The segments that people really like on The Jay Leno Show (headlines, Jaywalking) actually have very little to do with Jay Leno. You could do those on any show. Conan's good segments could not be replicated by Jay Leno.

People spend important time standing in line to see the Jay Leno Show only to see their beloved talk show host get brutally slandered.

That was pretty good, I still don't really like Kimmel that much.

Exactly this. Jay Leno's humour comes from his writers. Often, Leno doesn't even deliver the jokes as well as he should, because they probably come from a younger mind with a different sort of comedy styling. Leno botches them pretty bad. Conan, on the other hand, has good synch with his writers, and can often take nothing and make it funny.

Oh, and Kimmel is the man. Leno was completely out-classed there but one of the "second tier" late night performers in the industry. Whoever said "bring Kimmel onto the show" is a fucking idiot and deserves to be fired. Leno was so bewildered he couldn't even gather sympathy from his own audience through it all.
It's ballsy enough that Kimmel did it, but that he managed to crack up most of Leno's own audience as he was slaughtering him is what's really impressive about it. Leno also backed down from Kimmel very quickly, perhaps realising that if he went after Kimmel, he'd be destroyed even worse, and that'd make him look like more of a fool. Kimmel seemed nervous when he talked about appearing on Leno's show prior to it happening, but he handled it more than fine. His "plea" at the end was also very...honest, and made Leno look like a cold-hearted douche. "We have kids. All you have is cars." |
