Who is the best videogame-themed rockband?
I think it comes down to The Megas, Stemage, and Game Over.

Minibosses only play the songs as is, which is still cool, but it lacks the creativity of the previous three. Their production is kinda shitty, and they're pretty bad live, too. Megadriver is worth a mention, although they are a bit bland, and being that the music is mostly from the genesis games, its not as recognizable. The Advantage just plain sucks.

So as for my top three...

These guys cover megaman songs, and add lyrics to them. Most of it is cheesy, but enjoyably so. Gonna buy their album. They've got six songs on the myspace page, and one of them is available for download at OC Remix.

Been a fan of these guys for a long time. No lyrics, but easily the best of the three, in terms of the guitar work. And the production is also the best of the three. Everything sounds clean, and almost professionaly done. On top of all of that, every song they make is free to download at the aformentioned site. Honest to god, the only bad things I can say about them is that they very rarely do anything outside of metroid, and that their name is kind of bland.

Basically like the megas, except a bit more talented, and they cover all nintendo games. Definitly worth checking out. Like the megas, they have a few songs to check out on the site, but to hear them all, you have to buy the cd's. Although Galbaldia Hotel has the first cd available for download.

So, I'd say my favorite is stemage, easily. Free music, and it's damn good at that. What say you, videogame forum?

They must be the only band you've heard then, because they sound like one guy did the whole thing on a keyboard and music studio program. I imagine it's pretty cool if you havn't heard any other options. Even the minibosses put them to shame.

they don't even use keys. and i prefer them to anything you posted above. i could give a fuck less about production quality. they rock all of that shit out on guitars, and i love it. their cover of "contra - alien's lair & boss music" is sick, not to mention "batman - stage 1."

Having gone to UGA, I always heard a lot about Contra Band...but besides this one Youtube clip I don't really know much about them. Pretty cool in a very nerdy way though.

i love horse the band but they don't really fall into the video game category anymore. really, they only used a handful of riffs to begin with.
