Gameboy Player and E reader question

I just bought these to try them out, mainly for Animal Crossing. I'm not sure what the setup is supposed to be though. It looks like the E-reader plugs right into the Gameboy Player and shouldn't need anything else hooked to it, but when i try to do anything with the Animal Crossing scan cards it just gives me a message about error connecting. ANy one know what the proper setup is on these two. Do i still need a link cable for some reason even though the thing is hooked right into the Gamecube already?

Appreciate any help.
