Tombstone on Cena... Did Cole fuck up the call?
I've watched the Tombstone on Cena a few times from last week's RAW, and there's one glaring problem. When it happens, all Cole does is call it "another Madison Square Garden moment" then goes into a spiel about Survivor Series and if Cena can retain after the Tombstone.

My problem with this is that this should be built as something huge. You have the World Champion and WWE Champion in the same ring at the same time and one of them takes the others' finisher. Cole should have been pointing out how important it really was and what it means between the two.

Striker tries to save the call by suggesting it was a message of domination, but it goes no where.

My question is, does this fall on Cole or does it come to Vince wanting them to push Survivor Series and not what should have massive consequences in Kayfabe?

Now, this is the only way to explain it, and even then, someone like JR would have gone out of his way to make it seem more important than just an afterthought, which is how I thought it came off. I think if King had been out there he may have been able to save it because he has more leeway in the way he can call things. The fact that Striker is still relatively new to the spot probably contributed to it, but again, even he tried to save it.

So, am I looking for too much here? I'm not really over reacting, because I know in the end it's not a big deal, it's just something that bothered me when I first saw it with commentary.

Really, I think this topic comes down to the importance of commentary in wrestling and how they've really lost touch with how to push things from the booth.

Lol at Matt Striker, and then Cole just completely ignoring him.

I see what you mean and totally agree with your point, but sadly this is WWE. That Tombstone has probably already been forgotten.

That would have been huge if they built it up properly. I mean, to my knowledge Cena hasn't even acknowledged it yet, which kinda makes it pointless.

Seems exactly like what WWE has been building toward. So even if you agree that they should have promoted it differently (personally, I don't), I don't think it's particularly fair to argue that Cole was the one who "fucked up."

Though as Cole's a pretty lackluster announcer, so I wouldn't hold it being his call above him.

In this instance they are pushing Survivor Series. If they end up doing a program between Taker and Cena and go this far back they can just replace Michael Cole with devastating Tombstone sound effects.

What, exactly, were they building to, though? What was the point of the Tombstone other than to pop the crowd? There wasn't one as far as I can see because, even though I didn't see Survivor Series, MAYBE it was mentioned, but it damn sure didn't affect Cena in the slightest.

From a storyline standpoint in hindsight, there was absolutely no point to the Tombstone. When in reality, there should be SOMETHING to it. Why did Taker Tombstone him? Because he was pissed about the blind tag? Okay... Seems a bit of an overreaction...

They shouldn't do something for the sake of doing it. There should be meaning to it, especially something that big.

I have never much cared for Michael Cole. The only time I really enjoyed his commentary is when he and Jim Ross were partners.

The tombstone pops the crowd there, but it doesn't really do any good to sell "Why did Taker Tombstone Cena?" it leaves an unanswered question right before a PPV when they are just trying to promote that PPV and don't seem to have intentions of having these two meet at this point. Making the question of the Tombstone an issue would shift the focus from the main event. If Taker and Cena meet later down the line, it's very easy to have Cena say "I haven't forgotten about that Tombstone..."

I get what you're saying. Kind of irritating that Cole just associated it to the magic that always happens at MSG. Would have rather he ask the question WHY did Taker just Tombstone Cena, but whatever.

Cole is garbage...the mess ups that he makes aren't even the worst of him. I think there is some tension between Striker and Cole...sarcastic jabs at one another when they commentate.

I don't really pay attention to Raw as it's usually on in the background but I have been annoyed how every 20 seconds Cole is hyping something up other than what happened in the match. I remember this Monday Cena hit a good move and all Cole talked about was the Main Event match or the next ppv. It's really annoying, call the match and hype other shit when nothing is happening in the match; not every move.
