xbox live..is it worth it?

is it worth all the trouble and hassle of getting hooked up for it?
are there lots of people who really wanna play or just a bunch of goof-offs?
and what is, or how, can people CHEAT at this, according to some rumours of heard.

i got TOP SPIN for xbox and it's really cool and i would like to play online, but i'm hesitant.
