Moments that made them Legends

Lets look back at the moments that made wrestlers into legends:

Stone Cold Steve Austin:

1. King of the Ring promo: "..well Austin 3:16 says I just whipped your ass!"
2. Wrestlemania 13: The Last Gasp as Bret Hart cinched in the sharpshooter. That iconic shot of the blood squirting out of Austins forehead cemented his Bad ass, never quit attitude.

I feel that years of different moments make legends, but there are obviously more significant moments in time that define a pivotal moment in their career. That is what people will be highlighting.

Yeah, the Austin 3:16 speech may be a legendary moment, it wasn't the moment that made Austin a legend. I'd imagine it rather being the defining moment that a big star solidified themselves as an all-time great. To me, that would usually be at the tail end of a career, or at a pivotal moment of change. Austin 3:16 was the start of that journey. You don't go from being strictly midcard to being a "legend" overnight. Even the Bret Hart match wasn't the moment that made him a legend. I'd go as far as to say that the moment that solidified Austin as a legend was WrestleMania X-Seven, the culmination of the journey of the original Austin face run.

Now, if what you actually meant to say was 'which are the moments that got these guys over and tipped them over the edge into becoming megastars in the business', that would be completely different. Yeah, Austin vs Bret would qualify. Sting vs Flair would qualify. For me Hulk vs Andre was the 'tip over the edge' moment for Hulk... the 'legend moment' came three years later against Warrior.

Well, it depends what you qualify as a "legend moment," as Carl says. But truthfully, I think Hogan body slamming Andre the Giant was pretty fucking legendary.

I think the moment Chris Benoit became a legend, was when he won the 2004 Royal Rumble. That was when it became apparent he wasn't just going to be remembered for his underappreciated wrestling skills, but he was actually going to be treated as a main eventer by the company. It's when Benoit became the complete package, both in terms of ability and in storylines.

With Eddie Guerrero, I know this is a bit of a boring answer, but when he defeated Brock Lesnar for the WWE Championship. I remember thinking that I should perhaps order the event in case Eddie did win the WWE Title, because it would be a pivotal moment. Eddie did win the title, and it was quite a surprise. It was another big "breaking the glass ceiling moment."

Mick Foley became a legend after The Undertaker threw him off the Hell in a Cell, and then Chokeslammed him through it, in my opinion. And Austin's is hard to pinpoint, but I'll throw him getting in Mike Tyson's face up there. It's very symbolic of when Austin didn't just become an icon within wrestling, but an icon within pop-culture.

I disagree with the Benoit one.

The moment i thought he was legendary, was ( I think it was a RR ) against Kurt Angle where they had one of the most amazing matches i can think of and Angle won, but as Benoit got up and started to leave, the crowd stood up and went ape shit for him. Because of the match.

Same with Lesnar (Mania 19).

Even though he had such a short career, it was impactful, long after he was gone, and I do consider him a legend.

Bret Hart at Wrestlemania 10 after winning the title, and having the babyface wrestlers put him up on their shoulders right in the middle of the ring, I'd say was his moment where he crossed into legend status.

Not trying to stir up any trouble here, but the screwjob transformed Vince McMahon (the owner) into Mr. McMahon (the persona). While his legendary status as an owner was already solidified, that moment turned Mr. McMahon into an instant legend.

Goldberg defeating Hulk Hogan clean on Nitro for the WCW Title.

Hardys versus Edge & Christian in the famous Ladder Match at No Mercy that re-started the entire TLC fad that is continuing today with MITB.

I think a good one is "What about Jericho?" There's the debut on RAW which was absolutely one of the best entrances of all time. There's the WWE Title Win that Never Happened on RAW against Triple H. There's his capturing of the Undisputed Championship, defeating Rock and Austin in the same night, and of course who could forget Jericho vs. Michaels at WM XIX? Hard to choo-choo-choose one.

Bret had two matches at Wrestlemania X. He and Lex Luger tied at Royal Rumble so they were both entitled to a WWF Championship match at Wrestlemania. Bret lost the coin toss and had to wrestle his brother, Owen, to open the card and get his title shot last. Bret lost to Owen, Lex lost to Yokozuna, then Bret beat Yokozuna to close out the show.

Speaking of Owen, I'd say when Owen beat Bret at Wrestlemania 10, it finally got him out of Bret's shadow once and for all, it made him a serious threat in the WWF, and it got him on legend status too. I recall before Owen turned heel, anytime he went out on TV, McMahon would always bring up that he was Bret's brother, but once Owen beat him clean, Owen became his own man.

Even though Jerry Lawler was already over in Memphis, I think the moment he slapped Andy Kaufman on TV, he too became a wrestling legend.

I consider that to be the initiating of Benoit as an in-ring legend. Like Austin's King of the Ring promo. Angle vs. Benoit at RR '03 for the WWE Championship was the point where the WWE realised "we can actually bank on this guy a little," and from there, he became a main eventer.

I hate to say this, but I think Owen Hart became a legend through death. He had so much potential, and was such a great talent that people just ask all these questions. Many call him the "greatest wrestler to have never won a World Title." I think statements like those really define the career of Owen Hart.

As for Chris Jericho, this one is hard, but I think it was his debut. All his popularity really stemmed from there, and to this day, countdowns in wrestling are associated with him. He was never really "built up" in the WWE, and his popularity and character just really took off. Everything just fell into place for the guy, eventually.

I'm hoping that we may not have seen the last of Jericho's defining moments within the business, though.

How about one that hasn't been mentioned yet -- The Rock?

An obvious choice would probably be his first WWF Title win, making him the first African-American to ever hold the title, but what about the IC title feud with HHH that arguably catapulted him to the main event? Or is the WrestleMania X-7 main event the defining moment of his career, since it's the main event of one of the greatest WrestleManias ever?

I'm having a hard time with this one.

I'd say The Rock became a legend after he beat Hulk Hogan. He was already insanely over, and had a movie coming out, but he needed just one little boast, and Hogan gave him that.

Shockmasters debut. Only instance of a single event making any wrestler an instant legend that I can think of.

RR 03 if someone hasnt already said the event.

And I couldnt agree more. It was a kickass match and im sure it made some people within WWE sit up and realise a had hitting technical masterpeice could be appreciated by the masses.

Edit - Noid beat me.

The Rock is a hard one, which is why I didn't mention him. What I consider legendary about The Rock, is just how popular he is. What is the one event that made The Rock one of the most popular wrestlers in professional wrestling history?

I don't think it is one event with The Rock, but moreso just his persona. I was earlier thinking it could also be argued when he re-solidified his heel status, and won his original WWE Title (are those the same events?). I think by doing that, The Rock's personality really started to fly, and he wasn't just a "rising act," but "the act." With this, he got the stage to be the performer that had so many great moments.

Triple H is another hard one, but I think his feud with Mick Foley deserves a mention. However, when he became the first heel to walk out of WrestleMania as WWE Champion, his legacy was solidifed, and his legend began.

I think Owen was pretty over after be beat Bret. If not that, then I think it was Owen breaking Stone Cold's neck that would make him a legend. With that, he has pretty much has a very little connection with Bret. It was all Owen. I know Owen felt horrible about that, but it really put him over big time as a heel.

I honestly think probably the easiest answer would have to be Survivor Series 98 when he was the actual "hand picked" winner for the WWE title when everyone thought it was Mankind, thus started the great stable "The Corporation." Hell The Rock even had his own PPV named after him (Rock Bottom for those that didn't know). Then when Rock left the Corp. the crowd went nuts with every catchphrase and promo he gave.

Plus come on...it's all about The People's Elbow.
