I'll grab this when it appears in some sales. Not saying it's not going to amazing, but I don't trust Bethesda to make it playable at launch anymore so I may as well save a few quid and wait.

Feel kind of burnt out on this engine, so unless they do a lot of big improvements, I'll probably bargain bin it at best. Not asking for a total revamp, mind you, I just don't really want to play the same game again.
Fantasy settings have never really been my bag. A fantasy game has to be really good for me to like it. So far the only ones I've played all the way through are the Baldur's Gate/Icewind Dale games, and Dragon Age.
So I guess only Bioware stuff. Cause I'm fairly certain the people in Bioware are many of the same people who did the forgotten realms games. Still need to try out Neverwinter Nights.

Elder Scrolls has never been my bag (mainly because first-person melee combat always felt clunky and awkward), but holy crap, this looks like a truly impressive game. I'm pretty sure I'm going to get this, especially since I'll be using a PC that isn't worthless by the time it comes out.
I'm totally getting this, as long as it doesn't have the lame "monsters scale to your level" thing Oblivion had.
Funky Fly
06-13-2011, 01:03 PM
According to an ign article somewhere, when you enter a dungeon/cave/mine/whatever the monsters are locked to whatever level you are at when you first enter the cave/etc.
Going through Oblivion rn and I don't mind the monster levelling too much. I mean I had to do a ruin which had a big room with 4 Lichs in it. Let me tell you how much it sucks to to get spotted and then jumped by Lichs with different staves: My armour got disintigrated, my strength got destroyed (paralyzing me in the processs) I got zombies all over me and I had my magika damaged almost completely. I came so close to eating it that I was practically dripping with adrenaline. Crazy battle.

Bethesda revealed the contents of the collector's edition with the price being $149.99 for the set.
Here’s a rundown of the Collector’s Edition contents straight from Bethesda:
* Alduin Statue: Created in conjunction with the IP Factory, this collector’s only statue stands 12” tall and is made of high quality PVC. Modeled from actual in-game 3D digital files, it showcases Alduin, the World Eater. He stands perched atop one the game’s many dragon walls that teach the player the lethal language of dragons.
* ‘The Art of Skyrim’ Official Art Book: Featuring over 200 pages of striking, full-color illustrations, sketches and models, this stunning 9 3/8” x 12 1/8” coffee table book showcases the characters, creatures, environments, and weaponry of Skyrim. With a foreword by game director Todd Howard and commentary from Bethesda Game Studios artists, readers will be guided through the game’s iconic visual style.
*‘The Making of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim’ DVD This documentary DVD contains exclusive, behind-the-scenes footage, including interviews with the Bethesda Game Studios team as they take you from concept to creation and provide insights into the story, gameplay, setting, legacy of the Elder Scrolls franchise, and much more.

Also related was how the director for the game feels the gaming industry should be lowering standard game prices to a more friendly $29 range since he feels more people are willing to buy and try out more games than being hesitant at the higher $60 price tag.
Although he ended up being a bit of a hypocrite after rejecting any idea of the Elder Scrolls series or Skyrim being lowered to his ideal price range.

New stuff and info shown during QuakeCon reveals there will not be any spell making possible for Mages, better pickpocketing and abilities for Thieves, and more depth and variety for in-game characters and options.
Pete Hines, VP of PR for Bethesda, confirmed that Mages can no longer craft their own spells
"There isn't spell making. I thought we'd said that, or someone else had in a preview."
- Joinable Factions: Rebels with branching path quests (Stormcloaks) and Riverwood Tavern Warrior Clan.
- Pickpocket skill provides greater RP opportunities and much more realistic thievery for thieves.
- Myriad options for face-paint.
- Even minor NPCs have much more complexity and depth compared with Oblivion.
- Character Generation remembers your settings when switching between races
- You can persuade various random NPCs to accompany you and they feel like fleshed out, interesting companions.
- There are six different stages to crafting items. The first two are: Refining crude ore and Assembling materials.
- More realistic alchemy labs.
- In addition to alchemy ingredients there are also reagents.
- Some spells can be learned by reading spell tomes, while others can be bought from merchants.
- Hand to Hand attacks have a much improved gravity and physicality.
- There are more ways to complete quests.
- Lockpicking mini-game is improved.
- There are bards in the game.
- You can choose not to spend perk points each level, and hold onto them instead.
- During Character Generation you can add laugh lines to your character.
- There are dozens of sliders for character creation.
- Aurora Borealis is confirmed.
- You can have animal companions.
- Bosmer "Animal Allies" Racial Ability confirmed.
- NPCs can throw rocks if they are on a bridge above you
- Glow Worms confirmed.
- Killable Bees and insects confirmed (you can harvest bees from beehives).
- Fast Travel costs money.
- Perks do not stop at level 50.
- There are more types of poison.
- Bosmer are immune to most types of poison.

Requiem
08-15-2011, 07:34 PM
Nah, gives a better sense of scale to the world if you can't just fast travel all the time. Especially if they give you plenty of content to explore in the world itself. They probably want people to come across more content all the time, because when you fast travel everywhere you start to rely on it and it takes you out of the world too much.
Requiem
08-15-2011, 07:36 PM
They didn't take it out cause obviously forcing people to run EVERYWHERE would probably piss off a lot of people. But making it harder keeps people actually in the world, and judging by how much content they've bragged about so far, they probably want people to actually experience it all.
D Mac
08-16-2011, 01:10 AM
They should leave that up to the player. The average person that drops 60 bucks on this will want to explore the world regardless. Makes no sense to buy it and just do the main quest and nothing else.

Yeah, agree with D Mac here. I tried playing as a vampire in Oblivion, which means fast travel = pain and i got so bored of walking/horsing everywhere.
Requiem
08-16-2011, 02:37 PM
Don't think the world of Oblivion will even compare to this one though (hopefully). They are touting so much 'random world content' that I feel you would miss a ton of it if you fast traveled everywhere. Found myself abusing the fuck out of Oblivion's fast travel because there just wasn't enough unique stuff in the world to make me care about finding it.
It's still there. You just have to pay to use it. In other words, the longer you play the game, the more frequently you'll be able to use fast travel. I'm sure toward the end of the game, when you've already ran from A to B and E to F so many times, you'll have the money to be able to fast travel there like it's no big deal.
Funky Fly
08-18-2011, 11:44 AM
I can see that being the case. I actually kinda like Fable 2's fast travel system where you know exactly how much time goes by when travelling from point A to B and that in game activity (mostly involving NPCs) has progressed accordingly. Oblivion has time progression, but it only basically affects what time of day it is when you get there based on distance travelled.

Bethesda announces all the DLC for consoles will be exclusive to the Xbox 360 for the first 30 days before also going to the PS3. Microsoft was willing to pay while Sony refused so Bethesda gave the exclusivity in return.
http://screwattack.com/blogs/ScrewAttack-News/30-days-of-Xbox-360-exclusivity-for-Skyrim-DLC
Also revealed is a brand new system to help combat bugs and glitches that have been a well-known issue for game engines created by the studio.
With Skyrim, Bethesda will adopt a special direct connection to their game—on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360—that will let them update the game on the fly, similarly to how EA is able to tweak the rosters of their sports games without going through the standard multi-day or multi-week waits to update most games on consoles. They are also running new and better processes to catch bugs before the game launches.
They are also adopting this new EA Sports-style "live update" system that will let Bethesda tweak the data in their game almost immediately. If a quest isn't triggering because players are doing some unforeseen combination of actions, that might be addressable by tweaking the data tables that dictate the flow of events in the game. If the game is proving to be unbalanced in an unexpected way, that can be fixed on the fly too. And these fixes—Howard prefers to call them "improvements"— will take effect fast. "We can change stats on a sword and it will be available to everyone in a few hours," he said.

Really have no complaints about what I've seen from this game so far. It looks like they really spent a lot of time on it. Would have been 'meh whatever' had they done nothing to the engine, but it looks beautiful IMO. I'm sure it could be better, given what technology has proven it can do already, but I think they did what they could while still hand-crafting the world and giving it a level of detail you don't often see. Looks like a truly 'epic' game that will live on for years after it's released.

I lost all my special level rewards (Night Mother's Blessing, etc) and abilities (I was either very or completely resistant to pretty much everything except normal damage), effectively making my juggernaut of a health stealing battlemage into a kinda sorta bad ass warrior type with some nifty fireballs and invisibility tricks. I am so not impressed. I sunk 300 hours into this shit and the game is just less fun now. I'm making my way through the main story pretty quick, but I'm just not enjoying it since all that levelling was so I could just be a mega bad ass through the main plot.

OUCH. games this size are going to have countless bugs, no real way to test em all out. My first OB playthrough i i actually made a new save nearly everytime i saved in case of some game breaking bug...

I have about 30 saves on Oblivion, never ever just have one.
A lot of the bugs came from that shitty engine though. They've built this new one from the ground up, I'll accept a couple of bugs, but they can't have the game-breaking ones of Oblivion/Fallout.

Yeah, I got 2 gates left before the big siege of Bruma and I'm currently grabbing the great welkynd stone. And I got ANOTHER GLITCH in the form of the very last daedra shrine, the one you get summoned to. I need to trap one soul from each race. I got the first 8 no problem. The last 2 don't register. I've tried everything. Fucking hell.

Install Size for Xbox 360 version will only be 3.8 GB while the PC version will only require 6 GB.
No news on how big the mandatory and optional install sizes will be for the PS3 but its safe to assume at least 3.8 GB for either one.

Huh. I would have expected around 7gb or so. I really hope they fix the game freezing while it takes time for "loading area..." before letting you resume the game.

Thought I'd keep this under spoiler tags for those who don't want anything revealed for them without playing the game themselves.
Not much to highlight, just one minor detail that doesn't seem to have been discussed in here yet.
Companions (Fighters' Guild), Thieves' Guild, Dark Brotherhood and College of Winterhold (Mages' Guild) being the 4 major guilds every "hardcore/diehard" player of ES III: Morrowind or ES IV: Oblivion knows existed in previous games, will be returning.

While the game has gone "gold", it appears the console versions of the game have a lot of graphical problems confirmed on the Xbox 360 and assumed to be the same on the PS3.
The game will also have a "Day 1" patch for the consoles to help fix up some stability and "quest progression" issues but doesn't fix the graphical glitches the console versions appear to have.
PC version doesn't seem to have any big reported problems besides some minor bugs which will get fixed in the "Day 1" patch.

While creating games can be a long, grueling process, the humorous bugs that tend to pop up here and there can be little lights in the darkness of development. Rivaling the hilarity of Bungie’s “pimp brute” glitch, the folks at Bethesda recently had to fix a glitch in Skyrim that was causing chickens to report crimes to the town guards. I can only imagine the reaction to this discovery. It must have been one of the few times someone has uttered the phrase, “Oh! It was the chickens! Of course!” Many fans of the game have begun petitioning to have the “feature” implemented back into the game. Maybe the PC version will get a simple console command.

Preparing for a new Elder Scrolls game is like preparing to die. One must ensure they get all their worldly affairs in order, speak with the people who mean everything to them, and have a final meal. After all, once that disc goes in, the user may as well have departed from our mortal world.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is a game that will murder you, for the time it steals from your life could rightfully be considered criminal. It is a game that will literally never end while simultaneously bringing you closer to your own end.
This is all before the dragons show up.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 [reviewed], PC)
Developer: Bethesda Softworks
Publisher: Bethesda Game Studios
Released: November 11, 2011
MSRP: $59.99
The mountains of Skyrim are beautiful to behold, truly breathtaking in scale and bursting at the seams with things to see and do. Not all is well in the shadow of the snow-capped rocks, however. It has been two centuries since the Oblivion Crisis changed Tamriel forever, but the resulting peace couldn't last for eternity. Cyrodiil's expansive Empire has laid claim to Skyrim and abolished the traditional customs of its people, the Nords. An inauspicious threat of civil war hangs over the people as rebellious Stormcloaks plot to drive Imperial forces from the region and gain popular favor amongst the local Nordic Jarls. Though common folk strive to keep to themselves, events have taken their toll on every citizen.
Inevitably, it is the player's destiny to become deeply embroiled in these events, as well as many more. Yet again, The Elder Scrolls casts its adventurers into the role of a mysterious prisoner, this time due for the chopping block. However, a stay of execution is granted by the sudden appearance of apocalyptic dragons -- once thought to be creatures of mere legend. The first of these scaly monstrosities is but one of an army, as the mythical creatures reawaken all over Skyrim, and the player -- soon to realize his destiny as a dragon-slaying Dovahkiin (Dragonborn) -- must confront the beasts and save the world.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim takes two hours to beat. That is, if you consider wrapping up the official story quest as "beating" an Elder Scrolls game. Nobody should, however, for the main plot is but a mere morsel of what Skyrim has to offer, to the point where it isn't even the most sprawling and epic quest on the menu. To focus only on the main narrative would be to ignore the deliciously macabre Dark Brotherhood resurrection, the various twisted meetings with capricious Daedric Princes, or the vengeful tale of The Companions and their grim secret.

Bethesda's games have always felt like online encyclopedia browsing, where one opens a page, finds more interesting ones within, and ends up with twenty unread articles open before long. In Skyrim, this approach is taken to extremes, with opportunities for adventure found in every city, cave, farm and forest hideout. Thanks to the "Radiant" storytelling system, these adventures can be procedurally generated as well. While there are fully scripted quests boasting their own characters and narrative threads, there is an infinite amount of miscellaneous objectives that can appear at any point. These range from simple tasks (such as collecting a bounty note in a tavern and slaying the target) to more intricate missions (like pulling off a successful burglary for the Thieves Guild). The game is also smart enough to place objective locations in unexplored areas of the gargantuan map, improvising in order to encourage further exploration.
At the time of writing, I have put over fifty hours into the game, and my journal menu still lists more than forty unfinished jobs. These are just the tasks I've found, and I doubt I've scratched the surface as I am willing to bet there are many finely layered quests that I still have not stumbled across.
Of course, all this content would be meaningless if the game itself were no fun, but Skyrim is perhaps the most encouraging, rewarding and downright indulging Western role-playing game I have ever played. That sounds hyperbolic, and perhaps it is, but it's something I truly feel in my bones. With Skyrim, Bethesda has taken everything successful from previous Elder Scrolls games and mixed it with the best elements of recent Fallout installments, all while leaving behind the chaff. The result is a game as deep and flexible as Oblivion but as accessible and intuitive as Fallout 3. More importantly, it's better than both.
http://bulk.destructoid.com/ul/215507-review-the-elder-scrolls-v-skyrim/03-620x.jpg
Before our budding hero can embark on his or her quest, one must first work out if it's a he or a she. The in-depth character creator from Oblivion is back, offering a wealth of options to spawn warriors as handsome or ugly as desired. Every race has been given a significant visual overhaul, with Orcs looking tougher, Elves gaining harsher features, and humans receiving far more believable, subtle faces. Tamriel's exotic races -- the Khajiit and Argonians -- have benefited the most from Skyrim's fresh visuals, earning richly detailed animalistic features that cause them to look less like vaguely re-skinned humans. Each race possesses a predetermined aptitude for certain talents alongside unique special abilities (Argonians once again breathe underwater while Imperials can access the calming "Voice of the Emperor" power), but every race will be able to make use of whatever skills the player ends up choosing.
Skyrim gives starting players all the tools they need to test every type of hero they could potentially become. Armed with rudimentary stealth, weaponry and alchemy skills, as well as a few weak spells, one's fresh-faced avatar serves as a fertile testing ground that can be specialized in many directions to suit the needs of every individual. As with previous Elder Scrolls games, there is no traditional experience system. Instead, skills gain levels with repeated use, and contribute toward a rank meter that determines the player's overall level. This creates a natural progression in which characters evolve based entirely on how one wants to enjoy the game. If a player tends to sneak around a lot, the character will become increasingly stealthy. If the player likes to swing two-handed axes around, the character becomes more proficient at wielding heavy melee equipment. The only stats you'll have to worry about are Health, Magicka and Stamina, one of which can be upgraded with each successful level gain.
Every time a level is earned, a skill point is also awarded. Skill points are invested into various perks arranged on individual skill trees. There are trees for each school of magic, as well as light armor, heavy armor, sneaking, lock-picking, alchemy and other familiar Elder Scrolls abilities. As players become more experienced in various skills, new paths on the tree will unlock, allowing points to be sunk into ever more useful abilities. For example, the Speechcraft skill tree has perks that make it easier to intimidate people in conversations, or cause items to be sold at cheaper prices in stores. Heavy Armor has perks that grant additional defense bonuses if the character is wearing a matching set of armor pieces, while spell perks can reduce Magicka costs or even dual-cast incantations to make them stronger. Although these perks aren't quite as obvious and game-changing as those found in Fallout, they are nonetheless crucial in creating a powerful Dovahkiin.
http://bulk.destructoid.com/ul/215507-review-the-elder-scrolls-v-skyrim/08-620x.jpg
The natural way in which characters are built ensures a huge variety of potential warriors. My own character is a battlemage who specializes in Conjuration and Destruction magic, backing up his spellcasting with a measure of sword-wielding experience. Sword in one hand, magic spell readied in the other, I'm able to summon a daemon from the Oblivion plane and send it to charge ahead while I throw fireballs and soften up the target. Once the enemy is weak enough, I can charge in and finish it off with the sword -- which can often be accompanied by a brutal execution animation. What's great about my character is how I was able to incrementally tweak it to maximize strengths and limit weaknesses. For example, my hero was a bit of a glass cannon at first: able to dish out punishment but prone to getting slaughtered if enemies could close in. I therefore spent some time focusing on Heavy Armor, using just enough skill points to give me a defensive edge. Now I have a character that feels like a battle tank. He's slow and and has very poor stamina (you can't have everything), but he will soak up plenty of damage while devastating all but the hardiest of foes.
This is just one potential build of many. I could have had a lightning-quick scout, or a character with Illusion magic that renders him invisible and causes enemies to furiously attack one another. The possibilities aren't endless, but they may as well be. Furthermore, dedicated players who reach the pinnacle of their talents will enjoy power equal to a demigod. By the time the character is sufficiently leveled, there's no reason not to feel on top of the world and downright almighty. That isn't to say the game becomes a complete cakewalk -- tougher enemies will rise to the challenge -- but players aren't punished for leveling up, as often felt like the case in Oblivion.
Another change from Oblivion is the in-game menu. The menu screen features crossroad-style navigation that points to skill trees, available magic, items and the map. Simply moving in the right direction fluidly opens up the corresponding menu, allowing for easy and swift access. Unlike the clutter seen in previous Elder Scrolls interfaces, these screens are clear and clean, sacrificing pompous stylishness for pure functionality. The item menu is particularly cool, with each item fully viewable in 3D within the screen -- you can even zoom in and rotate anything in the inventory, which comes in handy for a few quests.
http://bulk.destructoid.com/ul/215507-review-the-elder-scrolls-v-skyrim/04-620x.jpg
Combat is dramatically improved. Magic spells are similar to the Plasmids found in BioShock, equipped to one of the Dovahkiin's hands and readied for use whenever weapons are drawn. Players can choose to have a sword in one hand with a spell in the other, or even have two spells at once. Some spells issue a constant spray of damage, while others are projectile-based; some have instant effects, and others take a moment to charge up. As with everything in Skyrim, flexibility is the essence of the experience, and players can tailor their combat to suit any preference. A large number of "Favorites" can also be mapped to a special menu that's brought up at the touch of a button, allowing heroes to change weapons and spells and use potions on the fly.
For those not magically inclined, there's a huge variety of weapons with which to dispense death. One-handed and two-handed melee weapons are joined by bows and staffs to create a healthy and versatile arsenal. Although combat retains the unwieldy hack-n'-slash flavor of prior games, things are slightly more refined, with blocking and counter-attacking given a greater focus. Fights feel so much more involved than they did in previous Elder Scrolls games, especially since every blow feels like it connects with a mighty impact. Those looking for intricate and graceful melee will be disappointed, but those who want brutal, manic, in-your-face engagements have come to the right game.
What else is there to say? What about the crafting, smithing and enchanting? You can make your own weapons with materials found around the world, becoming an alchemist and create new potions, or imbue weapons with powerful sorcery. These systems are simple, yet require practice and dedication from those players looking to make their own gear. Even then, they don't have to if they don't want to, and can rely on shops when they get new stock. It's all up to you.
As a Dragonborn, the hero will gain access to Thu'ums, or Shouts. These shouts are spoken in the language of dragons, and their words invoke powerful effects. As players discover Thu'ums written on walls around Skyrim, they absorb their power and gain new skills. These range from simple Shouts that blast out fire or ice to more unique skills, such as surging forward at super speed or summoning a lightning storm. Once learned, a Shout needs to be unlocked with a Dragon Soul, but to win a Dragon Soul, one needs to fight a dragon.
http://bulk.destructoid.com/ul/215507-review-the-elder-scrolls-v-skyrim/07-620x.jpg
Dragons are not merely scripted boss battles that have been set to occur at a few predetermined points. In Skyrim, these living legends can come at any time and launch an attack upon any location. These randomly generated creatures will start appearing in the world once a certain point in the main story has been reached, and their regular appearances dominate everything. The best time to meet a dragon is undoubtedly in a city, as guards will leave their posts to join in the fight and turn what is already a huge encounter into something truly epic.
The winged lizards swoop across the sky, raining down fire or frost on everything in their wake. They'll land on buildings, smash into the ground and provide truly memorable battles every time they show up. As a choral rendition of the Elder Scrolls theme strikes up and players struggle valiantly to bring their reptilian foe to the ground, only a heart of stone could fail to be roused. Once the dragon finally draws its last breath and begins to burn away, leaving behind only its huge skeleton, most players would be hard-pressed to not just stand there silently for a few moments, taking in everything that just happened. The surrounding NPCs will be doing the same thing, too, making these reflectively calm moments almost as engaging as the fights themselves.
Skyrim can do epic, that's a given. It is, however, the little things that make The Elder Scrolls V what it is. The game is stuffed to its brim with tiny flourishes that seem so insignificant yet make the world of difference between a game that feels like a game, and a game that feels like it's alive. Swimming in a river to catch some fish, dropping an unwanted item on the floor and having an NPC "helpfully" return it to you, gaining a trusty follower who comments on your actions and surrounding locations -- these are the things that really place Skyrim a cut above the rest. Long after gamers have stopped recounting grand scrimmages against tribes of giants, talk will persist of that time an elf tried to sell a player some drugs outside of town, or the bandits that attempted to scare the hero away rather than blindly attack. To talk of such tiny details in a game where storm clouds can be summoned at will sounds silly, but without these minor touches, the overall ambitious scale would mean much less.
http://bulk.destructoid.com/ul/215507-review-the-elder-scrolls-v-skyrim/06-620x.jpg
Providing the backbone for all this content is a brand-new iteration of the Gamebryo Engine, dubbed Creation. The difference this makes is huge, permeating every facet of the experience from graphics to glitches. Skyrim's huge open world looks inspiring: cities and caves appear to be unique, while character models are detailed and finally resemble human beings -- or their Orc/Elf/Khajiit/Argonian equivalent.
The game's lavish sound design seals the deal and adds that final breath of life to the production. Voice acting is fairly varied as far as Bethesda games go, though certain ones are reused a lot. Still, the acting is commendable and the affected Scandinavian accents used by many of the local Nords is quite endearing. The music is absolutely sublime -- quiet and atmospheric when it needs to be, but stirringly evocative at just the right moment.
As far as bugs go, some are bound to exist in a world so large, but I am yet to find anything game-breaking. The only persisting issue is with NPC allies, who can sometimes get lost and fail to return to their default locations. Some will get stuck attempting to perform an action, and if the player doesn't notice they're missing, they could be lost forever in the sprawling world. Other potential allies will still recognize the player as having someone with them, meaning lost comrades won't be replaced until a quest calls for a specific follower, automatically dismissing the lost one (though he/she will still remain lost). I've also had the game freeze once or twice, but one can never be sure if that's a fault of the game or the console trying to run it. Compared to previous games, however, bugs are essentially negligible, and while I'm sure the coming months will find plenty of problems, I can notice nothing so far that ruins what is an absolutely captivating experience.
http://bulk.destructoid.com/ul/215507-review-the-elder-scrolls-v-skyrim/05-620x.jpg
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is every single reason to love a Western role-playing game, condensed into a single comprehensive experience with nothing lost in the conversion process. It is a game that will drown those who step into its absorbing, overwhelmingly detailed world, a game that will bury you and refuse to let go. Yet your submergence will be agreeable, your burial ecstatic, and the hands placed around your throat welcomed like those of a lover's. To play Skyrim is to enter into a relationship, one that provides feelings of empowerment, yet demands total submission.
Submit you will, for The Elder Scrolls V is the new zenith of role-playing games and it commands you to look up.

The Perks are cool, so you can really spec your guy out differently
First character I went Nord, and am making him a two handed warrior and Im working in some bow use.
My one gripe is that in ES4 you could equip one spell at all times and use the cast button. In this one it has to be equiped to a hand so it makes it harder to like heal on the fly, or even swap out a spell for occasional use.

Nah, this probably WILL get game of the year. Only played a couple hours so far but considering the improvements over Oblivion, it will likely be game of the year. I've heard 'complaints' about the graphics, but I find them to be excellent considering the amount of effort put into the game as a whole. Feel that combat could be a bit more 'solid', but it is not enough to tarnish the experience or not be fun. So I don't see any reason that this won't be game of the year.
Ok, actually.. I think it WILL be game of the year, but that Dark Souls is going to get some attention and possibly be a sleeper hit when it comes to awards.

I actually purchased it on PC. Was just planning on pirating it but the one I downloaded didn't work right and I didn't feel like messing with it, so I weighed the pros and cons and decided that this was probably a game that was "worth" the $60, and bit the bullet and got it off Steam. Looks pretty fantastic on PC tbh. Probably not as good as it 'could' be, but I don't care. With 200-300 hours of gameplay, it looks good enough that I won't get tired of looking at it so I'm not worried.

Requiem

Got it on Steam, but I am pretty sure I can mod it.
I modded the UI of my TF2 without issues. Think you just have to tell steam not to check the files of the game when you start up so that it doesn't try redownloading things that aren't there or are replaced by something else. I know people have Half-life 2 mods out the ass, and that is Valve's own game that requires Steam.

Yeah, mods on Steam games are fine. My Oblivion is modded out the arse. Plus it uses Steamworks so every version purchased anywhere is on Steam so any mods will have to work with it. It's as easy as clicking Data Files on the initial splash screen and ticking the mods you want when they're downloaded.
It's Games For Windows Live you gotta watch out for on that, the hoop jumping to mod GTA 4 is insane.

Bethesda confirms the Xbox 360 version does have texture streaming problems and it is related to installing the game on the hard-drive. Apparently the game has problems replacing or showing the better textures loaded from the HDD instead of the default/low-res ones on the disc.
The current solution is to not install the game but the loading times will be longer until Bethesda gets a patch to fix the issue.
People had some doubts about the graphical quality when it was originally shown to be just 3.8GB in size when the PC needed 6GB for an install and it turns out they were right.

I think Google has been trying to make China less "blocky" for a while now.
I think this is a fine game and all, but what makes this game of the year? It's been a pretty good year so far with games like Uncharted 3, Arkham City, Portal 2, Forza 4, Battlefield 3, LBP 2, Resistance 3, Infamous 2, MW3, Dark Souls, Witcher 2, Crysis 2, Deus Ex: HR, Dead Space 2, Gears of War 3, and I hear that new Zelda: Skyward Sword is pretty good too.
Not that this can't be but seems like people are quick to hand the title out in what I consider heavy competition. Most notably Uncharted 3 and the new Zelda.
Just wondering. :)

Question for everyone. I assume everyone has found giants and knows to stay away from them.
I decided to try and fuck with them at level 5 or so. I start attacking the giant, then he hits me with the hammer and I die, which is understandable. The instant I die though, my body launches like a rocket into the air and keeps going up until the loading screen pops up.
Has anyone else seen this, and does anybody find this as hilarious as I do?

Combat, I find, is actually a lot better in third person. When fighting something like a troll, they're obviously really powerful. When you're a lower level you have to jump in and then jump back out, and it's just a lot easier to judge when to jump in when you're in third person.

Not really a huge spoiler as it's at the VERY beginning of the game when you're doing the brief movement tutorial. Didn't even realize depending who you go with at the beginning of the game (Imperial Guard or Stormcloak guy), it gives you a different quest at the beginning and you kill the other guy. I made a 2nd character, and the first time I played I didn't even realize there was a different guy. But I went with the guard this time and instead of telling me to go join the Stormcloak rebellion, he wanted me to go join the Imperials.

Apparently the PS3 version also has frame rate and saving issues but this time its related to once the save file reaches around 5-6 MB in size.
Besides similar graphical glitches like the Xbox 360 version, the PS3 version is reported to have "lag" issues with the frame rates and problems saving.

I have the ps3 version and a little bit of lag does crop up every now and then but it isn't that bad. I haven't had it cause me to die yet, anyways.
My only gripe with the game so far is that it seems stealth based characters are in for a rude awakening, at least in the early hours of the game. It's very difficult to hide efficiently until you pump the skill up a good bit, especially once you realize that you kinda need to wear heavy armor at first so you don't get flaming ass-raped by stronger enemies. Not that it helps, because I still get maimed constantly if I am noticed. Finally got the muffled armor perk and the damage boosting stealth perks though so I am slowly getting to where I just sneak attack everything fine.

The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind came out on XBOX back in June 2002, but a lot of people were turned off by the fact that eventually after so much playing and wear and tear on the disc, it would cause the game's save file(s) to eventually become corrupt and you had no way of continuing, even with a disc in better shape. Mad annoying.
Morrowind was fantastic.
Especially the G.O.T.Y. version, which includes 2 expansions, Bloodmoon and Tribunal. In Bloodmoon, you can travel to a far-off land to the northwest of Vvardenfell and eventually the Daedra Lord Hircine makes you a participant in his hunt, and winning the hunt makes you his "champion" and completes the main quest.
In Tribunal, you travel to a land south of Vvardenfell called Mournhold, where it's up to you to unravel a nefarious plot by Almalexia to take absolute control of everything in her wake. Eventually you have to destroy the Heart of Lorkhan, as it wasn't destroyed as originally alluded to in the end of Morrowind's own main quest. Doing this kills Almalexia, thereby killing the Almsivi Tribunal that started the whole mess, and the prophecies foretold of what the Nerevarine would do are concluded.
They are both worthy additions to the TES III: Morrowind experience. On one last side note, my absolute favorite quest in any of the games to date has to be "A Star Is Born" from the Tribunal expansion. One of the actors in a play, The Horrors of Castle Xyr, has fallen ill at the last hour and the playwright asks if you'd step in. Agree and he hands you the script, which anyone who knows from playing knows, READ THE ENTIRE SCRIPT AND MEMORIZE IT! That's because when you tell him you're ready to go on with the play, you are paid based on your performance. Eventually you come to one of your lines in the script: As I hear, all are Telvanni., and according to the script (Note from the playwright: this line should be delivered without sarcasm. Trust the audience to laugh -- it never fails, regardless of the politics of the locals.); however in an ironic (and hilarious) turn of events, an assassin from the crowd attacks you and the actress. Fend him off and kill him, and then see the playwright for your reward based on your performance, and he tells you to take your gold and rest, far away from there, as everyone has by then had a very long evening.

There is a slight upside to that, though. If you're patient enough to not spend a lot or at all for a while, if you build up 100,000 gold on your person all at once, you get an achievement.
Also, found out who the voice actor is for "Nazir", the side quest giver in the Dark Brotherhood. I knew it was the same guy who voiced Three Dog (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erik_Dellums) in Fallout 3.

I know. Felt like I had to save every other second just to keep it from crashing. According to UESP it happens because
Haven't been saving for too long
Symptom: The player just wanders about and suddenly, Morrowind crashes without any reason.
Sometimes, Morrowind simply crashes when you haven't saved your current game for a while. This is caused by a bug in the data sorting algorithms of the engine; the buffers simply overflow and empty, the engine tries to access data that is gone --- et voilà.
Fix: There seems to be no way to avoid this. Except saving regularly.
Yet they never released a patch or anything for it which REALLY pissed me off. Still a great game if you're patient enough and careful enough to save quite often.

I know. Can't believe I've done everything I have in 10 days, and they weren't lying when they said the first 50 levels you earn come quickly. I'm already a lvl. 37 with my Imperial character.

I don't think that even matters, since it takes place 200 years after Oblivion.

Someone managed to do a little digging to see what was hidden in the Skyrim disc and apparently some areas that were in Morrrowind and Cyrodiiil were discovered locked away.
It wasn't just a quick template or placeholder but ended up being a complete low-res version of Morrowind’s Solstheim and Vvardfell areas along with the Imperial City in Cyrodiil.
A few websites are thinking either these areas will become future DLC quests or expansion-like packs.

This 3rd person view, can it be all the time or just at certain points during the game?

Toggle it on or off as you please. I prefer to only use it for combat, as grabbing items gets tricky with the 3rd person view

It's one of the worst quests in the game.

You can do what you like after it. In fact, after I finished it I still had 20 quests and 50 misc tasks to complete and most of those misc ones will become actual quests in themselves.
It's not a bad thing the main quest being underwhelming.
