Ignorance Is Bliss 2: The Dark Knight
Pandemic had a team downunder (Brisbane) working on a Batman game... but...
It all began has Pandemic worked a deal with DC/WB to make a Batman game. It was gonna be mythology IP, and they were deep in development of an open world Batman game(!!). But the first big hurdle was that they were using an indoor game engine (from Saboteur) to make an open world game. It didn;t make things easy. Then our favorite publisher EA comes along and says, "Hey, base your game on The Dark Knight. Have it done by movie's premier. Good luck." So on top of in-house tech issues, they were rushing a Dark Knight make over. Of course the game didn't make TDK's release. Their second chance was a dual campaign with the DVD's release. Probably not a direct part of the problem, was TDK being the best thing since Jesus. When it was clear the game would not make the DVD release the game was canned - and so was the Brisbane studio when EA began making cuts. A sad end to what could have been an interesting Batman game and a dev team's mark in the superhero-game pantheon. |

It would have sucked balls, but the logic behind stopping development doesn't make much sense to me.
The Dark Knight is the biggest movie of the decade, and given the quality and subject matter will likely be a massive hit for years and years to come. With that being said, I don't really understand why they've 'missed the boat' by not having it ready for the theatrical or dvd release. I'm sure there'd be plenty of interest in a quality TDK video game anytime, whether it be in a couple years, or in five years. Doesn't really make much sense to give up on making one, when it will be a hit no matter when it comes out. Look at Ghostbusters |

The movie didn't do nearly as well as they wanted to either. It wasn't near the success culturally or commercially that TDK was. It wasn't even one of the bigger movies of that year. It was borderline dissapointing, commercially. It did okay, and made money, but not the way a Batman movie would be expected to. Now it's on the radar. Until TDK, the Michael Keaton version was the cultural staple. Even with nearly 20 years of inflation on it's side, Begins failed to make as much money as the Tim Burton Batman.
So, it's a different story. |

Star Wars and Lord of the Rings too. Sure, they have rabid fans but so does Batman. Those games are based on the movies, and the closer they stay to them the more successful they are. A The Dark Knight video game would be more successful than any other type of Batman game, on association alone.
Just like a Lord of the Rings game based on the movies is more marketable than one based on the books, or a Star Wars game in the style of the movies is more marketable than one based on the cartoon. |

Yeah I was thinking that.
Who the fuck cares about TDK video game when it will probably suck? AA sounds awesome and won't be restricted to one movie. Not saying AA won't end up sucking, but I think it has a better chance to be good than TDK. |

And Ghostbusters has the benefit of--I don't know, actually looking like a halfway decent game to bolster its sales.
Almost entirely by the virtue that it's not being shelled out as part of a movie deal, but is being made specifically for the sake of being a cool game. So... yeah. Ghostbusters comparison. Not so much. |

I have no remorse for TDK game, I wish they would have went forward with an open-world Batman game. Although it looks like they weren't really ready to do that even before EA came in and acted like EA acts. AA will be great from I've seen.
