Rate The Moment #2
Many thanks to everyone who "Rated The Moment" last time around. It was a pretty high scoring affair with Shawn Michaels first title win scoring an 8.4. The moment seemed pretty popular with some people, and the score appears to be quite high. I'm sure there will be many moments that beat it in the future, but it seems to have left a lasting legacy. Next up...

Edge Cashes In The Briefcase



Main Participants: Edge, John Cena
Event: New Year’s Revolution
Date: January 8th 2006

In the build up to New Year’s Revolution 2006, we start almost a year earlier at Wrestlemania 21. On the run up to Wrestlemania 21, Chris Jericho had an idea, which he ran by Eric Bischoff. The idea was to place 6 men in a ladder match at Wrestlemania, where the winner would receive a guaranteed shot at the WWE title shot. The contract, valid for a year, would hang over the ring in a briefcase. Eric Bischoff announced the competitors would be Jericho himself, Christian, Chris Benoit, Edge, Kane and Shelton Benjamin. The match was amazing, and Edge came out on top as the victor, and with the briefcase. Over the summer, a heel Edge became even bigger when he was paired with Lita. It was slightly unusual in that Edge and Lita’s real life relationship was in the public eye after their affair and Matt Hardy’s subsequent release from WWE. This really seemed to put Edge over as a heel. Matt Hardy returned to WWE in what at the time seemed real, but in reality was a worked shoot. Hardy interfered in Edge;s match with Kane and was officially bought back to feud with Edge. The feud was intense, but professional. Edge beat Hardy at SummerSlam, after the match was stopped due to Hardy losing too much blood. They had a Steel cage match at Unforgiven, which Hardy won and then they had a “Loser leaves Raw” Ladder match, where Edge defended the Money In The Bank briefcase. Edge won the match, keeping him on Raw and further increasing his stock in the WWE.

Edge suffered a torn pectoral shortly after, but WWE officials saw value in keeping Edge on TV, so introduced a talk show called The Cutting Edge. It was around this time that Edge began referring to himself as The Rated-R superstar. Edge used the show to start a feud with then intercontinental champion, Ric Flair who had recently been arrested for road rage. The show was that insulting that Sgt. Slaughter and Michael Hayes came out to stop the show. Edge attacked them both and laid them out in the middle of the ring. After weeks of insults, Flair finally broke and a match was soon booked for the New Year’s Revolution PPV. Edge was disqualified at the PPV against Ric Flair, and it was thought that his involvement in the PPV was over.

In the meantime, John Cena claimed the WWE championship from JBL at Wrestlemania 21, soon replacing the belt with a spinner belt (the one we see today). JBL claimed that his belt was the real one and that he was still the champion, but John Cena beat him for that too, and retired that belt, keeping his spinner belt. Cena left Smackdown as Eric Bischoff’s first draft pick in 2005. Cena and Bischoff didn’t see eye to eye at the start, as Bischoff wanted Cena to help with his vendetta against ECW. John wouldn’t help so Bischoff chose Jericho to be the person to deal with Cena. John Cena eventually beat Jericho in a “You’re Fired” match. It was around this time that fans started to boo John Cena. His next opponent was Kurt Angle. Cena introduced the STFU in this angle, and while losing by disqualification in their initial meet, Cena pinned Angle at Survivor Series that year. In early December, it was announced that there would be a fourth Elimination chamber. Bischoff held qualification matches, where Kurt Angle, Shawn Michaels, Carlito, Chris Masters and Kane all qualified, with Jon Cena having to defend his title against all five at New Year’s Revolution. John successfully defended his title, but it came at a price. He was wearing the proverbial crimson mask and could barely stand at the end of the PPV.

Well, it was thought to be the end. Vince McMahon came out and told staff to “Raise The Cage” as the night wasn’t over. Edge had cashed in his title shot and ran to the ring, much to the appreciation of the fans. Cena stood up, but Edge knocked him down with a few vicious looking punches. Edge speared Cena twice and took the title for the first time with the fans in attendance going crazy. New Year’s Revolution closed with Edge holding the title aloft.

Shock Value: How shocking was the outcome, (1 is "you called it from the beginning", 10 is "TOTAL SWERVE")
Reaction: What reaction did you have to this personally (1 is "YAWN", 10 is "OMFG...I LOVED IT!")
Memory: Is it one of the first things you think of when asked about wrestling? How etched into your wrestling history is this event (1 is "who did what now?" and 10 is "are you kidding, I watch repeats on Youtube every week)
Legacy: Did the outcome leave a lasting legacy (i.e. did the winner of a match go on and have 12 title reigns, was it so controversial it is still talked abut today, etc.) 1 is no legacy and 10 is Legendary

Shock Value: 9. I guess the circumstances and the outcome are what make it shocking. It had to happen at some point, but it didn't seem expected at the time. Him cashing his case in was expected, but doing it after that match and winning were shockers.

Reaction: 7. I was really happy Edge became a world champion, but I didn't mark out like I would have as a child. I'm just jaded.

Memory: 7. I remember it as one of my favorite's first title win. It's not one of the biggest memories though.

Legacy: 6. I don't think it's exactly the most "classic" event as far as the grand scheme of things go. Not really a knock to the moment, but although it was big at the time it was just another title change at the end of the day. Edge has gone on to be a major player, so it was important in that respect. It wasn't really the beginning of an era though. He dropped it shortly after, and his legacy really took shape in the years that followed, rather than in one grand moment. It wasn't exactly the Austin or Shawn treatment. I'm tempted to go 7, but 6 seems right.

Shock:9 IT was the first time MITB was cashed, and a nice lil swerve for us!

Reaction: 8 I hated Super Cena, so to see Edge come down to swipe the title away made my eyebrows arch.

Memory:6 I won't forget, but I won't jump out my seat to watch

Legacy:8 This helped to cement the 'ultimate opportunist' gimmick

Shock:10 - Obviously, we knew the briefcase HAD to be redeemed at some point, but I thought Edge was going to wait it out until 'Mania.

Reaction: 7 - I wasn't a big Cena fan, but tbh, I wasn't a HUGE Edge fan. It was nice to see something different, which was more the basis for my reaction.

Memory:5 - I remember it well, but there are plenty more occasions that I would think about before this one

Legacy:6 - It was Edge's catapult to the main event. However, he lost the title 3 weeks after at Royal Rumble. They could have left it for 'Mania though and had a ready made feud, leading from No Way Out to 'Mania. instead, we saw Edge take on Foley (which was a great match, btw) but he was still left out of the title picture for a little while.

Reaction: 4 - Edge was a sure win when he came out.

Memort: 1 - Forgot about it until someone posted a video about it.

Legacy: 5 - The run did nothing for him. I still have no idea why they even gave him the belt, just to drop it a month later.

This might be a slightly biased opinion as I am Canadian, but I will forever remember this moment. I am a huge fan of all canadian wrestlers (Edge, Christian, Val, Lance, Jericho, Test (R.I.P.), etc) and seeing one of the guys I had cheered for since I was a kid because he was Canadian, made the moment extra special. He worked so hard to be where he is at currently, battling numerous injuries along the way. I believe that this moment will not rank up their with HBK/Bret at WM for others, but it certainly does for me.

Memory: 8, I go and watch it sometimes on youtube. Great moment, thinking back it would have been better if they did it like they do MITB nowadays, no Vince intro.

Legacy: 9, it started Edge becoming the heel he is today. Only guy coming close to Edge is Jericho.

Shock Value: 10 - First time the case was cashed in, and it was done at the best/worst time depending on the point of view. It was unexpected to see him, and it was awesome.

Reaction: 10 - When he came out, I knew he was going to win it, but that didn't take away from my reaction. I marked the fuck out when he got the three count (though I still don't see the reasoning behind it taking two spears).

Memory: 9 - Again, it was the first time the case was cashed in, and it started his big singles run (I thought). Plus, he took down Super Cena and struck seemingly without warning.

Legacy: 8 - It cemented the Ultimate Opportunist gimmick and, to me, set up his other MITB win (two if you count taking the case from Kennedy......Kennedy.)

Shock - 10 - Never thought they would do this to Cena ("NOT THIS WAY!") It was fantastic.

Reaction - 10 - Awesome moment. This began the Edge character we know and love today, the Ultimate Opportunist, and what made him different from just another angry heel.

Memory - 5 - Would probably be in the middle of a list of my top wrestling memories.

Legacy - 3 - In terms of Edge's character, this is what started to make him, but it's not the whole picture, and it certainly had not lasting impact on anything as a whole. When Edge hangs up his boots there are so many other memories that will be pointed to before this point that I really don't think this one is of much consequence besides a really awesome mark out moment that kind of got the ball rolling on a heel gimmick.

Shock Value: 9. Against anyone else it would have been lower, but dropping this on SuperCena wasn't expected at all.
Reaction: 10. Edge's first world title = HUGE mark-out moment.
Memory: 6. It was epic, and one of the best ememories in recent years, but not of all time.
Legacy: 7. This started the Edge we have today, but really didn't cement it.

Shock Value: 9 no one could of thought edge would cash in there was a perfect.

Reaction : 10 , Was pissed off that cena retained after numerous spots to get rid of him in the chamber, To have egde come out to win the belt saved the pay per veiw for me

Memory:8 Look i think the fact that this is number two in rate the moment says enough.

Legacy: 7 Probably the start of edge being the greatest transitional champion ever

Shock Value: 10 - Being the first time it was cashed in, it was done well. I don't think anyone can honbestly say they saw it coming, or weren't surprised by it.

Reaction: 10 - I hadn't ordered the PPV and read the results online. When I saw what happened, I screamed like a little girl, ordered the replay, invited all my friends around and screamed like a little girl again with them after they watched it go down.

Memory: 9 - I actually still watch it at least fortnightly on DVD Edge has always been a favourite of mine (We share a birthday also.....) so yeah. Good times

Legacy: 9 - I think it was the event that finally made Edge "Main Event". In 5-10 years time when they look back on his career I believe that will be the event that shows that.

Average: 8.5, It could have been GREAT. They should have just let edges music play with him carrying out the brief case, hand it to the ref then spear the shit out of Cena twice.

I think it took away from the moment with Mr. McMahon announcing it.

Shock: 10 - Total shock to me. When he lost the IC title match by DQ and acted all "I have more important things to worry about", I seriously didn't even think about the briefcase.

Reaction: 10 - I was actually sat on the edge of my seat spazzing out shouting at the TV. Hadn't done that in a long time. Cena kicking out of the first Spear made me even more crazy which was great fun.

Memory: 8 - Total swerve and very memorable way to win a first World Title.

Legacy: 6 - As great as the end to that show was, sadly it'll always be tagged with a piss-poor three week title reign that ended before it barely started.

Shock Value: 10 Just when we thought John Cena was unbeatable, he lost. It was amazing and at the end of a PPV none the less
