Gabbert is starting tonight in New England. Not to sure how to feel about this. Hope he does well considering McCown and Bouman are the back ups. I seriously don't see Bouman making the team, especially since we've cut him 3 times over the last 4 years already.

BTW, what's the feel with the Cowboys amongst their fans?

I haven't really been paying attention to be honest with you. They're playing musical chairs with the offensive line, although a lot of people think that the draft fixed many of those problems. Many people think that Sean Lee, the draft pick from last year, will be a star at linebacker.

All of the players they got rid of were superfluous. They're a bit thin at wide receiver, but I don't really think that matters in the NFL really. Same thing with running back, although I think they have enough there to be productive. The coach they have is really good, and Tony Romo will probably be up to standards, so you're looking at a pretty good team this year I think. They will certainly be better than last year.

New rule - all scoring plays will have replays initiated by the booth and not the coach so no challenges will have to be used on plays that are called a Touchdown (though if its ruled not a touchdown but the coach thinks it was they will have to use it). My guess is this will mean that a lot of the marginally close calls in the endzone will be ruled touchdowns and left to replay to confirm or not.

And the secondary is real suspect. They didn't add anybody.. Elam, a solid tackler but thats about it.

I hope Victor Butler gets more playing time, he seems to make plays every time he's out there.

<font color=goldenrod>Love that there was a kickoff return for a touchdown last night despite kickoffs being moved 5 yards in.

Dumb rule. Limiting the blocking/formations on those plays is fine, but moving it 5 yards in solely to try and cause more touchbacks sucks. I don't care if there are injuries - it's one of the most exciting plays of the game.</font>

I dont mind them changing Kickoff rules for safety. So many injuries. Its the only part of the game where you have massive men with 50 yard head starts barreling into someone trying to block them.

Ever since the Kevin everett game I have agreed. I dont like moving the kick spot though.

The game is evolving, time for Special teams to. Been the same about 25-30 years with no changes until recently.

Lee Evans is apparently on the block as the bills have a ton of young WRs ready to break out.

Im ok with trading him, but it sounds like they arent going to get much in return, which I dont get. if you want to deal from a strength to make your team better, cool, but if you dont get ernough in return for a starter, you are just making holes.

I like Lee. Classy guy. Hope they dont trade him. But Joker Johnson is the clear number 1 now, and Lee cant run any routes except "GO DEEP AND AN 80 YARD BOMB IS COMING"

Giants are said to be interested in Evans, not sure what to make of it. He'd give them a legit deep threat - but he's owed $5 million each of the next two years. Giants may be in cap hell again next year with all the restructuring they did.

But I would like to get a vet in there, since at this point the most experienced WR likely to make the 53 man roster is Domenik Hixon.

Hanso Amore

Evans to Baltimore for a 4th...Ugh, wanted more.

as long as Boldin is there doing everything else, Lee can just run fly routes all day. Good fit for him.

According to ESPN, Pats QB Brian Hoyer is the new "Kevin Kolb" which means some team is going to be fooled in giving up a lot to get him.

Unlike Cassel, Hoyer doesn't have nearly the experience nor stats while at least Kolb started a few games and was a legit contender for #1 QB with the Eagles last year.

He isn't a bad player but sort of crazy to give him the "Kolb" tag considering he's only appeared in 10 games with the 1/2 game against Tennessee the most he's ever played (not counting preseason).

lol maybe in 2013..but not this year. Boldin is ok, but hes not that speed/deep threat.

Funny it was pointed out that the only reason the Ravens passed on every other WR was apparently because GM Ozzie Newsome was infatuated with Evans after the Ravens/Bills game last year where he caught 10 passes for 100 yards and 3 TDs which was pretty much his only production for the Bills last year.

Hanso Amore
08-12-2011, 09:19 PM
Yeah, Evans is a one dimensional player at this point and has lost a step, but he should be a nice weapon on a contender. I wouldnt expect much in the way of production at a high level, but I think his value comes in having to plan against him. He should open up the middle a bit for boldin.

NFL postponed the Supplemental Draft on the day before it was supposed to occur just for Terrelle Pryor so that instead of him missing this season, he can get more time to be legally declared ineligible by Ohio State and the NCAA while also having at least 1 personal practice for scouts.

Normally the NFL doesn't postpone the SD for just 1 player but they did it for Pryor while the other potential draftees didn't know it was cancelled until after the announcement.

I think he is going to be a good NFL backup, maybe starter (was a huge fan of his on college) but man, I still think it is so funny the shit rookies do in their first action. Even then, the media would put a negative spin on it as per usual. We all know he's not in Brady's class, very few are.

I'd put Eli in the Top 10, somewhere near the bottom. A lot of people point to his interceptions, but a good amount of them weren't his fault last year. There's a YouTube video kicking around of his 25 INTs from last year, and I can count 10 that the stonehanded receivers tipped into the defense's hands. Dude had some incredibly bad luck.

Was wondering if anyone here has or currently uses a VPN to get access to NFL.com's Game Pass, which is basically an online Sunday Ticket. It's $250 for everything (can do monthly payments) or $200 for one team (no payments), but of course it's only available to those outside the US and Mexico.

But apparently you can use a VPN to gain access to it. I've read on several websites about people who do this. I just used a simple UK proxy and was able to get to the order page, but I'm gonna need something faster if I'm gonna shell out $250, so a premium VPN seems to be the way to go.

Just wondering if anyone here has done it before I make the commitment

I use an Amazon EC2 server to route my connection for MLB.TV to watch Braves stuff since I don't have cable. I would link you to the tutorial, but the one I used got removed. I essentially only use the proxy for the initial connection check, and switch back off the proxy when the game starts loading. The first year is essentially free if you keep everything to the free settings on Amazon; I only made a few initial mistakes in my setup, and in 6 months I've paid 19 cents for the server.

That'd be good if I cared for all the games, but I really only want to watch Denver's. And being in Texas with both an instate AFC (CBS) and NFC (Fox) team, it's damn near impossible to get a game locally unless the Broncos are actually playing the Cowboys/Texans.

Streaming was good for me for a while, but I'm getting tired of streams getting shut down midgame and having to do a mad search for a working one. And worse, given the decline of the team some places just don't stream Bronco games regularly. It may be a bit pricey, but it's worth it to be able to watch the game in HD live, or if I can't catch it live I can watch it archived whenever I'm ready

Alright, so I found a good cheap VPN service that offers a refund if I don't like it, so for now I'm risking nothing. I check my IP using various different websites and it'll come up as whichever country I'm using. I can use BBC's iPlayer when using a UK VPN. But whenever I try to get to the Game Pass page it gives me the usual "must be out of the US and Mexico" bullshit, so wtf? Why is it the only one I need it to work on is being an asshole?

Terrelle Pryor states he will appeal the 5-game suspension handed by the NFL once he gets picked in the Supplemental Draft.

The official reason for the punishment is due to Pryor making himself ineligible and trying to mess around with the NFL drafting system. The NFL is allowing him to become eligible and get the extra time he needs but also wants him to pay a small punishment for the mess he created.

http://www.cleveland.com/osu/index.ssf/2011/08/terrelle_pryor_finds_his_way_i.html
Nice article that details what lead Goodell to actually punish Pryor and done as a warning to him after initial feelings showed he was willing to sue if the NFL didn't bend their rules for him.

So do they have any faith in Jason Campbell?

Apparently not based on him sort of struggling so far in the preseason and the report of them wanting Pryor to play as a QB although most likely not this year due to the suspension.

They also sort of screwed themselves for the next draft because now they don't have any picks in between the 1st and 5th Round (2 were used up for Pryor and Campbell).

Money-wise if Pyror ends up not working out, Raiders only would be out $1-$2 million instead of the millions wasted on the mega-bust Jamarcus Russell.

They should have cut the number pre-season games for this season only and given the teams enough time to run as many mini-camps, strength/conditioning workouts and stuff as possible. In the rush to have the season as it always was they damned some players to not have a season at all.

They knew this was going to happen. The players left to their own devices is leading to all of these season-ending injuries. Some of the players hung around with each other and did the best they could without their staff.

Yeah, This would of been great last year, in that Miami Game where Rapistberger fumbled the ball and Miami recovered it in the Endzone, but the ball was still given to Pittsburgh....

didnt know about this:

The Philadelphia Eagles gave quarterback Michael Vick a second chance after he was released from prison for dog-fighting charges.
http://blogs.baltimoreravens.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/31-LFW-Tyrod-news.jpg
While serving time, Vick filed for bankruptcy because he couldn’t pay the $10 to $50 million he owed. The debt, partly acquired because of foolish spending, was amassed despite reportedly making an estimated $25.4 million a year.
So when Vick struck an astronomical deal worth up to $100 million Monday, it not only marked what FoxSports.com’s Alex Marvez called the greatest rags-to-riches-to-rags-to-riches story in all of professional sports, it also displayed an “ultimate show of faith (http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/michael-vick-new-hundred-million-deal-makes-him-ultimate-redemption-story-083011)” from the Eagles.
And what prompted such faith?
Vick’s new-found maturity, says SI.com’s Peter King.
“One reason the Eagles felt comfortable handing Vick more than $40 million guaranteed is because they’ve seen a more mature Vick,” King wrote. “A good illustration of that is his relationship with [Ravens sixth-round pick Tyrod] Taylor (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/writers/peter_king/08/30/mailbag/index.html#ixzz1WXUUC3wo).”
King said one of the most interesting conversations he had on his trainingcamp tour was when Vick talked about his mentorship of Taylor, who quarterbacked at Virginia Tech like Vick did.
The 10-year veteran took the rookie under his wing this spring and summer. They worked out together in Virginia Beach. (ESPN followed the two for a session, which is shown in the video below. I’ve posted this in LFW before, but it’s worth another look.)
With their hometownsjust miles apart, Taylor followed Vick’s career from a young age and grew to idolize him.
“Don’t idolize me,” Vick told Taylor. “Follow me, watch me, but brand yourself, Tyrod.”
From there, they went to work. Vick was determined to help Taylor get ready for an NFL training camp despite the lockout.
“Vick told Taylor that when the lockout ended he had to be ready to step into a practice huddle with the Ravens and call plays confidently,” wrote King. “Because Taylor had been exposed to the Baltimore offense from offseason exposure to Ravens veterans, he had an idea of what the offense was, and what the terminology was, and Vick told him during every workout to make sure he did his homework on the Ravens’ plays.
“Vick would throw basic NFL concepts at him, like how to call protections and how to recognize certain blitzes and how to be sure to go through his progressions on a pass read.”
Vick’s labor of love is already paying dividends. Taylor is surpassing most everyone’s expectations, and is legitimately contending to be Joe Flacco’s backup. Not too shabby for a sixth-rounder who plays for a team that’s expected to reach the playoffs and battle for a Super Bowl berth.
“Everything I asked him to do, he did,” Vick told King. “I’d say, ‘Get in your playbook tonight,’ and he’d come back the next day and I’d ask him things, and he understood.
“This kid I’m really rooting for because he’s gone after it the right way. He really wants to be an NFL quarterback. He’s really worked at it. One night I called him at camp and said, ‘How’s it going, little bro?’ He said, ‘Getting it down. Running with the twos. Going good.’

Had I known that I would have been much more comfortable with Taylor as the backup and not worrying about it. He's been really good in the preseason games.

Emperor Smeat

I believe Vick has been involved a lot with the QBs at Virginia Tech especially since his brother fizzled out badly for the college (off-field issues) and the NFL.

ESPN had a mention 1-2 weeks ago how Vick is usually called for input each college pre-season to help improve the training for the QBs so they are more NFL-ready and better players for the team. Obviously he wasn't able to help during his time in jail though.

Boomer

There's a part of me that misses Vick in a Falcons uniform (he was the reason I started getting into football at all), but I'm very happy with how the Falcons have turned out without him. He's an amazing player, but the risk-reward drove me nuts as a fan, and he probably never would have gotten as good as he has had he not left Atlanta and had everything else happen to him. He's not the quarterback I remember watching - he's better. The injury risk is still very present, and he's never shown super consistency over an entire season, but he will carry the Eagles on his back some games to make up for it.

That being said, I cannot believe the Falcons ever survived the whole debacle. Kudos to Arthur Blank, Thomas Dimitroff, and Mike Smith for making a team that looks to be good for a while in a really tough division, and fuck Bobby Petrino.

<font color=goldenrod>Clint Sintim might have torn his ACL, yet another season-ending injury. Didn't have much faith in him contributing anyway, seems like he is officially a bust...plus plenty of younger LB's have looked excellent. Anyway, with the pre-season over with and roster cuts due this weekend, I'm gonna take a stab at the Giants' 53-man roster. Mind, I wouldn't be shocked if they picked up a player or two off of the waiver wire when other teams make their cuts, especially at TE.

QB (2): Eli Manning, David Carr
HB (4): Ahmad Bradshaw, Brandon Jacobs, D.J. Ware, Da'Rel Scott
FB (1): Henry Hynoski
WR (6): Hakeem Nicks, Mario Manningham, Domenik Hixon, Victor Cruz, Devin Thomas, Jerrel Jernigan
TE (3): Travis Beckum, Bear Pascoe, Daniel Coats
OL (9): Will Beatty, David Diehl, David Baas, Chris Snee, Kareem McKenzie, Kevin Boothe, Mitch Petrus, James Brewer, Stacy Andrews

DE (5): Justin Tuck, Jason Pierre-Paul, Osi Umenyiora, Dave Tollefson, Justin Trattou
DT (4): Chris Canty, Linval Joseph, Rocky Bernard, Jimmy Kennedy
LB (7): Mathias Kiwanuka, Jonathan Goff, Michael Boley, Phillip Dillard, Greg Jones, Jacquain Williams, Spencer Paysinger
CB (5): Corey Webster, Aaron Ross, Brian Williams, Prince Amukamara, Michael Coe
S (4): Antrel Rolle, Kenny Phillips, Deon Grant, Tyler Sash

K (1): Lawrence Tynes
P (1): Steve Weatherford
LS (1): Zak DeOssie

---

Herzlich doesn't make it. Really gutting, and I hope I'm wrong...but I just don't see the Giants giving up on Phillip Dillard. It takes a lot for the Giants to give the axe to one of their 4th round or earlier draft picks after only one year. I would much rather they keep Herzlich and dump Dillard. Or, keep both and dump an extra OL, but that in and of itself is unlikely as 9 OL seems to be the Coughlin standard. If they want to have Bear as an H-back again they could dump Hynoski for the extra spot but I'm not too sure about that either.

If Osi didn't get his damn knee scraped out, they could probably just go with 4 DEs. Also with Prince out until October if another CB goes down I think they might have to make another roster move since having only 3 active CBs could be killer.</font>

So much for "Tebow is the 4th best QB on the roster" eh? Fucking idiots

Brady Quinn completed 4-of-12 passes for 26 yards and one interception against the Cardinals in the preseason finale.
It was a brutal performance in Quinn's first Denver start. He continues to look better in practices than games whereas Tim Tebow does the opposite. Tebow completed 7-of-11 passes for 116 yards and a 43-yard touchdown pass to Erron Riley to cap off a 94-yard passing drive in the fourth quarter. Quinn finished the preseason 22-of-42 (52.3 percent) for 276 yards (6.6 YPA), and a 2-2 TD-to-INT ratio. The much maligned Tebow ended up 20-of-31 (64.5 percent) for 310 yards (10.0 YPA), and one touchdown. It's clear who the primary backup should be.

Patriots expected to cut S Brandon Meriweather while RB Sammy Morris confirmed to be cut. They also got rid of S James Sanders and WR Brandon Tate to go along with some lesser names.

Morris wasn't a shocker considering he's been hurt most of the time and Tate never could adjust to Belichick's system even during the last 2 preseasons.

Meriweather was decent at Safety but Belichick loves Jared Mayo soo much he gave him the captain tag over the entire defense since last year. Ironic thing is Pats wanted Vernon Gholston in the 2008 draft but the Jets took him just so BB wouldn't have his top player and instead went with Mayo as the Plan B pick ... Gholston ended up getting released while Mayo is seen as one of the best young LB in the NFL.

blah blah blah, broken record. this has nothing to do with me. the second peyton manning is back in the game you're gonna be predicting a super bowl run and it's gonna be the same thing all over again. and then if they lose a game, you'll be talking about how worried you are. rinse and repeat. some new player gets signed, and it instantly means all your worries from before are gone and they're going to make it to the playoffs now when before, they weren't.

what does the way he acts have to do with being an 'actual' fan? last time i criticized a decision the colts made, RP acted like he was the only one allowed to have an opinion. and before when i argued that bob sanders wasn't worth the roster spot or the money he made because he never played, RP sucked his dick like it was going out of style, and then guess what, the colts ended up dropping him.

i thought a real fan could criticize their team while still having faith in them to pull through, instead of just jumping on every useless media story that comes along. it's not like the colts are having 'real' issues like some teams. there's nothing to be genuinely worried about, with management, coaching, or players. sure caldwell leaves a little to be desired, but there's no reason to think he is not capable of repeating his first season. and when manning is gone, they'll probably have some issues for a while. but for now, manning will be back, and if his health is solid, they will make the playoffs. anything else is useless conjecture.

and yes, i've heard the countless chiefs fans talk endless shit on their own team, and then turn around and start cheering them the second they start doing good. i 'get' it. but that's a team that has had serious issues and has given them reason to be doubtful.

ie; unless manning himself starts having the worst games ever, there's no reason to act like the sky is falling every other week. have a little faith for once. you seem to me like one of those people who would leave a game when they're down for the count at halftime, only to miss the comeback because you thought it was as good as over.

it's like in all the things on tpww, people see that i am a cynical asshole and i take grief for it, but in this one thing people expect me to be a pessimist because that's what it means to be a REAL fan, and the fact that i'm not means i'm somehow less genuine than all of you. yeah ok.

alright guy. except that's not how it resolved, and jeritron eventually conceded that he was wrong about the way he treated the situation, and we enjoyed actual conversation about the sport. i'd ask you to make your own opinion, but it's clear you'd rather just bandwagon onto someone else's opinions because you can't make your own by looking at the whole picture. (see what i did there) i've stated my case pretty thoroughly in that thread, and elsewhere about my own personal life.

i can deal with people thinking i'm a bandwagon jumper, because i know i'm not. you're the one sitting here crying and slinging insults because you can't take a little criticism about your opinion. not my fault that you've been observed flip-flopping every time some new thing comes up.

blah blah blah, broken record. this has nothing to do with me. the second peyton manning is back in the game you're gonna be predicting a super bowl run and it's gonna be the same thing all over again. and then if they lose a game, you'll be talking about how worried you are. rinse and repeat. some new player gets signed, and it instantly means all your worries from before are gone and they're going to make it to the playoffs now when before, they weren't.

what does the way he acts have to do with being an 'actual' fan? last time i criticized a decision the colts made, RP acted like he was the only one allowed to have an opinion. and before when i argued that bob sanders wasn't worth the roster spot or the money he made because he never played, RP sucked his dick like it was going out of style, and then guess what, the colts ended up dropping him.

i thought a real fan could criticize their team while still having faith in them to pull through, instead of just jumping on every useless media story that comes along. it's not like the colts are having 'real' issues like some teams. there's nothing to be genuinely worried about, with management, coaching, or players. sure caldwell leaves a little to be desired, but there's no reason to think he is not capable of repeating his first season. and when manning is gone, they'll probably have some issues for a while. but for now, manning will be back, and if his health is solid, they will make the playoffs. anything else is useless conjecture.

and yes, i've heard the countless chiefs fans talk endless shit on their own team, and then turn around and start cheering them the second they start doing good. i 'get' it. but that's a team that has had serious issues and has given them reason to be doubtful.

ie; unless manning himself starts having the worst games ever, there's no reason to act like the sky is falling every other week. have a little faith for once. you seem to me like one of those people who would leave a game when they're down for the count at halftime, only to miss the comeback because you thought it was as good as over.
dude... calm the fuck down.

I remember reading a few columns that said Coughlin has a bell curve with success in teams he coaches. Not sure about his BC record, but it seems to have held true in Jax and NY.

I'm kind of hoping Coughlin calls it quits after this season and the Giants can find someone else.
