Sunn0))) are more at the extreme end of things really - there's a lot of far more listenable stuff out there. Which isn't to say there's not a lot of nasty unpleasant sounding doomy and sludgy stuff around.

Electric Wizard cannot be faulted.

SunnO are way at the extreme end, like way too 'out there' for me personally.

Crowbar are brilliant though, just look at them:

Crowbar is a good place to start on the Sludge front.

I'd also reccomend what I would consider the first "Sludge" albums: Black Flag's "My War," and some of the early Swans albums, if you can find them.

Another huge mention is the Melvins' "Gluey Porch Treatments." This record actually kicked off two separate scenes: Seattle's "Grunge" scene as well as the New Orleans "Sludge Metal" scene. EyeHateGod's Jimmy Bower has gone as far as to refer to Gluey as "his personal fucking Bible."

I would mention EyeHateGod themselves, but you only really need to hear one song and you've heard them all.

A couple more bands I would reccomend would be the Obsessed (or anything involving Wino, like Spirit Caravan or Hidden Hand), Clutch (a band that seems to inspire a lot of Southern Metal, Metalcore, and Sludgecore. Especially start at the self-titled instead of Transnational Speedway League), Karma 2 Burn (who have recently gotten back together, some instrumental sludge), The Sword (who put out of the best albums last year in "Gods of the Earth"), and Kyuss (members would go on to form Queens of the Stone Age).

Yeah, that should give you a good start.

Kyuss I will assume WeX has heard, they are godly, also totally agree on Clutch, Melvins, Swans and BF, never listened to the Obsessed myself, one to czech out

Also EHG are great when you're in a certain mood and like the bluesier type stuff

Also there's a lesser known British (I think) band called Sloth who are worth a listen, very slow though.

Clutch are surely impossible to hate. They can jam a lot live so I'm told, which isn't to everyone's taste, so maybe that explains it.

That or WeX just sucks.

i might suck

it might have been just that they are so different than coheed who are the reason i was at that show. i had not, and still have not, heard clutch on record before. this thread has given me some homework to do.

I would reccomend either the self-titled, Elephant Riders, or Robot Hive: Exodus

I've always been partial to Blast Tyrant, as far as Clutch go. Some catchy songs on there.

Clutch puts on the best live show possible.

Also, check out their side group, The Bakerton Group. It's Clutch without the singer Neil Fallon (although he plays guitar with them live). They jam hard.

I saw The Melvins supported by Flipper, with Krist Novoselic on bass just before christmas. Love me some stoner grunge. So much, that I am a stoner, and was in a grunge band for years.
