According to the sheets, Impact's original plan for the Eli Drake match was for either Low Ki or Joey Janela to be the mystery opponent.

Seems Janela was the first choice but then he got injured, then Low Ki as the backup but contract talks fell through, and then Ellsworth as the final backup.

Thought crossed my mind, but what a stupid fucking work. Totally Russo-esque if that's the case. But I guess TNA is desperate enough to want whatever attention they can get, so blowing all the tension to admit its fake bullshit doesn't seem out of character. Especially since the brain trust there has had a big week knowing that they are slipping further in the ratings and had their show moved. They're kind of walking the tightrope between holding it all together and be logical and "oh shit, oh shit, oh shit." If that is the case.

But it seems like it might be real. Which makes more sense from the perspective that there is nothing to be gained by Aries no-selling a finish. If that's the case, the dude really is a miserable bastard, haha.

I mean he's technically been a free agent since winning the Impact World Championship. He's said multiple times he's not under contract and has even appeared on ROH TV. Still think it's a work and Aries will be back soon enough. Don't plan on checking out any spoilers and hope none get posted here.

I agree, if it's a work it completely undermines the great match him and Johnny Impact just had. I'm inclined to believe it's more real as I can see Impact wanting to go with Johnny Impact seeing he's a bigger name and on Survivor at the moment. If it is real Aries is a bitch and totally unprofessional because he's had a great run and could have easily been in the main event picture for the Home Coming PPV.

Personally I think Aries should have won the match. If there is any chance of them getting Jericho to show up its having the "best in the world" story that would make it work and I think Aries fits that better.

I do like that they've set up Sami Callihan vs Cage. That's a great X Division feud with two different styles that should be interesting.

Rosemary returning to take on Su Yung has been building all year and I'm ready for Rosemary's return. Tessa should hold the title until Rosemary gets out of the undead realm and challenges her.

As for the tag titles they've got LAX/OVE that could start things off but also could see LAX/Lucha Bros idmf LAX gets past OVE. Tag division has been the weakest in my opinion which is why I thought doing the LAX/OGz feud was a good idea to hide it. They've built up Lucha Bros and KM & Bah in the mean time, OVE was already established.

Not sure what is up with the main event scene. Could see it being a work but at the same time can see it being real. I feel like Aries should have won but also understand why they'd go with Johnny. If it is a work they did a good job but completely undermined their BFG main event in the process. If it's real than they have a serious problem with keeping their top talent happy between this and the Alberto El Patron deal earlier in the year.

Morrison was the right choice. Aries is a good wrestler, but he's got a lot of 205 Live and "never really proved his potential" stank on him. He's basically been the same dude since 2004. I can understand why you'd go with him when you've got slim pickings, but it was time for him to drop the belt and move onto other things.

I doubt they get Jericho. He's a smart businessman. I know he's working with Impact guys for his cruise, but to reciprocate the relationship is risky to his standing with Vince McMahon and New Japan. And what promotion is he going to get out of it? Anyone who follows TNA already knows the TNA guys are going to be there, and they're more than likely going to be presented like indy talent.

I totally understand going with Johnny Impact. As far as the Jericho stuff goes I don't really see it as a possibility either. Maybe if they continue on the path they've been on I could see it in 2019. People thought he would show up at BFG but I really didn't see it happening. We'll see how they're faring in 2019. Right now, given their shift in time slot, it may be much healthier for Jericho to keep working with New Japan or take a new deal with WWE. The only reason I see him going to TNA at all is if Jericho feels really bad for Callis and wants to experiment in order to try and see how much he can rekindle a husk. But it runs the risk of exposing it (or himself within certain contexts) as completely flat.

I decided to give the latest Top 5 ae watch to see if TNA is still as bad as I remember.

First episode of the Vegas taping was pretty good. Didn't see Cage cashing in the X Division championship with option C. Think that is also opening up the door for an Austin Aries return.

Konnan not letting LAX defend the titles against the Lucha Bros is interesting, not sure where they go with that but some twist are coming somewhere.

Shit happens in wrestling, but after seeing that spot, it does seem like a really dumb and amateur thing to do. Like, there's no way you can control that spot (and hence it did actually go wrong). Then he got credit for it by "acting like a heel." I'm not sure if it counts if it's not actually a work.

Pretty deserving to be honest. He didn't win any championships or anything but his programs created the most buzz for Impact all year.

What fucking buzz? They lost viewers, followers, their TV slot and eventually even their TV deal. Buzz means people get more more interested in you, not less. Getting people to go "this is shit" and turn off isn't creating buzz. It's literally the opposite.

Their latest Top 5 video or whatever did 100,000 viewers, which is about how many people tuned off their TV product this year. Keep in mind that some of these people probably watch anyway. They're not going viral. They have 2 million subscribers, which is in line between the ratio of people who watch Raw each week and then watch the YouTube videos they promote. There's no major internet boom, and yes, ratings do still matter to the fucking TV networks that need to schedule their programming. That is why TNA got booted from 8pm to 10pm and why they are now off POP.

Try and survive solely on YouTube clips that fewer than 150,000 people watch. I dare ya.

The idea of the YouTube clips, besides generating a tiny bit of ad revenue, would be to drive people towards the product -- not away from it.

Lol, WWE has 38 million subscribers. 19x as much penetration on that platform as TNA has. The gap is actually closer when you consider television ratings. They have more than ROH or New Japan, but guess what? "YouTube subscribers don't matter when you can watch things however you like." You can't have it both ways. Why are YouTube subscribers the most important metric? Wouldn't the number of people who actually watch the videos count more? Generally speaking, TNA's videos do seem to get a little more than a random ROH video, but so what? 100,000 views is still not exactly dynamite. Otherwise, don't you think YouTube would have wanted the show? Think a little before you speak.

The gap between New Japan World subscribers and TNA viewers is getting narrower and narrower. TNA still has some international deals, which is something they are probably praying to their Canadian owl god every day in thanks for. How lucrative are those deals? Probably not very. Will they be renewed? Possibly, but I know they got dropped hard over here years ago. And those international deals don't mean squat if you don't get domestic television, which seems to be the crawl they are heading towards.

50,000 Twitter followers. Jesus Christ. Cody Rhodes has 800,000. Do you consider Cody Rhodes to be 16x bigger than TNA on his own? The Being the Elite videos consistently get more YouTube hits than TNA, by the way. Like, 50% more on average. But sure, keep touting YouTube and Twitter off as markers for the company's growth as they lose television and viewers.

"Ratings don't matter" is a bullshit cop-out used by WWE to justify why there is less interest in their product, and it's nice to see TNA fans doing the same when they cannot retain 10% of their initial audience. Don't let that be lost on you either -- TNA used to get 1.2 ratings. It used to have about 2 million people who were interested in it. Actually interested in it, not just wrestling fans passing through who hit a subscribe button and then never watch another video. TNA is losing ground whereas promotions like ROH and New Japan, very slowly mind you, are gaining it. It's not like it's even happening to everyone. It's fucking TNA.

MLW do about half as many YouTube views as TNA, by the way. Consider how young that promotion is compared to TNA. Also consider that they might only have 41,000 subscribers, but their videos actually get more traffic than that.

Although I will admit I'm somewhat BIAS for personal reasons (doing the match the Xplosion match should air in a couple of weeks :naughty: ) I honestly don't think this was a BAD year for Impact. They have obviously restructured the company, smaller venues filled up for tv as opposed to huge areas with a small number of fans, they're looking to build new/ their own stars (Fallah, Rascals, Scarlet, Santana/ Ortiz and Su Yung) and using alot of "indie darlings" (Cage, Sami Callihan, Willie Mack, Johnny Impact/ Taya) to build a larger fanbase as opposed to the old trope they had been burdened with for years (OMG what's "recently released WWE Superstar" doing in the Impact Zone!!!!).

This is a very interesting time in pro wrestling, ROH is about to go through a major restructuring, TNA has been rebuilding with the (assumed) plan to expand again soon, all this talk of "All Elite Wrestling" and even big supposed changed to Lucha Underground next year.

Why would it make the TV deal completely redundant? Does that make sense to you? It allows those who don't get Pursuit to watch, not make it redundant. Being on Pursuit put everything in house for Anthem which seems to have been their plan to begin with seeing as how they do with their channels in Canada. You have unrealistic expectations for this company man.

Seems pretty decent to me for the first show. Good thing about being on Twitch though is it'll be there for those that can't watch live. Going to have to amp things up a notch if they want to reach 15k subscribers though.

I'm all for AEW but are they're not on TV yet. I dont think Steiner is there long though, said to just be for the premiere on Pursuit. He doesn't need to be heavily involved in anything, random appearances like that are probably best. He should have more mic time when he does show up though.

Overall I like the switch to Pursuit. It's a channel I already watch and it doesn't look like its from the 90's anymore. Twitch simulcast seemed to be a success aside from a few audio issues but I think they where universal. Commentary faded out a few times but mainly when entrance music was playing.

Sami Callihan needs a championship. Think he'd be a great X Division champion and they may be going that way. Going back to LAX vs OVE wouldn't make for bad matches but Impact needs more tag teams, bring in Pillars of Destiny full time. Would be a good contrast to the fast paced high flying tag teams they already have. Kinda think it should have been Kross vs Johnny at Homecoming instead of the face vs face match with Cage that didn't come out right. Could see Cage turning and aligning with Moose and Kross.

3. I'm not so sure about that. I really do think it comes with a lot of perception problems and stunts the level you can compete at.

Impact isn't trying to compete with anyone really. As they've shown they are willing to work with anybody from WWE to small Indy promotions. Sure there is natural competition between promotions for talent and such but they're also collaborating with one another like never before. It's one of the reasons All In was a success and I really think AEW should continue to work with everyone who wants to work with them. For them to take the petty route like WWE would be a mistake in my opinion. If you're not trying to compete against WWE there is really no one else to compete with and AEW is the only one trying at the moment.
