Better Athlete #1
Figured if Movies/TV and Video Game forums now have it, why not the Sports forum?
Kicking things off with two guys who are about to be crowned champions in their respective fields. They are loved as much as they are hated. Here we go... ![]() VS. ![]() Three days. |

Kobe is a top-2 player in his sport. Crosby's a top-2 player on his own team. Much as it pains me to do so, gotta go with Kobe.

Besides that, Crosby is about 20 years old. Hasn't even reached his peak yet. He's just gotten over being a teen. What he's done thus far..incredible. However, how are we judging the better athlete? Because the sports are completely different. |

I think RIGHT NOW though, Kobe is at the peak of his career, and he's arguably been one of the best players in his sport over the past decade. Besides Lebron, is there anybody else you'd rather have on your team right now? Since they are from different sports, I'm trying to take into consideration how high they rank in their individual sport as the barometer for who's "better". ie, NBA, Lebron is #1, Kobe is #2. It's pretty clear cut. In the NHL, Crosby is obvious top 5, but I don't know if I'd pencil him in as #1 or #2 without a second thought. I could be going about the whole process wrong though. I don't know if there's a way to objectively say one's a better athlete than the other. It makes for fun debate, regardless. crossrine |

Actually, I think it's kinda funny, but we're in agreement here, except I feel Kobe is tops in the NBA, better than anybody else, and yes, he is in the prime of his career, thus should probably be given props over Sidney at the moment.
With the NHL it's a bit harder to gauge. Crosby is right up there, but there's a distinction among forwards to defensemen and then to goaltenders. |

Having it be two different sports is what makes this a debate. We all know LeBron is the best basketball player and A-Rod or Pujols are the best baseball players. But who is the more dominant athlete? It would be too easy if it was the same sport.

So the guy that is universally known in the NBA as the best basketball player on the planet, is the #2 in the NBA? Even Lebron says Kobe is the best.
I hate to be "that guy" and sound like a total homer, but Lebron is not better overall than Kobe. Lebron is amazing and he's young. He still has years left to become the best. |

I think LeBron is the better overall player, but I'd rather have Kobe have the last shot. We'll save this debate for another time. Love you, Juan.

Fuck it Triple Naitch, I love the initiave. I like the idea of debating players from different sports too.
And I'm going with Sid the Kid. He's won his first title quicker than Kobe, He's the face of his sport with Ovechkin. He and Ovechkin have a great ebony/ivory rivalry very much like Kobe/LeBron. When I think Better Athlete, I want to go with Sid the Kid, just because he's better right now, and will end up being more dominant in his career winning around 5 or 6 championships to Kobe's 4. That's right, black guys follow Hockey! |

And I want LeBron PERIOD. I will live or die with him taking the last shot. I will live or die with him making the right play at the end of the game, or making the highlight move to win a series. And I will live or die with his puppet!

I don't neccessarily agree with this. I don't think it's so clear cut in any event. Is Lebron undisputably a better athlete than Nash or Wade because he is more physical and "fun to watch"? Is A-Rod a better athlete than Ichiro because he hits for more power? Or for that matter, are either of them a better athlete than someone like Jacoby Ellsbury, or his type, who excel on the base-path and in the field? Is Babe Ruth a better "athlete" than Ozzie Smith? Michael Jordan and Deion Sanders excelled in the sports we instantly think about them playing. In baseball, they weren't stand outs. Baseball is an athletic event. Look at someone like Phil Mickelson, or Vince Wilfork. These guys, on the street, aren't what you would consider to be athletes. They aren't very "athletic." Still, they're professional athletes. Is Shawn Michaels a better athlete than them because he can physically accomplish more athletic feats? From a certain point of view, you could say he's more athletic. Yet, very few (including myself) would class him or the rest as "professional athletes" Tom Brady and Peyton Manning are world class athletes. They're also sort of oafs. A number of factors, even within the sport, come into play. Of course, their dominance is important. So is how prolific they are. But actual athletic ability is a hard thing to come to a complete agreement on. There is skill, and then there is athleticism. Someones ability to shoot from the foul line shows more skill, than the athleticism of running, jumping, etc. Batting is a skill. Pitching is a skill. Stick handling is a skill. Still, I think these fall into athleticism, since they are physical activities that occur on the field of the sport. I guess it begs the whole "define athlete" debate that we see happen in all threads like this. At what point does one draw the line, if at all, between skill and athleticism? How does talent factor into this? What is the value of winning in your sport, and being able to get the job done? I think a mix of all of these factors make up what everyone will personally define as an athlete, and then with those opinions people will rank and compare other athletes to make their pick, even within sport. |

Wait a minute. For a group of people tearing down this thread and series, why didn't you do something first? either add to this debate, or Get The Fuck Out
I am surprised about the lack of love for Sid the Kid. He's already the face of the NHL, regardless of his teammate having such a lights out year. I see them on the ice and I think Jordan/Pippen |
