New commish says the NBA might consider the idea of tweaking the playoff system so only division winners get guaranteed spots and then 10 spots for the best remaining records regardless of conference. Main reason for the idea is related to how long the West has currently been the more dominating conference in terms of records and teams.

There is a proposal where the division winners would all automatically go into the playoffs and then you’d seed the next 10 best teams. I think that’s the kind of proposal we need to look at. NBA working with the NCAA and NABC on a new proposal for NBA drafts.

Could take effect as early as next year's draft, allows more time for players to declare for the draft, and allows a special workout combine meant to restore college eligibility if those players are not seen as Round 1 worthy.

*Would move the date college players can withdraw from the NBA draft back about five weeks -- from late April to late May.

• Underclassmen would participate in an invitation-only combine in mid-May that would allow NBA teams to evaluate them and offer feedback on their draft prospects. Combine would include seniors, underclassmen and international players (currently, if an underclassman submits official paperwork to declare for draft, he forfeits his eligibility and cannot return to school).

• Invitation-only combine would replace the traditional Chicago draft camp.

• If a player submits draft paperwork and is not invited to the NBA combine, the recommendation is to withdraw from the draft and return to school.

• Could be voted on by the NCAA in January and take effect in time for the 2016 draft.
