Gah, it begins again (New GC WWE game)

March 11, 2004 - Say goodbye to WrestleMania and hello to WWE: Day of Reckoning. Publisher THQ and developer Yuke's have abandoned the old brand in favor of delivering GameCube owners an all-new take on the entertainment-sport of professional wrestling. Of course, this new endeavor, scheduled to ship exclusively for Nintendo's console this September, will still jump headfirst into the universe of the WWE, and will naturally feature both classic and new star power to play as and go up against. But you don't become a superstar in a single day and in Day of Reckoning you'll start from the very bottom.

That's right. Welcome to the "minor leagues" of wrestling. This is where you'll begin your climb from zero to hero. You'll have to build your potential superstar from scratch. Luckily, the game incorporates a detailed and flexible create-a-superstar feature with a wide variety of customization options. Configure face types, hair types, body frame, clothing, accessories, tattoos and more and then give your wrestler an audience-grabbing name and a full set of moves. He's ready to go.
Now it's time to pay your dues. Forget about going up against any wrestling legend just yet. First, it's amateur night. You'll fight every rookie jobber and wannabe out there, make a name for yourself and eventually advance to the next round, the big time -- where matches are filmed and aired on television by the WWE itself. If by some chance you manage to brawl your way to the very top and take hold of the Championship Belt, which is no easy task, you'll need to defend it again and again, so don't get too comfortable.

WWE: Day of Reckoning revolves around a deeper, more balanced storyline than any of Yuke's previous GameCube outings. This has been one of the areas the Japan-based development studio went back and concentrated on. As such, you can expect surprising plot developments that lead right into electrified matches.

You will make your way up in the world, from WWE Velocity & Heat to the real glitz and glamour of the big-time events. And you'll do it one match at a time, battling 40 of the WWE's top wrestlers in addition to a handful of thugs and no-talents. THQ is still mum on all of the wrestlers in the game -- the full roster should be available in a few days -- but we do know that pros John Cena, Randy Orton, Chris Benoit and Triple H will all be fully playable. Expect most of the hard hitters to be featured in the title, including a wide assortment of WWE Legends.

I love your skirt. Where did you get it?

Girls, Girls, Girls
By now you've seen the screenshots in this preview and you know that Day of Reckoning proudly boasts a full selection of female superstars. The game sports a full-blown Bra & Panties mode -- a first on a Nintendo console. Here you can choose your favorite fighting diva and go toe-to-toe -- or breast-to-breast, as it were -- in a bitter cat-fight complete with spandex shirts and shorts that can be snapped right off of the loser.

Grapple This
The good news is that the control mechanics from previous WWE titles have not been dramatically changed. Yuke's has instead made improvements to the tried-and-true setup, developing a deeper and more dynamic grappling system than ever before, according to THQ. Strong and weak grapples are back, but the game also features an all-new submission system as well as realistic reversals and superstar finishers.

In addition, Day of Reckoning utilizes a system by which you can target an opponent's specific body parts -- arms, legs, chest -- and wear him or her down by concentrating on those areas. On top of everything else, there's a new "superstar momentum shift" in which you can turn the tables on your opponent even after they have given you a good beat down and still come back to win the match.

Technology
WWE: Day of Reckoning is sure to be the prettiest wrestling entry for Nintendo's system yet. The shines with higher polygon models, significantly improved textures and real-time lighting and pyrotechnic effects. Collision detection issues in previous games have been addressed so that this time around wrestlers really look as if they are grabbing onto and fighting with one another. There are new cinematic camera angles that shoot the action as if it were being presented for television viewers. And there are subtle extras, like the new spandex cloth that the divas wear, which realistically stretches and slinks back into form.

Outlook
Strong. Last year's WWE WrestleMania title earned a solid 8.0 from IGNcube and Day of Reckoning looks to have made improvements in control, in presentation and in options. Plus, it features nearly-naked divas fighting to become more naked.

IGNcube will have much more on WWE WrestleMania tomorrow, but in the meantime feel free to feast your eyes on the first 15 or so high-resolution screenshots of the game in our media section below.

-cube.ign.com

God, didn't they say the same thing for Wrestlemania X-9???

The graphics certainly look better, although it's nothing really worth noting since WMXIX's weren't exactly bad. I'm glad they brought back the body part specific damage system that AKI used in No Mercy and other titles. Now if they don't fuck up the story mode, then we're cookin'. Also, if they leave out Ultimo Dragon, Sean O' Haire and Paul London for the Divas and some made up jobbers, I will stab someone with a rusty spork.

Well, since Yukes makes both the PS2 and the GC version, what do you expect?

They'll never be as good as AKI was with that engine.

Gah, the fools. Better not have screwed massively with the WM engine, since they'd managed to improve it quite a bit with XIX. Hopefully a decent single player mode will prevent it being a disaster like the first two games...

When ever they have written about going from 'zero to hero' in story mode, it never turns out that way. I want to be able to feel as if I have earned my title shot, beaten the people I need to progress further.

I think the only time that applied was in WWF Attitude.

I liked WM19, but there are several things they need to address and it WASN'T in the article:

-For God's sakes, I don't give a damn enough in a four player match that EVERYONE has to see the "My Head Hurts" cut scene. It's cool one on one, but with four people (Where the game rocks)?

-Riiight. Let everyone know I'm on special with crazy special effects for they can run away like the punks they are. The organic way of specials in WM18 was much better. Even so than the SmackDown! 'Blue Letters' system. If you got it, do it; no need for a starting taunt. Anybody remember the crazy back-and-forths in WM18?

-Is it me, or does WM19 have the greatest and smallest collection of original theme songs ever? Double the number please!!

My thoughts on the new game:

-Great visuals. I like how the Gamecube games can have a different artistic style from SD!'s hyper realistic look and still be nice.

-A pattern I'm seeing is the GCN series modifying the SD! series game concepts and adding little twist. Will we get a better Bra and Panies match (Like any of you give a damn)? The submission system from SD! is a welcome transfer. And the limb-damage system was better on WM19 anyway. "Quit stepping on my leg!"

-I never really cared much for single player modes in games like these when multiplayer is more fun to play. But if it promises great unlockables, I'll deal. Story lines better be good. Multyplayer season..?

-You're right, if they banish established stars for legends and divas I'll start stabbing people too. And I hope they wait a while before finishing the roster, Dead-Man Taker's coming back!

-WM19's counters and special-counter animations were better than SD:HCTP and much more convincing. Let this continue.

-Why isn't this called WM 20?!?!?

It's actually annoying as fuck at any point, because it stops the game and often gives the hurt person a leg up, especially if you're just staarting in on specials.

Meh. It's part of the No Mercy system.

However, I'm not a big fan of the A+B trigger. It's too easy to accidentally enter a grapple, thus botching perfect timing.

And more themes in general. I oft have trouble finding one that adequately fts the CAW I'm working on.

Part of the problem iwth hyper-realism is that the CAWS don't look like they're part of the game. Sure, the Rock and Austin look "real," but if you create a wrestler, real or ficticious, he prolly won't. One thing I like about WM XIX is that there was consistency at least.

The visuals here are awesome.

Well, with the same people making both games, it makes sense that they'll take what works and bring it over. The sub system will either be a Godsend o infuriating. As long as they don't make another "twist" like Revenge mode, I'll be happy.

I wish. Multiplayer season is a mjor dream of most of the wrestling video gamefandom.

Hopefully they don't need to do that. We need MORE PEOPLE in general anyways. The bosses on WM XIX just ate up valuable space...
