I think there WILL be football next year - but I honestly think it will be a shortened season. The agreement will take ages to reach and only when it is reached can free agents start signing. Then the players have to get ready and all that shit (which they won't do if there is a work stoppage).
8-10 week season probably, nearly all of the games being against division rivals. So for whoever wins the SB that year it will feel underwhelming.

Kiper's Top 25
Nick Fairley * DT6-5310
Analysis: In great position, you'd have to doubt he does full workouts in Indy. A force all season, even when not 100 percent; a perfect fit for a 4-3 interior. Last week: No. 1
Da'Quan Bowers * DE6-4277
Analysis: The most gifted pure pass-rusher on the Board, Bowers has followed through on his talent. An ideal 4-3 DE, but he has a chance as a 3-4 edge. Last week: No. 2
A.J. Green * WR6-4207
Analysis: Allays any speed fears with improved route-running, and speed is fine. Green has worked hard to become a complete WR. Last week: No. 3
Patrick Peterson * CB6-1211
Analysis: An extraordinary athlete, Peterson doesn't just have safety size, he'd measure up to a lot of RBs. Great special-teams returner as well. Last week: No. 4
Marcell Dareus * DE6-3306
Analysis: A solid penetrator; pass-rush skills trump run-stopping performance thus far, which is a reason I can see him becoming a solid 3-4 DE. Last week: No. 5
Prince Amukamara CB6-1202
Analysis: Top marks for instincts, ball awareness and really good hands. It's as if he's running the WRs route sometimes. Ready to start. Last week: No. 6
Robert Quinn * DE6-4267
Analysis: Great natural pass-rusher, solid athlete, serious motor. He'll be a little raw but should shine during the workout process. Last week: No. 7
Von Miller LB6-3243
Analysis: Miller proved to scouts that he's more than a sack artist this season. He showed coverage skills to go along with known pass-rush production. Last week: No. 9
Blaine Gabbert * QB6-5232
Analysis: Strong arm, good mobility, prototype in terms of physical skills. The top QB on the Board in Luck's absence, he will be under the microscope. Last week: No. 8
Nate Solder OT6-9313
Analysis: A physical specimen, has great length, ability to add bulk to chiseled frame. Will shine in workout phase, and draft is short on elite offensive tackles. Last week: No. 11
Akeem Ayers * OLB6-4251
Analysis: Exceptional athleticism makes him versatile, but his production has also been very good. Long, with ideal OLB build, skills for 3-4 at next level. Last week: No. 12
Julio Jones * WR6-4211
Analysis: When healthy, Jones was dominant; when not, he was still good in 2010. Overcame drop issues; improved route-running showed off speed. Last week: No. 10
Cam Newton * QB6-6250
Analysis: Great size and athleticism, but also underrated accuracy. Extends plays; good patience. Lacks experience and refinement aside from throwing motion. Last week: No. 15
Cameron Jordan DE6-4283
Analysis: A great Senior Bowl week for Jordan. Versatile, coming from 3-4, but ideal size for 4-3. Solid vs. run, should improve rush. Last week: NR
Aldon Smith * OLB6-4262
Analysis: Great frame and athleticism; Smith has some raw elements to his game but he can rush the passer and could develop into a stud on the edge. Last week: No. 14
Ryan Kerrigan DE6-4259
Analysis: Production is no concern for possible 3-4 OLB, or 4-3 DE. Kerrigan led nation with 26 TFL and was impossible to block, even against double-teams. Last week: No. 13
Mark Ingram * RB5-10216
Analysis: Patient runner, knows how to set up and wait for blocks; big-time competitor; good burst but not top-end speed. Won't shy from contact. Last week: No. 17
Gabe Carimi OT6-7327
Analysis: A solid year of tape, battling a number of high draft picks. Better footwork, added consistency. Excellent frame; could go LT or RT. Last week: No. 19
Tyron Smith * OT6-5290
Analysis: Could become top tackle here. Good frame, athleticism and quickness; could add bulk, but deceptive leverage, strength. Last week: No. 22
Adrian Clayborn DE6-3282
Analysis: Good size, capable of playing 3-4 DE. Good motor; batters O-linemen. Needs to refine rush skills; down year for sacks but faced more attention. Last week: No. 16
J.J. Watt * DE6-6286
Analysis: Watt offers versatility, as a fit in either a 3-4 or 4-3 scheme. Relentless worker, solid pass-rush skills. Precise weight a question. Last week: No. 18
Anthony Castonzo OT6-7306
Analysis: Smart, reliable with solid footwork, but could add lower-body strength and overall bulk to improve leverage. Consistent worker; smart player. Last week: No. 21
Muhammad Wilkerson * DT6-5306
Analysis: Committed earlier than I expected, but has first-round talent. Scheme-flexible, disruptive, strong penetrator, could work in 3-4 or 4-3. Last week: No. 24
Torrey Smith WR6-1200
Analysis: Not just a speed threat, Smith has been productive. Good size, solid technician, can work over the top or underneath. Last week: NR
Rahim Moore * S6-1197
Analysis: Top overall safety, with outstanding coverage skills. Has improved tackling, ability to help near the line of scrimmage. Great instincts; ballhawk. Last week: NR

Just an interesting little fact about last Sundays Super Bowl
Super Bowl XLV was the most-watched Super Bowl ever on Canadian television with an audience of 7.3 million viewers on CTV (6.54 million) and RDS (754,000) on Sunday night. Preliminary overnight data from BBM Canada confirms that the Green Bay Packers' thrilling victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday was the most-watched television broadcast in Canada since the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games.
The national audience for Super Bowl XLV is 5.3% higher than last year's NFL championship game that had a national average audience of 6.9 million viewers.
The game received a 62-share among adults aged 18-49 and 25-54, with a 68-share for men aged 25-54, meaning more than two of three Canadians in this demo watching TV on Sunday night were tuned to Super Bowl XLV on CTV (English Canada).
Overall, Super Bowl XLV was watched by 17.3 million unique viewers, or more than one in two Canadians (52.2%), on CTV and RDS.

Technically yes. But from what I can gather, the owners have all of the bargaining power in this situation...and they feel the players are asking for too much.
The owners who sit in the luxury suites have the power already and will still be filthy rich whether there is football or not. Whereas the players who are the ones busting their asses and risking injury each and every week are the ones backed into the corner, especially the guys about to hit free agency and who will be unemployed until this is resolved. Sure, a lot of players will still be well off without paychecks, but they aren't making anywhere close to the amount the owners make.
If/when this gets settled, the owners will still get the better end of the deal by a huge margin. I doubt most (but not all) of them care that football is important to a lot of people in this country...so they have little reason to cave in to the players.

I dunno man, the revenue split the players proposed was just silly if you think about it. 50/50 sounds good on the outset, but the owners are fronting the majority of the costs (pretty much all the overhead really), so they should be getting a larger piece of the pie, relative to the players who are paying very little out of pocket to "maintain" the league.

Disappointed with Bob Sanders being released, but I can't say I didn't see it coming. In fact, I would say he had a perfect shot for a second chance last season and blew it. It sucks that he can be injured like that, and one could say it's not really his fault, but in the long run the team can't rely on him and can't build a defense around a playstyle that simply isn't there when it counts. His style is one that makes huge impacts and needs to be focused on. But that's what hurts so much when he's not on the field.

Injuries and a "vanilla" style offense that barely changed over the years. The reason it worked very well was due to Peyton being accurate and his O-line being very strong to give him time.
Once he lost his top WRs and his O-line began to struggle, the Colts couldn't fix it without messing up their whole timing system.
El Fangel
02-18-2011, 04:09 PM
Ah, so what do they need to adress besides hoping players recover, what positions do they need?
Emperor Smeat
02-18-2011, 04:15 PM
Mostly on the Offense side to either give more depth or develop players to replace a pretty old O-line. ESPN is predicting the Colts might take a WR as their first pick.
They could go with a defensive player but the problem is all the big name or quality ones are expected to go in the early part of the draft (8 of 1st 10 picks are supposed to be defensive players).
Even Belichick who normally likes to go with a defensive player in the first round is expected to pick a offensive player (probably WR or O-line) since the Patriots are too high up in the first round and this year they want to give better depth on the offensive side of the team.

ESPN now predicts Cam Newton to the Bills at #3 draft pick even with the twitter and interviews stuff of him viewing himself more of an icon or entertainer than a player and how nobody can ever produce a college season that he did.
It would be a stupid move by the Bills since they have a bad O-line and a pick that high is almost "must play" status for next year instead of bench/development.

And People around here love Fitzpatrick, so there would be no rush to start Newton week one. I would imagine he would find his way in sooner than later. ANd Gailey is great at coaching up shitty QBs to play above their skils (Fiedler, Thigpen, Fitzpatrick) - would be nice to see him coach someone with a legit arm and real talent.
In the end, there isnt anyone at number 3 that I would be giddy for. Fairley wont drop that far and there isnt anyone else that jumps off the board at me.

Todays NFL is all about having an Elite QB. The League has changed. Hell, Draft NOTHING BUT Qbs and hope one is that guy.

I remember this high flying offense from a few years ago with a decent offensive line. They had a superstar quarterback. Someone said a team with a good Defensive End could give them trouble.
They played in this high profile game against a team that didn't have a good Defensive End. Unfortunately, the team had 6! And those guys were rotated in and out of the game. The superstar quarterback ended up knowing what every part of the turf on that stadium felt like, after 8 sacks and even more knockdowns right after he released. (and a ridiculous amount of batted balls, including shovel passes getting knocked down.) He also threw 3 interceptions and lost two fumbles.
The game? Sugar Bowl between Georgia and Hawaii.
Sure, I am talking about a College Game, but similar concept. Matt Stafford could have avoided many injuries if Detroit had invested in an offensive line while getting him ready.
If Brady, Manning, or Rodgers don't have time to get the ball away, they're not gonna look as good.
Hanso Amore

I just hate this argument, I hear it on the radio every day in Buffalo.
With that logic, if you put the best offenseive in in the NFL in front of Ryan Fitzpatrick he would be a great QB.
No.
Great QBs make their line look good, and great lines dont do a damn thing for QBs. Carolina has a great line. What did that do for anyone to take a snap for them?
MEanwhile, you can plug any scrub in front of Peyton manning and they will look like a stud.

02-25-2011, 04:25 PM
The O-line won't magically make a bad QB into an elite or star but if the O-Line is strong enough, it would give that QB more time for passes and less hits on him.
David Carr is a good example of how a shitty O-line can kill a career since he owned the record for most sacks and hits in a rookie year and in his first few years. It ended up hurting his rhythm and development if once every couple of plays he hits the ground.
Of course if the QB doesn't care at all (ex. Russell) then it won't matter how good or bad the O-line is.
Hanso Amore
02-25-2011, 04:58 PM
Or could it have been that Carr sucked, and held the ball too long? He didnt show a glimmer of ANYthing resembling skill in his next jobs. And he played at a WAC school and was just a bad pick.
Everyone wants to blame everyone but the QB.
Staffords injuries have less to do with the line, and more to do with his frailty. His backups dint have major protection issues.
SOmetimes QBs just dont have it. WHen Running Backs or Defensive players dont live up to the hype, they dont blame the guys around them.
Its just stupid NGL dogma that people roll with.

Some NFL news:
Colts and Peyton Manning (with agent) are not even close to any new deal before the lockout is set to take effect. Its rumored the main obstacle is money per year since Peyton wants in between the $24-27 million range while Colts offered the low $20-$22 million range.
Redskins expected to cut Clinton Portis with the Lions rumored to be active in trying to get him for next season.
Jets expected to cut Damien Woody, Kris Jenkins, Jason Taylor, and Vernon Gholston. Taylor is expected to retire while Jenkins and Woody are both a bit old (Woody also a bit too injured to keep). Jets consider Gholston a bust and won't bother to keep him.
Newest Cam Newton draft position has him as high as the Cowboys for positioning but not as a starter. Higher picks Buffalo and Cincinatti could draft him as a starter.
FearedSanctity
03-01-2011, 12:54 AM
I was having slight hope that they may get a last second deal done. Outlook incredibly grim.
Owners are determined to lockout, even if the Union decertifies. Of course then it just goes from a lockout to "an employer ceasing operations." So really nothing could be done. Owners would have to work out 32 separate deals or take the NFLPA to court over the legitimacy of their decertification. Or if the owners still "lockout", the players have an antitrust lawsuit they can pull.
But of course, theres all the negative PR the league would get if they locked the players out even after decertification. It'd prove what the owner's true intentions were and their disregard for the fans. Meanwhile the players would look good due to them throwing away the NFLPA to save the season.
But if the owner's just invoked an impasse, they could run off the "last best deal" and use that until a new deal is reached. But the owners just want to be fucking greedy and add more games for them to make money and take more money from the guys who are the reason any of us watch.
Either way, it's gonna be a looooooong Spring

The biggest problem ended up being the Carolina Panthers owner never stopped talking and could have just hurt the process after being "hawkish" saying the talks will be done within the next 1-2 days (after last month trashing players and teams like Brees and P. Manning).

Since the Giants are granting him free agency, I wouldn't be opposed to them eventually giving him a low-risk 1 year deal to at least give him a shot in camp. Coughlin generally likes to have 4 RBs he can rely on to mix and match anyway and Bradshaw, Jacobs, Barber, and Ware sounds pretty damn good to me.

They can use a defensive end or big tackle in the middle ..Igor sucks. Bowen is ok. But a corner and safety obviously needs as well along with O-line. I'll be a happy camper if we have a choice to draft Fairley or Prince. Win win either one.

That's my whole point with Denver's pick. With that pick you need a guaranteed difference maker, and though they need line help, I don't see Fairley or Dareus as "sure things." I'm sure they'll both do well, but will they make as big a difference as Patrick Peterson? I really doubt that. D line is pretty deep this year that Denver can afford to get its playmaker in Peterson and then do DT with its second round picks

Denver has great talent on the O-line, unfortunately a good chunk of it was hurt most of the season. Particularly RT Ryan Harris. When Harris got back laaate in the season and everyone moved back to their natural positions, the running game improved. And it doesn't help that they were starting 2 rookies. So they basically had no chemistry. They should be drastically better next season when everyone's healthy and knows how to work with each other
QB, OL and WR are pretty much the only two positions I'm not worried about

Current status with the negotiations have the players dropping a few of their demands but at the same time the owners were found to be hiding some of the money and lying about their financial books to the union.
Supposedly a large sum of money was hidden from the players to go along with the demand of locking away $2 billion of the $9 billion from bargaining under stadium maintenance reasons.

CHICAGO -- Bears great William "The Refrigerator" Perry has his 1985 Super Bowl ring back on his finger, thanks to a 10-year-old boy.
Cliff Forrest of Fox Chapel, Pa., took $8,500 out of his college savings account to buy Perry's Super Bowl ring in New York.
"He only played in one Super Bowl," Cliff said. "I thought he would want it more than I did."
So the boy asked his father if he could give the ring back to Perry, who has been diagnosed with Guillain-Barre syndrome. The autoimmune disease attacks the nervous system and can cause paralysis.
Cliff Forrest Sr. said he wouldn't have approved the purchase.
"I would not have permitted the purchase myself, but his mother is a little more soft-hearted," Forrest said.
But Cliff admires Perry and had heard of the Bears' famous Super Bowl XX-winning team. Cliff's parents agreed to their son's request and set out to return the ring to Perry, taking a flight to Chicago and giving the former football player his ring before an autograph session.
"He was very appreciative and he said, 'Thank you,'" Cliff said.
In return, Perry gave the boy two autographed jerseys signed: "The Fridge, Thanks!"
Perry won't say how his Super Bowl ring ended up for sale. These days, he said he is doing better, though sometimes he uses a battery-powered scooter.
"I'm up and moving around," he said. "I'm doing what I like to do best -- fishing."
His former coach, Mike Ditka, believes Perry looks good, too.
"It's the best I've seen him look in a long time," Ditka said. "He's really working at it."
Perry played 10 seasons in the NFL. The defensive lineman and occasional goal-line running back became a national celebrity during his rookie season with the Bears in 1985, helping them win the Super Bowl title.
Even the Fridge has money problems..

Mark Ingram is not worth a first rounder, IMO. I wouldn't waste a pick on a running back in the first round, and probably not even in the second unless I really needed one. RBs are a dime a dozen, and most teams have 2 or 3 guys who can carry the load. It's not like the pre-2000's when teams ran on first and second down majority of the time. So Unless you plan on drafting a guy to run the ball 300 plus times, a first rounder just isnt worth it anymore. In fact it may be years before we see another RB takin in the top 10, barring someone special like an AP is avaliable.

For once the Jets don't have to play the Patriots at home in one of the first 2 weeks of the season. Jets vs Giants on Christmas Eve will be awesome. Dolphins away on New Year's Day will be fun. Hosting San Diego and a road game at Baltimore are intriguing. Really exciting schedule. I'm also glad they're playing the Raiders away in week 3, will seriously be looking to plan a weekend in the Bay Area for that.

Just the other day, when Goodell called Ochocinco just to talk, league lawyers were asked why he could talk to players and coaches couldn't. Turns out teams can talk to players, as long as its not business related. Whether coaches know this or not isn't known. NFL is getting into some serious shit by constantly refusing to do as the Judge has ordered. She says the offseason was to start immediately and they insist on putting it off to a time of their convenience. Then they ask her to clarify, she does and they still ignore it. Contempt of court is some serious shit.
Or as Florio puts it...
Earlier tonight, I explained that the league’s flirtation with a finding of contempt of court has intensified in the wake of Judge Susan Nelson’s order denying the NFL’s request for a stay of the ruling lifting the lockout. After reading the full text of her latest written opinion, I need to revise that.
It’s no longer flirtation. It’s beyond flirtation. It’s beyond courtship. We’re convinced that, if the league doesn’t open for business immediately, the league will be in contempt of court.
As deep of shit as the NFL is getting into now with the players pretty much owning their asses AND a possible contempt of court charge, think Goodell's ass my be on the line soon?
Emperor Smeat
04-28-2011, 02:01 AM
The NFL has lost every case dealing with the players in court with something around 0-4 or 0-5 record regardless of the judge.
The NFL really doesn't want the players to earn any extra cash even if it means loosing money and fan support in both the short and long term. They even tried weeks ago to lock away $2 billion from the $9 billion in play due to some tv or BS excuse that nobody bought.
The ironic part is the players do agree the rookie pay scale is out of control and needs to be fixed but they need a new CBA to do it.
SlickyTrickyDamon
04-28-2011, 07:48 PM
The rookie pay scale problem could be eased if NCAA would allow some sort of compensation for their players. They make so much money off of those players with the dream that they could one day be on an NFL team.
When you get a rookie you aren't only paying for the years he will be playing for your team. You are paying for the four years they busted their ass for NO pay.
The problem stems from the NCAA and i don't think a new CBA will be able to fully fix the problem. No other professional sport kisses the ass of the college ranks than the NFL. At every game you are told what college the players went to and you don't really get that with the other sports.
