Was there a difference between Ken and Ryu

In street fighter 2? I always thought they were the same but different character sprites. But then have heard from some that Ken was a little faster but Ryu was slightly stronger.

Wondering this as I watch SF2 the anime movie, much better than the live action one. Random Israel's Son song by Silverchair in the movie too.
