Golden Flopportunity
Sherlton Benjamin, who pinned Triple H in his first match on Raw, has since become Hardcore Holly. Every time he almost interested me, he fizzled out, to the point where I really can't take him seriously as a competitor. Am I completely alone? And if not, can he still become a top dog in years to come?

I disagree. The guy is athletic and entertaining as hell. Since his move to ECW, he's definitely been on the right track. He's still young, so I definitely think he has it in him. One of my current faves.

I dunno. Just seeing him walk down the ramp instantly disappoints me. It's like, during any given match, I think to myself "How long this time, Shelton? How long 'til you drop the ball again?"

I can understand, as I felt the same way when he was on Raw, but like I said, he has regained support over the last year or so.

I would say there is more responsibility to blame on the writing. He gets slightly over, the writers get bored with him and he's put back in the toy box.
Very few people have TRULY gotten over in the past five years. And even less have been in decent angles and storylines. |

I'm pretty optimistic about him atm. I do agree that his whole run on the Raw brand was rather lackluster. He had a great match with Matt Hardy to win the US strap and has had great matches with Kennedy and Jeff Hardy since then. Maybe if this title reign turns out to be a bust, I'll be more inclined to agree.

I've regained quite a bit of interest in Shelton recently. He's generally a good performer, and as Xero said, most of the fault with Shelton's lack of direction should probably be placed on the writing.
Since winning the US Title, I've felt a lot more energy in Shelton's character. If they can go somewhere with him, then I think he could be something very good for the WWE. They really dropped the ball with him back when he initially moved over to RAW. |

Bring back Shelton's Momma.
.... Uhhh.... but yeah, the writing is pretty much to blame for his constant starting up and shoved back down. |

He doesn't have a buyable character yet. Even this "Gold Standard" stuff doesn't work. It just doesn't feel like "him." The closest they came to this was his debut on RAW as the uppity, kind of cocky face. Then they downplayed it. Makes no sense.

Maybe that's my snag: he's got a nickname that came before he earned it, and no personality. Because it's not that his matches aren't good, it's that he, as a peformer, is just so...dull.
Again, tho, maybe it's just me. |

He has the potential to make his feud with Hardy this year be as good as MVP/Hardy last year. Plus he has a world title shot. I am very proud of the WWE at this moment I think they are doing quite a bit right, not only with Benjamin but with a lot of things. They really turned it around after the draft and have been pretty steady since.

I think Shelton Benjamin could one day be a top main eventer. It all comes down to the writers and their habit of employing people and then deciding they have "nothing for them".

Yeah, but he was also a "star" in the early revival of ECW. I"m not sayin' he's great by any stretch of the imagination. Just that I get the same feeling, expectation-wise, for both men. Benjamin is a superior performer, but he feels so blah.
Again, it may just be me and, if I"m lucky, he may change my tune down the road. But for now...I dunno. Just waiting for him to go nowhere again. |

Honestly, I think they're doing a good thing with MVP. He god a good solid run on Smackdown which was the best thing about Smackdown and one of the best in WWE in 2007. This year they've laid off him a bit, kept him visible, but also held off him a little. He got a water-test of a face reaction a while ago with HHH, and now he's going to be part of a multi-man main event. They may not be doing it on purpose, but it's a good way of keeping his star from burning out too fast. They could make the mistake of pushing him into the full-on ME way too soon, and make a total Orton out of him. What has he been around for, about 2 years now? He has had a good deal of success and is still solid in the eyes of the fans. Let him take his time going up that ladder.

Burke is another guy that had a ridiculous nickname. How is somebody with a lisp considered "Thilver Tongued"? I think that nonesense helped him not get a real reaction.

Okay I read about half this thread. Everyone says the writing is to blame, but when he starts to get in the spotlight he flops a lot of moves. When he starts going on one of those streaks, the writes put him back where he belongs. Therefore, Shelton is to blame for his current spot. This will probably be the time they give Shelton a chance for a long time, so he better not blow it.

Shelton has been great as of late, and I finally started believing in him again. He's been a lot more crisp as of late and he seems more comfortable in the ring than ever. I look forward to his matches.
Elijah Burke is depressing to me. It seemed like they really had some big plans for him, and I was all ready to buy into it...but then he just jobbed like 47,000 times to Charles Michael Punk and faded away into oblivion. I was thinking part of this had to do with Marcus Cor Von's departure, because it seemed like they were being pushed together, but surely they could have figured out something new for him by NOW. |

Shelton was the breakout star of 2004 when he came to Raw. He was way over as a face, and it's unfortunately that he got lost in the shuffle following an poorly directed heel turn that made no sense.
Naysayers will harp on his mic skills, which isn't fair. Shelton has charisma/personality that comes out when he wrestles. He doesn't need to get on the mic to get over. In that regard, he reminds me of Sting, who was obviously popular because of the charisma/personality he showed in the ring, not on the mic. The Shelton Benjamin I want to see is the one that locked up with HBK, and was worthy as a MOTY candidate. That is all. |

Silly how? It's a shot to your face, and it goes with his "obsession with gold" shtick. Plus, as long as he's champ, he could go on about how anybody who wants a Title Shot can get as many as they like. Referencing both his title and his finisher.
