Any good free virus protection software out there?/Virus protectiong in general..
Got a free desktop, completely wiped out though and has like nothing on it other than the operating system. Was thinking about going out and purchasing some virus protection, but then I saw some that are free online? Not totally sure what I should do here? Any advice would be great...

Yeah, I used to use AVG but switched to Avast and like it better for some reason. I do not remember why exactly, but you should use Avast.

I use AVG. Haven't had any issues with it except I went through a stage where I kept having to delete two .ctr files all the time(cause the automatic updates would stop) and then reload all the updates.

However, that hasn't happened for months now so perhaps it was either an issue at their end that they fixed or whatever the problem at my end that was causing it has stopped.

I have never used Avast. I tried some free trials for Kaspersky and one other (can't remember) and didn't see the value in paying for their 'extra' features that aren't provided free with AVG.

Any 'extra' features I want I get with other software I already have.

I think Free AVG doesn't remove rootkits though. I use a combination of SuperAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes AntiMalware and Spybot - Search & Destroy.

lol I only run them to do a scan maybe once a week. They aren't running constantly in the background.

I use exactly what Jura uses plus CC Cleaner. I also insalled Windows Defender and Windows Malicious Software Removal

I tried CC Cleaner and thought it was pretty good until I tried Tune Up Utilities 2009.

Does much more and detected some stuff missed by CCC.

There are plenty of torrents for TUU. Tip: When installing select "Never Update" as after a month it will detect that it is an illegal copy and you will need to find a new key.

lol what? I have CC Cleaner too but only because it came installed with my custom WinXP black. I use Comodo Firewall instead of Windows Defender though.

The combination of the software I have pretty much gets everything that the other one misses. I tried Avira AntiVir but it kept shutting down my PC every time that I went to scan. I had Avast but I don't remember why I uninstalled it.
