This is the UFL!

The UFL, coming this fall!

Even Vince didnt have the balls to directly compete with the NFL durring their regular season. But the UFL automatically has some major credibility with Fassel, Green, Haslett and Cottrel as the coaches of the four teams. Its also got a major network deal with Versus for Thursday Nights which will be interesting.

Offcials of the new league held a press conference in San Francisco this morning and announced, among other things, the four head coaches for its inaugural season: Green will coach the San Francisco franchise, Ted Cottrell will coach the New York franchise, Jim Fassel is at Las Vegas, and Jim Haslett is at Orlando. According to its web site, the UFL was designed for "the enjoyment of fans in major markets where professional football is not played.
uh-huh... this sounds like a horrible idea...

isn't the idea of putting a "pro-sports" franchise of anytime in LV always considered a bad idea...

I do love they all practice together and then travel for games... game in Hartford? as in Hartford CT?

while this seems doomed to fail worse then the XFL, the idea of Pelosi's husband being involved says it might stick around a little bit.

I'm intrigued. It already has more credibility as a real league than the XFL did. Even though XFL had some interesting ideas, the fact that WWF was behind it made it seem staged and "sports entertainment" from the start.

This league has some guys who are legitimate football names and could land a huge coup with Michael Vick potentially.

What I am the most curious about is where the teams will play. Obviously it would be a terrible idea to put the LA team in the Coliseum or Rose Bowl, but it runs the risk of looking non-professional if they play somewhere small.

That seems like the right choice. I just wonder what they will be. I feel like for them to be able to have some success in LA they need it to be highly publicized/glamourous, or else nobody will notice.

Had they done this in the srping/summer, in that period where we dream of Football, it would be great.

It would be like AAA Football. With the 2nd tier College players that dont make the NFL.

I'm fairly certain thats pretty much what they're aiming for. From the sounds of it I think they are going to use players that make practice squads or barely miss getting cut, get them some game experience and a second chance at actually being productive at the NFL level. Whether it fails or succeeds I don't see the harm in their aims. I'm not going to pretend that its going to produce a ton of great players because obviously if the majority have been cycled through the NFL already it won't do that.

I think it will be nice for Thursday/Friday night games if I want a football fix. The number of people who have the Versus channel over NFL Network is quite drastic. In all actuality, the offering from the UFL may force the NFL to offer the NFL Network into more homes. That can only be a good thing.

I don't understand why there's not really minor league football. Don't try to compete with the NFL, try to sell out 20k seat stadiums and be a place for those thousands of college players who won't get the chance for whatever reason to play NFL or CFL.

Mostly money, even on a small level it costs a lot to put these games on... 20K stadiums? that would be like a small college or something... most NFL stadiums are 40K+.

The costs to put this one and wanting to make a profit... and they wouldn't get much for the tickets, leaves little to pay the players. Which means you wont get a lot of x-college players, who can make more money and put their bodies at less risk using their college degree to get a job.

the physical toal/risk on a football player is high, it's not like baseball players who are willing to spend time in A, AA, AAA trying to make it big on little pay and long buss rides, the risk for a football player is huge.
