So I was thinking about Transformers

It would be sweet if Adult Swim would quit making crap like Delocated or Tim & Eric which are not cartoons and instead did what it takes to do a loyal remake of Transformers. I wouldn't mind if they updated what the vehicle forms were and cleaned up plot holes and inconsitancies (in the first few shows everyone could fly, after a bit the autobots lost that abilitiy).

If not maybe Sci-Fi or someone else should. But make it adult, not some kiddy crap, like all the ones they have been making. And by adult, I don't mean with tons of cussing or nudity, but you know more like how King of the Hill is adult.

A transformers series that is as intense as Transformers the Movie would rule all.

That would be very awesome, indeed. A remake of the G1 Transformers would be incredible. They sometimes flirt with the idea, but for some reasons there always has to be a new hook, or a new charatcer, something altered that just makes it impossible call it anywhere near faithful.

One thing that Transformers did that I thought was pretty adult, was that even though these things were robots, the concepts of life and death were there. Right at the start of the animated movie, Megatron fucked up some of my favourite Autobots. There was some serious emotional weight there. And I didn't even watch the movie when I was a child. That weight is still there to this day, after not having watched the series for years.

I wouldn't go overly adult with it, but human characters should die, and the occasional loss of an Autobot or Decepticon would add depth to it. Unfortunately, as sad as it is, the whole purpose of Transformers is to pretty much sell toys. The whole creative aspect of it comes second to the making of the quick buck.

Hell, the only reason they did the animated movie was because they wanted to bring in new toys. I'd love to see a Transformers remake where the creativity and emotional drive behind the show was the key focus, and the marketing was just a side product.

That would be progressive but it's never gonna happen. I'd love for Power Rangers to go back to the arc style of stories from MMPR S2/S3, but... blah.

I feel exactly the same way about Power Rangers. I've, for the longest time, questioned why they keep creating these "Power Rangers: Something" series, but there hasn't been a good one since the original. What's always got me is that the children that watch these shows know who "Power Rangers: Forest Clean-Up Patrol" are, but they may not have a fucking clue who the actual Power Rangers are.

A reboot of the series, going back to the original concept of the Power Rangers, including to the original theme song -- I'd watch it.

The thing with that is, Japan already set the standard with changing teams every year. We adopted it since that means we could pick up new kids and pay them dirt cheap for 30+ episodes (+ one cross over special) and call it a day. The thing is, that doesn't mean you can't spread a plot over a long period of time. DinoThunder is a semi-recent one that was actually good at this.

With Transformers, there really wasn't much greatness to return to. I've watched some G1 episodes and they are pretty silly. The big one is the movie but to be honest we can't expect that on a regular basis. It had circumstances attached that helped it show the most iconic moments (Autobot slaughter, death of Prime; not for plot development - they needed to kill the old line and introduce the new toys). Add to that the writers themselves admitted they pulled half the plot out of their ass.

That's what I figured happened with the Power Rangers. They just follow whatever Japan is doing, because it's cheap and easy. It's sad, but that's the way it is, I guess.

Transformers and Beast Wars, to me, were the only two sagas of the universe to really care about.

Beast Wars is a direct sequel to G1, so I dig it. The Japan Transformers are all weak. Animated is really decent, despite the half ass animation. It probably has the best version of Megatron ever, and it serves Starscream's legacy well.

I think that's part of my main problem with subsequence entries into the Transformers universe -- some of the characters like Megatron, Optimus Prime, Ironhide and Starscream are re-invented, which is all well and good if they're done well, but it completely ruins my canonical memories of G1.

Yes, G1 did have some holes in it, but it also had heart. A lot of heart.
