intestines.

Nah, one of them is actually supposed to be pretty awesome, that I know of. He recorded some stuff for a guitar mag a while back.

And it was pretty hto.

Not the best solos I'ver ever heard, but still good shit.

I've been amazed by several members of Slipknot...It's a shame that their main act is so unimpressive to me...

To say the new material is a hybrid of Ministry and Slayer - I hope that isn't an exaggeration, because those are two of my favorite bands.

There is a good guitar solo in that song I posted ("Dont Get Close") I hope they do more of that on this album.

I've seen Mick Thompson play live, and he is really fast at guitar, he could definitely do some good solos.

As much as their music doesn't shine through with a whole lot of talent, I still say people see through what makes them enjoyable to other people. I know this is just gonna start another pointless argument about Slipknot. But as far as the intensity of the vocals/lyrics and how well the rest of the music brings the mood to life, I'm always gonna find myself enjoying Slipknot. IMO there is more to what meets the eye ear.

I think the reason i dislike them is the way they're portrayed by the pop metal media.

So many times i read about how insanely talented, creative, heavy and extreme they are and how intense cory's vocals are, and listening to them after that just seems like a huge huge let down. Because that description just isn't them for me.

That's true though. Their drummer was voted number one by metal hammer, and I think that is ridiculous. I break down Slipknot like this, essentially: as far as talent goes, it isn't consistant in their tracks. A number of songs will have good drumming and often some neat basslines, otherwise it's mediocre. Guitars have never been mind-blowing, that is for sure. Instrumentally, they aren't very creative. But as a lyricist and vocalist, Corey's got some talent IMO. On paper, I enjoy reading both his Stone Sour and Slipknot lyrics. And he has always been good about having variation in the way he presents his vocals. It's more emotionally-driven than most singers who rely on technique. That is what I like. Nothing that relys on talent, just anger unleashed in whatever shape or form it feels like being expressed. The composition of the music backs up this same concept. It is something that most musicians could do to begin with, but not many bands are daring enough to follow such a simple formula. Hardcore bands are very similar in this sense, but most hardcore bands stick to the roots of their genre. You can see where Slipknot of dwelled in different areas of music.

It's raw, unrestrained, and portrays how shitty life really is. I love it.

Basically what they are is a modern thrash-band with an unusually large young fan base, if they dropped the gimmick and didn't have the huge fan base they'd get a lot more of the uptight/tr00 metal crowd liking them, i think.

And at least the vocals on Slipknot generally don't sound as totally retarded as most of the scream bands out there.

I mean, the lyrics are still pretty lame, but most of these bands make me laugh at how sad they sound...

When you think about ratings, just keep in mind that Lars ulrich is an award-winning drummer, voted number one in a TON of magazines.

While we're at it, the Spice Girls have a lifetime acheivement award.

I wouldn't sweat your fave drummers not making the cut of these lists, because its's not indicitive of talent.

I am also guessing it's their intro song to the CD.

This song is the man. I like it a lot better than the song for the video game, that's for sure. I can see what they mean by sounding like Slayer tho. Blatent rip-off of signature Slayer solo dueling. I don't care tho.

The Pulse of the Maggots.

Yes. this song is very sick.

They sound more like they did in their self-titled album.

The ONLY problem I have with the song is the really abrupt cuts between verses of Corey's vocals. While the intensity of his style has taken a slight nosedive, I still enjoy it... it's just that they did kinda a crappy editting job for the vocal track. I'm sure it will be a lot better live. Six weeks away.
