NEW YORK -- Indiana Pacers draft pick Lance Stephenson, after pushing his girlfriend down a flight of stairs, grabbed her and hit her head on the bottom step, prosecutors said Monday.

A judge released Stephenson, 19, without bail late Sunday night after his arrest on assault, menacing and harassment charges. Prosecutors had asked for $7,500 bail.

Stephenson

In a lengthy statement issued Monday, Pacers president Larry Bird called Stephenson's arrest "very disappointing to the Pacers franchise and to me personally."

Authorities say the confrontation occurred around 5 a.m. Sunday when the woman, Jasmine Williams, was returning home to her apartment building with two friends. Witnesses said Stephenson was waiting for her and yelled, "Are you kidding me?" before pushing her down the stairs.

A criminal complaint provided Monday by the Brooklyn district attorney's office said that as Williams lay at the bottom of the stairs, Stephenson picked up her head and slammed it on the bottom step.

When police arrived, Stephenson told them the woman had fallen down the stairs, prosecutors said. The complaint said Williams suffered head and back wounds and possible damage to her neck.

Stephenson's New York-based attorney, Alberto Ebanks, said Monday his client "did not maliciously, intentionally or in any other way cause harm to Jasmine Williams."

Ebanks, calling the charges against his client "very serious," added: "Everyone, especially Lance, regrets that this incident occurred. We look forward to addressing these charges in the appropriate venues."

Stephenson was one of the nation's top high school prospects. He played one season at Cincinnati before applying for early entry to the NBA draft.

Bird said the organization was still waiting to hear all the facts.

Still, Stephenson "should not have put himself in the position he was in early Sunday morning," the former Boston Celtics great added. "We have consistently emphasized to our players the importance of not putting themselves in situations where bad things can happen."

Depending on the investigation's outcome, Bird said, "we will deal appropriately with Lance so that he, the team and the entire Pacers community understands that this message cannot be ignored."

Way to not coach at all Coach K

Didnt exploit any matchup advantages at all. Kevin Love for Odom would have been great. Billups is non existant and taking bad shots non stop. Maybe put Gordon in. Iguadala sucks in half court play and they arent getting fast breaks. Plus that lineup was fucking exhausted. Seriously, did he just stop coaching?

I think Granger is a secret weapon in Coach K's eyes. He played great yesterday and he's not gunna be on any other teams radar. When this shit gets down to elimination round, USA will not be getting fast breaks. It's going to turn into a half court game and Granger might be the 2nd best player on the team next to Durant when it comes to that.

Also, Granger looks really calm and collected. Like a veteran. Eric Gordon and ( especially ) Steph Curry are starting to look incredibly raw.

RP
09-02-2010, 09:43 AM
Someone needs to pull Coach K aside and tell him this starting lineup is horrible. They dont play good together at all. Iguadala is a turnover machine if he has to play half court offense.

Emperor Smeat
09-03-2010, 12:16 AM
Celtics sign Delonte West after being traded away by the Cavs to Minnesota and then cut from the team last month. Deal is worth the veteran's minimum of $1 million for 1 year with only $854,000 guaranteed.

NBA referees will have more reasons to issue technical fouls next season.

At the referees' annual meeting in Jersey City, N.J., on Thursday, the league announced the guidelines for technical fouls will expand to include "overt" player reactions to referee calls.

Referees have been instructed to call a technical for:

• Players making aggressive gestures, such as air punches, anywhere on the court.

• Demonstrative disagreement, such as when a player incredulously raises his hands, or smacks his own arm to demonstrate how he was fouled.

• Running directly at an official to complain about a call.

• Excessive inquiries about a call, even in a civilized tone.

• Demonstrative disagreement, such as when a player incredulously raises his hands, or smacks his own arm to demonstrate how he was fouled. This is every single player in the NBA. Anytime a player gets fouled there are at least 2 guys on the other team who raise their hands to "show they are innocent." How long until that rule gets abolished

Seeing as some NBA teams and the league itself lost money last year, not surprised at the tighter rules to create new ways to get money from fines.

Going to be interesting to see how strict the refs will be at the star players since Lebron does #3 on that list a lot while Kobe is more of a #1.

Denver Nuggets in heavy trade discussions involving Carmello Anthony with 3 other teams.

Bulls refuse to trade Deng or Noah while Knicks have no one Nuggets want unless it also includes a lot of draft picks (Knicks don't have any).

The proposed deal, as ESPN.com reported earlier Friday, would also involve Utah and Charlotte and is poised to deliver prized Nets rookie Derrick Favors, Jazz veteran Andrei Kirilenko and multiple future first-round picks to Denver in exchange for their franchise player.

Sources told ESPN.com that the deal, which has yet to be finalized, would send former All-Star point guard Devin Harris to Charlotte, with Bobcats forward Boris Diaw moving to Utah. The Bergen Record reported Friday afternoon that the Nets would also receive Bobcats guard D.J. Augustin, with New Jersey's Jarvis Hayes accompanying Harris to Charlotte in a sign-and-trade. Nets swingman Quinton Ross would go to Utah and Denver would get a 1-to-7 protected first-round pick in 2012 that New Jersey received from Golden State.

ESPN starting the mega-hype of Miami Heat for 2011 NBA Finals by unveiling a new "Heat Index" just for the team on their website that will track their progress to the title and have special articles. This goes along with the ESPN special of covering Miami Heat preseason and training. camp coverage on both tv and website.

If ESPN gets their way, NBA going to over-hype and push for a Lakers-Heat final harder than in years past when ESPN hyped up Cavs-Lakers for 3-4 years with the exception of 2008 when they wanted Celtics-Lakers.

Might only have been a preseason game but based on the photos and ESPN's coverage of the game, kind of surprised there was a lot of empty seats at Miami during the Pistons-Heat preseason game. Its the 1st preseason game at home and the debut of the new Big Three in action even if the game itself doesn't count.

ESPN is saying the stadium was packed and almost sold out by tip-off but unless Heat fans decided to randomly leave, seems a bit odd to have a lot of empty seats.

Edit: Looks like the team itself was to blame by charging 3x for parking ($40 compared to $15 normally) and for tickets compared to a normal preseason game.

Pretty funny article on Phil Jackson's dislike for rookies...

Jackson rarely hides his indifference, even disdain, for rookies, famously saying they were all "lower than whale … " earlier in his coaching career.

It didn't sound like he envisioned much playing time in the future for Devin Ebanks or Derrick Caracter despite Ebanks' 14-point, seven-rebound outburst Saturday against Denver.

"It's not that they're the scum of the earth, which they are, it's the simple fact that they make silly mistakes," he said of rookies in general.

"They just don't know the game yet. It really takes experience to know how to eliminate those mistakes that you may avoid when you get some credence in this league."

Ebanks had two points against Utah. Caracter did not play because of back spasms.

Ebanks and Caracter are in charge of collecting all the balls and picking up used beverage bottles after practice, typical chores for NBA rookies, but it could be worse.

"They're not solo. It's really tough if you're all alone," Jackson said. "Sun Yue was alone [in 2008-09]. He got dogged."

Emperor Smeat
10-19-2010, 09:16 PM
Would have been interesting to see how events could have changed had Phil Jackson coached Jordan as a rookie compared to Jordan already being 5-6 years in the league by the time the Bulls changed coaches.

If Wikipedia is correct, Jordan's 1st coach allowed him free reign to develop and create a play style Jordan kept in his entire career.

Emperor Smeat
10-22-2010, 09:23 PM
Indiana is strong in terms of basketball support or at least in college basketball and high school so it would be bad to lose them. Not a big market but similar to Green Bay in the NFL where they are mid-market and can't compete in money and fan numbers but a strong hotbed for a particular sport.

I'd take out the Clippers before Indy since LA has 2 teams and can afford to lose 1.

McLegend
10-22-2010, 09:29 PM
Now there has to be changes to the the NBA. They lose hundred of millions of dollars a year. So it needs to be changed. I think we will see an end to guarnteed contract. Probabably only like 3 or 4 years will be guarnteed. At least that's what I think.

Players salaries probably need to be cut, but I love it how David Stern says that. David Stern makes like 10 million a year. Why can't he cut his salary?

Nah, Wizards are in a big market, teams like Indiana, Sacramento, Memphis in smaller markets who are also failing to attract crowds will be more likely candidates.

Sacramento used to be huge for basketball, so I think its more of a issue with the team thats put out on the floor then anything.

Indiana is safe too...too much basketball tradition.

I would think about losing the Clippers, Warriors, Timberwolves, Grizzlies (I realize all these teams are in the West so its kinda odd) I dont think anyone would be upset at losing any of those franchises (except Ben Maller, huge Clippers fan..poor guy)

I still can't believe that the NBA is starring a lockout in the face just like the NFL. My bet is, should the NFL be shut down next year that the NBA would find a way to avoid it themselves.

Here's the teams I would look at contracting if I were Stern:

New Jersey - not happening since they were just sold

Cleveland - No one wants to watch them play any more anyways.

Charlotte - Even though they won't cause MJ owns part.

Wild card: Toronto - Even thought they give the game "international exposure" they had one good season.

Minnesota - A few good years with Garnett, but Kahn is running them into a huge hole.

New Orleans - Crappy ownership, crappy team. Going to be done for when CP3 leaves anyways.

Memphis - Just awful. Always have been

Wild card: Clippers - No one cares about the Clippers with that other team playing in the same building

They're talking about the Heat/Celtics game being the highest rated sports game ever. I don't know about that, it could be the NBA overhyping it.

No way that will occur since Lakers vs Celtics NBA Finals traditionally draws the huge numbers for NBA.

I could see it potentially be the biggest NBA season opener for numbers but no way be near an NBA Finals, Superbowl, or record breaking game (ex. Giants vs Pats to end 2007 season).

Eleven-time NBA All-Star Allen Iverson has agreed in principle to a two-year, $4 million deal with Turkish side Besiktas, Yahoo! Sports reported Sunday citing sources.

NBA commissioner David Stern has mentioned contraction as a possibility as the league enters economic uncertainty.

Stern didn't single out any franchises, but a Celtics team source told the Boston Globe that small-market cities like Charlotte, Memphis and New Orleans may be in danger of losing their teams.

Sad day for basketball in the Confederacy. :(

Memphis I could see being contracted since it didn't work out well in Vancover and besides the couple of years when the Grizzles were good, it hasn't been any better in Memphis.

Would be shocked at pulling the plug early for the 2nd attempt in Charlotte. To be fair, their fan and revenue numbers are much lower than when they had the Hornets and never got much support from the heavy college basketball hotspot for fans.

Loosing the Hornets would have been big for New Orleans since the Hornets and Saints managed to keep the people happy post-Katrina but the franchise is in a mess right now while the Saints became the big team for the area.

So does this thread close tomorrow? I'm almost afraid to switch over into the new one where SammyG and Wadding will surely get out of control within hours
