The original Ironman match by a freaking mile. Lesnar/Angle is a distant 2nd.

I must say the original as well, but The Rock VS Triple H at Judgment Day 2000 was a pretty good one as well.

To be honest, I know 30 minute iron man matches are in fact iron man matches, but I think they're half ass.
They're still no picnic to pull off obv, but it doesn't seem like a true iron man match unless it's the original 60 minutes

Also, did the Iron Man match being used at wrestlemania have anything to do with the Cal Ripken hype going on at that time?, since his nickname was the Iron Man and it was a huge deal. WWE loves to use stuff that relates to current events, especially around mania time.

I HATE the Bret/HBK iron man match, it’s fucking dull, I don’t know why it gets all the rave reviews, I think it pisses all over wrestling as a whole, by showing that most matches around that time would be done within 15 minutes, yet we are supposed to suspend our dis-belief and think that both these guys can go an hour and not be pinned, yet in matches other matches these guys have had with other folks they have won and lost within much faster times.

An Iron man match IMO should be built around the drama of the number of falls, I voted for HHH/Rock, because that one was the first one to properly build the drama into it, with Rocky chasing the pin falls towards the end.

The Mania 12 one didn’t have any of that, I would of preferred it a lot more if they just had a normal match that went an hour, it would of meant more than having an Iron man match with no fin falls, which made the stipulation pointless as they had to use the overtime to settle it.

The Brock/Angle one was done very well and used great story telling with Brock getting DQ’s on purpose, so he could injure Angle and get some cheap wins back. That was good psychology

I can’t remember the quality of the other ones, which indicates they probably weren’t all that.

So yeah, that’s my opinion

HBK/Bret, pretty easily.

They properly paced themselves throughout, didnt have lots of pinfalls going on when you only normally get maybe one in about a 25 minute main event match.
They started off defensively, not wanting to make the first mistake, not wanting to get behind the other by a fall, and the story told was fantastic. Bret stated he was going to out wrestle HBK but in the begining, HBK got the best of him, frustrating Bret. Bret started to lose his cool and acted more heelish, and eventually his skill in the wrestling department took over Shawn who couldnt hold it down forever, and Bret then had the advantage, with Shawn now going out of his way to employ his own style, which lead to mistakes.
Then in the last half of the match the pace had quickened considerably, and Bret realizes HE doesnt have to win at all. He just needs to NOT get counted out, pinned or submitted for the duration of the match. HBK realizes it, and is going all out trying to get a fall on the Hitman. You can see his desperation.
Shawn in doing so, makes that one major mistake Bret said he would capitalize on before the match, in a bunch of promos and backstage interviews, and locks in the sharpshooter...HBK writhes in pain trying to get free, as the seconds tick away..the HBK fans fall silent and their wind has left their sails, while Bret and his fans are taking over. Bret does the right thing and just holds on for the rest of the way, knowing he has the match due to what the stips entail. 60 Full minutes, if no fall was awarded, it's a draw, thus he retains.

The only odd part about it was the fact they added OT to it, as Gorilla wanted it that way. Because we all recall that Piper made this match while he was the interim GM, and he never stated there would HAVE to be a winner.
I guess returning GM's can do as they please.

So great pacing, great back and forth action, great story told from both guys, and a fantastic match, that sone call boring because they cant get past the first 25 minutes, which is a slow build, and some folk dont get that.

Much better match because they both could do it on their own, without tons of other guys getting involved, and interference everywhere, and a whole other load of sideshow attractions or gimmicks.

Rock/HHH was fun, but fun is it. In fact, the appearance of Taker that night outweighed the main event for the title, which isnt that great a thing, especially for the two guys wrestling in the main event.

that logic doesn't work because you're focusing on other wrestlers and not HBK/BRET. Tell me how many HBK or Bret Hart PPV matches around that time lasted 15 minutes? They usually went 30-40 minutes.

They trained and trained and trained (kayfabe and real wise) before the event, so their bodies were stronger and hence they would be able to kick out of more pinfalls and break/hold on with submissions

I voted Rock/Triple H.

It was a great, entertaining match that had me hooked and interested the entire time. The key to good entertainment is to keep the audience enthralled to the point that they lose track of time, and by the time it's over, they haven't realized that amount of time has passed. Triple H and Rock's match did this perfectly. Just like Shawn vs. Bret, it was the two best guys in the company going one on one for an hour, and it told a great story. It flows perfectly and the 60 minutes feels like far less.

I can't say the same about Bret vs. Shawn at WM 12. I think Dave made a lot of great points, maybe not neccessarily about the disbelief that they could go an hour without scoring a single fall on one another, but more in that the match, for a great portion of it, was very slow and dull. Arguably, many wrestlers could go out and do arm bars and headlocks and wristlocks for 20 minutes and add an element of psychology to it. I found Rock and Triple H's full-blown, all-out 60 minute war to be much better than Shawn and Bret's "technical masterpiece."
