The fight got a lot easier when I found the Missile Launcher. And I guess Preston found a Flamethrower and just face-tanked her most of the fight, that helped.

Stairwells are cool and all but I'm building a ladder to heaven.

And then I'm putting a space station there.

Don't think you can build ladders.

Are you specifically trying to avoid the word "stairway"? Because that's totally a thing you can build, but I can see why you wouldn't say that.

All the battles so far make you earn it, not too hard, but fun. Wondering how many settlements they are giving us, feels like I'm getting 1-2 everyday I play. Picked up one town and it's already fortified with pre-existing walls, but I have to replace the turrets due to karate chop damage from the overtaking

Yeah I definitely need to up my PC a bit at some point. On everything lowest settings game is relatively smooth, when I got to Boston Commons area though my framerate took a nosedive and it's been mildly low since then.

Hoping for a great deal on Black Friday/Cyber Monday for a new GPU, should solve most of the issue. My CPU is like 8 years old but still should be fine (AMD Phenom II X6 1055T).

Nerdish hardware question for y'all: I've always ascribed to the notion that "AMD CPU + AMD GPU" and "Intel CPU + nVidia GPU" for compatibility or whatever. I have an AMD CPU so my GPU is a Radeon card. Everything I'm reading though is saying that that's not necessarily the case anymore, and in the past couple years AMD has really dropped off and nVidia cards are pretty much superior in every way. So I guess my question is, should I be looking for the best AMD card I can get, or simply look for a great nVidia card since they appear to be objectively better now? (with no concern for my CPU type)

Fallout 4 Ships 12 Million in one day, Generates $750 Million.

For comparison, Skyrim was 7 million on day 1 and Call of Duty gig $660 million. Unfortunately, we don't have actual numbers, but it may have outdone COD amazingly.

nVidia has had superior performance in benchmark testing the past couple years. The cpu vs gpu thing is no longer an issue, for sure.

Sadly here it is. Fallout 4 is EXTREMELY hyperthreaded, and single thread performance is also very important. I don't know what AMD CPU he has, but it may well be bottlenecking his GPU also. Easy enough to tell by looking at GPU utilization using GPU-Z, Aida 64 or a ton of other programs.

I can provide more specific help if I knew what your system is, RDD.

Think a lot of it has to do with nVidia buying up as many PC games as possible so that developers design them based on nVidia tech. Also why a lot of problems happen with ATI/AMD cards since their tech doesn't get used as much for development or testing.

I found out that two of the lasses at work are Fallout and Edler Scrolls fans; their gaming nerdiness made them hot to me, which generally they are not.

Anyways, I've started upgrading my comp for this bad boy (though partly because my graphics card is dying). I ordered a new graphics card (nothing special better than the one I have now), and over the next month I'll get a new PSU, 16gb of RAM, and I intend to buy an i7 processor. It should keep my comp going for 3 more years, at least... until a new Elder Scrolls game appears, and I buy a new comp entirely.

AMD cards are more or less for when you are on a budget. On some of the midrange cards you can definitely find a cheaper AMD card that outperforms a similar tier nVidia card. However in terms of pure power, if you've got the cash, nVidia is king.

Yeah that needs a big time upgrade. Depending on your budget you can get a nice rig for $500ish also but of course the sweet spot is closer to $1000 if you want to play on very high settings and above at 1080p for another few years.

Not really looking for a fullscale upgrade, I don't mind playing on low settings for now, just wanna get the framerate a bit more consistent.

Most of my gaming (besides FO4 right now) is Diablo III and Dota 2 and I've not had any issues with those. Don't foresee myself needing a massive overhaul. Probably just wanna grab a ~$150 GPU and that should be sufficient

Also check out used AMD cards from brands that have transferable warranty (Gigabyte, MSI for example). I haven't been able to figure this out. I ran into an issue where I couldn't find Dogmeat. I ended up just 'cheating' and using the console command to summon him to my location. PC-only solution, obviously.

I guess your best bet would be to check all of your settlements. :-\ To make things easier, build a Bell at each one and ring it to get everyone present to walk to your location. Should make it somewhat easier to fish them out of hiding...

The weapon mod system could use some improvement. I wish there was a way to remove mods in the workbench menu more intuitively.

For example, say I have a 10mm Pistol without any mods whatsoever. I loot a Pipe Pistol with Glow Sights, but I have a ton of 10mm ammo and just generally like the look/feel of that gun. It should be simple a matter of scrapping the Pipe Pistol to break it into components, then I could take the Glow Sights and apply it to my 10mm.

But when you scrap the gun it just scraps the mods altogether. It would be cool if it removed the mods and put them in your inventory.

The workaround is to select the gun, and "build" a standard mod for it which will remove any special ones (the Glow Sights in this case), which then puts that in your inventory. Then you can apply that mod to your other weapons.

That workaround is fine and logical, and I get that mods SHOULD have some sort of component cost associated with them. It's just really tedious when you're out adventuring and take a "home base" break and have an inventory of like 15 various weapons you want to just quickly scrap but don't want to miss out on any good mods.

I suppose I'm just lazy. But that's my mini-rant. It's also really annoying to get Adhesives for all those Standard Sights. Yes I know about the Vegetable Starch trick but that's another step as well.

All in all I am happy with the crafting system, I'm just fussy.

Was also not QUITE getting how the supply lines worked between settlements. My minor OCD was annoyed because all my Workshop junk mats were not showing up in my Workshops in other settlements, so I thought that meant that they were not being shared. However, you can still utilize those mats when trying to craft or create buildings.

i.e. I have some components that can be broken down into Oil in my Castle settlement workshop, but no such components in my Sanctuary workshop. If I'm in Sanctuary, I can make any gun mods that require Oil even though that specific workshop does not have those components.

I killed a legendary raidet to get a combat shotgun with explosive rounds. After further mods to increade damage, accuracy, and range (scopes on shotguns ffs) it is an absolute BEAST. One shot obliterates raiders, gouls and mirelurks. Two at a time if they're close enough.

Awesome. My all-time favourite gun in Fallout NV was the Riot Shotgun. Thing was an absolute fucking monster. Have only recently found any decent shotguns and I haven't quite adopted them as my weapon of choice yet. Cait has one by default and the sheer impact of the sound of her firing is awesome.

Right now I'm using .50 caliber rifle... forget the exact name of it, think it's just a generic modded Hunting Rifle that's modded out the ass. It dropped off a Super Mutant and came with a Long Night Vision Scope attached which is great because I don't have either of the perks necessary to make that (my Gun Nut is only 2 and I don't have Science). The scope itself is awkward to use because I can't actually see where to friggin' aim it but it packs a huge punch. Otherwise I just use my modded .38 rifle for most of my damage, then swap to a 10mm when shit gets close

Kind of. You have to do actions that they like (pickpocketing people or lockpicking around Cait, for example) until they, uh... like you enough, I guess, and then they'll have a little monologue with you that sends you on a quest.

At least, that's been my experience so far. Been trying not to read too much into the mechanics of the game til after my first playthrough.

I've played a lot of hours already and have barely explored any of the map. This game feels huge. I've done a few Minutemen quests only. I got caught up building a couple of big houses in Sanctuary and putting beds in them for some reason, mainly just to see if I could do it. It's pretty awkward trying to build stuff from the first person POV, I wish for the settlement design parts they had a temporary aerial view of the lay-out and surroundings with a point and click style.

The game overall is what I expected plus a bit more, which is a good thing.

I tried to build a house and cannot work out how to align the doorframe with the walls. There was always a gap at the sides as it would align like, half a square back from the rest of the wall

The doors seem to sit out a bit so you need to try to line them up a bit in front of the walls. I know what you mean because it happened to me a couple of times before i figured it out. I've had more problems trying to line up corners.

I will try it again but I think that would leave half a floor tile uncovered next to how everything else looked. Then I started to think I should just make a solid wall and place a door in it, but that was wrong. I couldn't get the door to line up with a doorframe either

Then there's electricity, I figured out that you stick a connector on a house and then wire a generator to that, but then I was randomly not getting one of the lightbulb a working, I don't know if the generator was overloaded or what. I think the fact that it all seems pointless is what keeps me trying

If it it's not letting you make a corner, put a roof on. Then the wall will connect properly and you can take the roof off.

Putting a connector on a building doesn't power the whole thing, just the area around it. The other lightbulb is probably too far away, so you'll need to put another connector close to it.

Main storyline spoilers/thoughts below

So I just did the quest where you go to the Memory Den in Goodneighbor and access Kellogg's brain and shit. That was a really cool quest. Really wish the character ended up doing more in the game than just being the mysterious figure who stole your kid then you go and kill, with all him really doing is just kind of taunting you while you're in the one building. Feels like he could've had a more significant role... really "sympathized" or at least kind of understood the character via the flashbacks. Thought he was pretty fleshed out...

Love that you can rename guns too.

Oh yeah, added a drum magazine on tne shotgun so I get like 23 shots before I need to reload. It's like god mode.

Personally think the naming convention is a little wonky, though. Not so much in the item being named for all the mods you have on it, but if YOU exceed like 20 characters including spaces it stops typing. The game can invent names like 3 times as long as the one you're allowed to conjure up.

I don't remember. I bought a house at Fenway Park hoping I lost him when I tagged him out for Piper. Haven't checked if he came back there yet. Fallout New Vegas had a Companion Markers if you lost them.

Also, to aid in the search, build doghouses in your settlements and fast travel between them. He kinda roams around freely, but if there's a doghouse, he tends to lay in it a lot.

You might have dismissed him, like you said, but clicked on a place to send him without seeing where that was. I've had that come up a couple of times (with a different companion), only to see them chilling in Hangman Alley which is cool, because the town footprint at the time was pretty small. Black guy in a tri-cornered hat is easy to spot in a small village of 4 white NPCs. Seems to be a small hit-or-miss dialogue bug, and I hope that's what happened as opposed to you making him wait somewhere. But even if you did that, (speculation, ahoy) and given you picked up another follower, he would likely default return to the truck stop, so I'd build the first of the doghouses there.

On the subject of markers: yeah, this game could do with more of them. It shows, for example, the last power armor you got in, but you have to remember where you parked the rest yourself. Local maps no longer show entrances or landmarks, even with the place previously visited on the world map. I don't like not being able to at least see enemies when they're non hostile. Red dots show up, on the HUD compass, but disappear when they quit looking for you.

On the subject of friends: Strong is weird to befriend. I keep doing shit he doesn't like (which seems to be just about everything), but suddenly he tells me he respects me? Is he Bizzaro?

Make one of your settlements just for companions. That way you'll always know where they are. They're all at Sanctuary Hills. I'm just making the comparison that in all of Skyrim, I only remember encountering 2-3 companions, even though there's more out there. In New Vegas you'd either get E-DE with the right skills, or no-one until Boone. I got everyone else but it took a lot of looking. The first one in Fallout 3 I can't even remember. In a fraction of the time I've ended up with 8 people in Fallout 4, and no clear quest progression with a lot of them.

t was only a matter of time, but the first repeatable game breaking bug has been found in Fallout 4. We all knew this was coming.

The bug, which crashes to desktop on PC, is triggered as part of a settlement quest where players are sent to Monsignor Plaza. When trying to travel there as part of the quest, the game crashes. It's unclear if the same bug effects console players.

You can read more about the bug on the Bethesda forums. The developer has not yet responded to complaints about the issue, so it's unknown if a fix is coming.
Link to the specific bug on Bethseda's official forum: http://forums.bethsoft.com/topic/1546438-fallout-4-crash-in-specific-area/

In terms of sales, ended up having the 3rd biggest launch in the UK for this year and largest in series history. A bit more than doubled what New Vegas did for its launch in the region.

This whole thing about supply lines sure could have used more clarification. It would also help settlement matters if you could a) rename "unimportant" settlers (apparently, some unnamed scrubs are actually quest important nobodies that can't be sent away to other settlements for any reason) and b) see what an NPC is assigned to do with some sort of text drop of their current assignment (sort of like a Provisioner, but instead of the "name" change, just add it in addition) instead of highlighting what they're associated with.

If i have someone farming, and someone else shows up that is mostly doing nothing, I want to assign that person to something else. Instead, I usually grab the busy person who isn't currently standing by their assignment, so I can't see what they were doing, and my defense or food or whatever drops, then I have to figure out a fix.

It helps that I can dress them how I want, so I sort-of dress code people, and newcomers are a bit easier to distinguish and assignments are easier to guess.

Taking the fusion core would stop the power armor from working, so they'd have to leave it and if if was a successful pickpocket, they wouldn't be hostile. They should code it so getting in their power armour was stealing, but if you're in a place where you can help yourself, if would have been under those rules.

Yeah everything checked out except the part where I just waltzed into her armor and fast-traveled away with nary a comment from the now-underwear-laden Brother (Sister?) of Steel.

It is interesting to note that the components of the armor, even in my settlement, show up red as they are stolen, but nothing really changes when I use it at all so whatever. It's nice to have two sets of armor so I can have my companion in one as well when I suit up.

road doggy dogg
11-17-2015, 09:27 AM
Oh yeah, all those tin cans and scissors and duct tape and shit you can stash in the work bench and that's that. If you're in the "Transfer" part of the workbench there's an option to "Store all junk" (T is the default key on PC, surely there's a button on console as well). So any of that crap that's inside your workbench will contribute to your components total when you're in Build mode. You'll notice when you create something it will be all like "Used Oil Can removed" in the top left, as the game breaks down the junk for its components.

Word of warning with the "store all junk" command though; it stores ALL your junk, in the "Junk" header of your inventory. Before I do that I tend to put my valuable stuff (Pre-War Money, Gold Watches, etc) in a separate container so I can sell to vendors if I'm low on caps. Otherwise, Pre-War Money gets broken down into Cloth. As baller as the prospect of making a bunch of dirty beds out of $100 bills is, it can be a pretty sizeable loss of potential caps if you're careless

Sometimes it's hard to toss up the recruitment signal knowing well enough that I should establish a pre-made, finished product before setting it loose, but settlers are needed for the garden so when I have to work with a small plot it grows stressful real fast.

Also, when I go kill some raiders and arrive in the night to tell you it's done it's common courtesy to wake up when I arrive. I had to punch a guy for him to wake up last night and turn in a quest. Feel like they made the settlers lazy and drone-like on purpose. Makes for a tasty time though

Troubling news that will turn positive later today:

Due to morale plunging in Sanctuary, I took down Fort Piss(my mega building catered to me, lit up with the word "PISS" in bright lights), it looked thrown together. There was a room(2nd floor) dedicated to just beds. It reminded me that I was putting together a barracks type atmosphere similar to my experience of being in the military and centralizing all personnel in one spot, but these people, these settlers shouldn't have to live through my experience as they have been driven from their homes. Sanctuary should live up to it's name. The other settlements will continue getting the Slum Lord treatment cause they are needy. If they would make things easier and uproot to Sanctuary then things would be easier on me.

So first things first I took down my mega building and put all the beds in existing houses(spread it out, 1-2 beds a house). Started putting down furniture for bathrooms and living rooms. Once I gather enough Copper I'm going to put lights and generators in each home. Gardens in each backyard and assign settlers to certain beds, telling them apart from their clothes(I've gathered mass amounts of clothing to shotgun this project, along with weapons to help them stave off attacks instead of being meatbags)

Got Cait to open up about herself last night. Pretty twisted shit. I haven't done any of the BoS stuff yet because she was all "Screw them, we should do this on our own" and she is a reeeeeeeeeeeeally good companion right now.

Piper is at her job, and will remain there for quite some time. Have a feeling she is going to hate my character.

Love the ragdollish physics of Feral Ghouls when you shoot them with a high-impact weapon. Fuckers are FAST on the attack. Like having a Barb Leap Attack from D III or something.

About to get the third ending with BoS then I'll have done all the main shit. Looking through guides, happiness for settlements is fucked up and hardly worth doing. Needs expensive stores and lots of decorations it seems.

There's some side stuff I've not even found that I've seen people mention elsewhere though, so still plenty to do.

So uh. When I went to Glowing Sea, and generally when I go to tough areas, I'll use my Power Armor, and naturally give my companion a suit as well. Typically I would put a fusion core in their armor and then leave it at that.

Just now I came across two BoS folk and I jacked both their Power Armor suits and I didn't bother putting a core in one before telling my companion to get in it. Apparently they don't need fusion cores?

Oh and on that note I just thought, why the hell did it take me so long to just equip every one of my companions in Power Armor?

Ferals crossed into pants-shitting territory for this installment. The World War Z sprinting, the leaping, and the fact that even if you "clear" a spot, there's a chance more will literally crawl out of the woodwork (or, twisted, bombed out metal and brick work).

Actually, the biggest "holy shit" I got was my first Behemoth sighting. I was around level 14, just got jumped by a bunch of Gunners I wasn't ready for, and was in a pretty bad way, but had been kind enough to give me supplies I was going to pawn off at the diner. While cutting cross country, I see this big motherfucker and I was moving in what would surely be in his line of sight, so I made a NOPE detour farther north than I would have liked while overencumbered. If the enhanced movement patterns of every large mutant enemy in the game is any indicator, he would have sptinted over to me in about 4 steps and saved me the hike by knocking me back to Sanctuary. I'd be dead, of course.

Wishbone
11-19-2015, 01:52 AM
Ran into a behemoth myself at around level 15 I think. Sounds like it might have been in the same area too. Was it under/near some overpasses on the west side of the map?

Tom Guycott
11-19-2015, 06:45 AM
Yep. That's about where I was. It was my first encounter with Gunners, too, so I didn't know they were a hostile gang. Lesson learned. Same deal with the Scavengers being assholes in this one, who all turn hostile at your "tresspassing" on their claim... which is weird itself because I had one pay me caps for saving his life only to turn around and shoot at me because I was warned I was too close. You ran over to me, you bipolar fucker!

Thing is, I don't exactly have a battle-ready build. I put most of my SPECIAL into Perception and Intelligence at start for Sniper, and Intelligence for xp gain out of habit, and used Charisma as sort of a dump stat. Had to fix that for Local Leader, which screwed up my plans for offensive capabilities in commando, gunslinger, and the afore mentioned Sniper. Gun Nut needs max love because my shit needs supressors (have a legendary-dropped anti Super Mutant .308 pipe pistol that I had to remod to replace the previous workhorse pipe sniper I had modded up... that extra bonus on Super Mutants is nothing to sneeze at, especially between Hangman's Alley and Diamond City, and I can pick most off in one clean un-VATS sighted shot) I have a couple of pretty neat snipers, one of which is an oddly nearly maxed .50 (just needs a silencer and a long scope, everything else was up, even to mods I couldn't build at the time) waiting for me in storage until I can finish them or luck out and buy one from a vendor. Also had to up my strength for armorer and blacksmith.

I'll be better prepared for this whole on a second playthrough, but I don't want to fall into the Skyrim trap by starting that playthrough now.

Unrelated: anyone else have Pip-Boy issues? My XBONE updated yesterday morning, and now my shit won't connect. I use that as a perpetual automap, and now I can't.

*ADDENDUM: This appears to be linked to a Smartglass connection fix. The fix, while posted and detailed (not 100% accurate with the overhaul, but as long as you know where the settings screens are, you can find what you need) is totally not self-explanatory, though, because said fix has NOTHING TO DO with changing any Smartglass settings. But, I did the fix, and now my Pip-Poy app functions again.

Patch arriving next week for the PC and at a later date for consoles. Bethesda also revealed their patch plans for the game.

While Bethesda has not detailed what fixes will be coming in the patch, it has said it will initially be a beta patch on Steam, then a full PC patch, then later a patch for consoles. Apparently, this pathway for patch releases is going to be the standard for Fallout 4.

Another potential nasty bug was recently discovered and it involves trying to use console commands for the PC version of the game. Has the potential to mess up save files when used.

A lot of interesting stuff has been discovered from these commands but Bethesda says its not worth the risk to use them.

In a very Bethesda-like fashion, messing around with console commands on the PC version of Fallout 4 might completely bug out your game more than it's already bugged out to begin with. Warning folks not to use the system at all, the publisher's Pete Hines noted that console commands are "not supported or recommended on PC. [They] can very easily mess up save games."

Tips:

1. On the Lone Wanderer perk: Having DogMeat with you still grants you the perk's benefits, if you can handle the dog being with you

2. Adhesive shortage can be combated with producing the Vegetable Starch you can create at the chem lab: tatos, corn etc

3. You can sell Fusion Cores for a good price as long as they have a little juice left(1/100 juice even), when they are depleted it's worth piss

4. Power conduits placed on houses will power everything in the house and won't take any power from your compound(I am going to test this some more, seems too good to be true)

5. Weapon mods can be taken off weapons and put on others, some of the mods require you to change to a standard version, but the mod you replace gets put in your inventory, take them over to your workshop and put them in your inventory to be put on another weapon you'd like to supe up(Mods have their own tab or are close to the Misc/Junk tabs)

6. Contrary to popular belief, they didn't take out the Wait option, you just have to sit down on chairs/couches etc. and press the key you have for Wait(Y for Xbox, Triangle for PS4, PC w/e button, depends on if you messed with it, it shows up, love you PC ppl, just don't know what button yo, my bad)

7. Brackets in Hacking Terminal pages, []{}, <--- those things, finding them bunched together will cause them to highlight together! When you press them they give you bonuses like taking words out or resetting your attempts.

FOCK! How did I miss that? I have had companions for mules basically, nothing more. Hell, more times than most they fuck things up anyway.

DEFINITELY going to take that perk ASAP.

Thanks to #GamingWithTheKing for these amazing tips.

Yeah word @ those tips

In addition, you can make Cutting Fluid from the Chemistry Bench thing if you're short on Oil, which happens a lot when building defenses. Mats are pretty easy to get, the only one I tend to be short on from time to time is Bones, which you can salvage from the random bones you come across... I find Super Mutants tend to have a lot of them in their meat bags

Tips:

3 - At some point, my game negated 3 and I ended up with a 0/100 core in my inventory that I was able to sell at full price. It was definitely empty, as it actually cycled out while piloting the gundam. Never got it to repeat, and all subsequent empties disappear from my pockets. Also, looks like suits piloted by anyone but you don't actually drain core, and I used this to my advantage by having a follower heft them from place to place/transport extras to other settlements for docking.

4 - I noticed that, too! Thought I just miscounted how much power I ran, and wrote it off as such. Thanks!

Also, sometimes if you move a light, it stops working properly; either the light box doesn't show up or the bulb(s) still appear dark, or both even in a spot where it should draw power. Just store it and place it again, and it works like it should.

Got 10 hours into my second playthrough, not going to finish the main story a for a long time or at all in this one. So much stuff I missed and all I've done mainly is quest in Diamond City and Good Neighbor. Big fan of Good Neighbor.

Does it have a "New Game +" or you just started with a different character/taking the good/evil path to experience the one you didn't last time?
