Netbooks
Are they worth it? You know for working with Net Beans, Turbo C, Dreamweaver, Counter Strike, Songs and long life battery. Is it worth a buy?

I bought a netbook last month and love it. MSI Wind. I installed Mac OS X on it and it is incredible. Runs so beautifully.

It's probably good for anything that is not crazy video intensive. Like it can't even play HD videos on youtube, it's all choppy and stuff. And I don't think you can install certain Adobe programs because the resolution is too small b/c of the small screen. Dreamweaver might be OK but I heard it won't even let you install Photoshop. But I am sure there are ways around that.

You probably can install Photoshop. I was just reading all this stuff about people saying Adobe doesn't let you install it unless your resolution is at least 1024x768... and netbooks usually are like 1024x600 I think. But I know there are ways/"hacks" around it.

Besides that I am coming over to the states next year and I am willing to buy a good laptop besides the netbook with a dedicated graphic card and probably a good intel core 2 duo or AMD processor.

I have one (Asus EEE 900HA) and must say that it is not underpowered unless you do something heavy, like video editing or encoding. Yeah, it's not the fastest thing in the world but it's not intended as a desktop or laptop replacement.

It can't run 1080 but on a screen that size why would you need to? Does 720 fine and I can play my ripped DVD Isos without a problem over a wireless network. (The HD on YouTube drawback is flash-related I believe.)

Overall, if you're not expecting to use it as your only PC and need something portable it's MORE than worth it. Web surfing, photo editing, light video editing and all the "standards" are more than adequate.

I'd recommend getting a 10 inch screen because they tend to have the bigger keyboard (I did not truly realize this until after I got mine). And if you can, go physical hard drive instead of SSD because it's cheaper, bigger and can be swapped out for even larger drives. You just gain a bit of weight and bulge, but it's really negligible.

As for games, while not "current" games it runs the GTA games flawlessly (up to SA), so it's a decent gaming machine if you stay back to 2004 or so. I think it runs the Source engine pretty well, too, though I haven't tried it.

I've got mine dual booting XP and Linux. Have had no real problems whatsoever and was the best $340 I've spent in a while. The only thing I wish it had was an SVideo output instead of just VGA.

You can get an iPod Touch/iPhone for less money and there's even an official Kindle app for it.
