Would be better than if he had it happen at another PPV, like what happened during his entrance @ Verngeance 2003...worst part was he kept looking around and trying to start it for like at least a minute before he FINALLY gave up, got off the bike and walked to the ring...so bad...they zoomed in on 'Taker's face a couple of times and the commentators joked about how he was focused on Cena as a really bad cover up for what was going on...his entrance lasted probably over 2 minutes, when he should've been down to the ring in a little over half the time.

Wouldn't put it past the WWE to feed Strowman to Lesnar so Reigns eventually victory is made into a bigger deal but WWE really needs to pull the trigger soon on Strowman. If the sheets are correct, Reigns is winning the belt at Mania and having the long reign needed to make him into the next Cena.

Strowman's red hot now with crowds but its not going to last and WWE has a really bad habit of not striking the iron while its hot for stars.

I look at matches as a whole. And overall it was a steaming pile of dogshit. The action didn't really matter at all because it built to nothing. The ending was abrupt and horrible. It was like they were slowly building the beginning of a 20 minute match and then they just ended it halfway through in the worst way possible.

The Hardyz and Jason Jordan vs. Miz, Bo Dallas and Curtis Axel
who cares
*

Akira Tozawa (c) vs. Neville
Thought this was really good, will be forgotten because it was 11 hours ago.
***3/4

Big E and Xavier Woods (c) vs. The Usos
Best pre-show match of all-time, best WWE tag match since Revival/DIY III.
****1/2

John Cena vs. Baron Corbin
Basically a TV match. Don't give a fuck about Corbin so don't care that he's being buried. Glad we don't have to deal with a shitty Corbin title reign this year.
**

Big Cass vs. Big Show
Awful. Enzo and Cass are annoying as fuck but neither of them should be singles wrestlers. They hid their weaknesses well as a team, and are best served working the opening match to pop the crowd. They're really not capable of anything more. Big Cass is basically an even worse version of Test.
DUD

Randy Orton vs. Rusev
Should have just left this off the card but I guess they needed a Randy Orton match and figured an RKO "outta nowhere" would pop the crowd after the Show/Cass match they probably knew would bomb.
DUD

Bray Wyatt vs. 'The Demon' Finn Balor
Perfectly cromulent
***

Sheamus and Cesaro (c) vs. Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins
Pretty good match, giving it an extra 1/2 star via Cesaro popping the beach ball.
****

AJ Styles (c) vs. Kevin Owens
This would have been better if it was less a vehicle to build to Shane vs. Kevin Owens but it was still v good with some cool sequences.
***1/2

Naomi (c) vs. Natalya
I actually thought this was pretty good, especially because I figured it'd be garbage. Match played to Naomi's strengths, letting her display her athleticism with Nattie dictating the pace.
***

Alexa Bliss vs. Sasha Banks
Very meh. Alexa is great with her facial expressions and cuts a good promo, but she's still not much in the ring.
**

Jinder Mahal vs. Shinsuke Nakamura
Another mailed in performance from Nak, who only brings it when he feels the match/opponent are on his level. The Mahal experiment needs to end. He's got great presentation (for 80s WWF) but his matches are just awful and you're basically guaranteeing a mediocre to bad main event at every SD PPV, which is just not acceptable these days.
*

Brock Lesnar vs. Roman Reigns vs. Samoa Joe vs. Braun Strowman
Great hoss fight, unexpected result. I see people talking about how Lesnar showed up to work for once, but he basically napped in the back for half the match and threw a couple of suplexes. Multi-man matches are the best use of Lesnar, really. Star-making performance for Braun if he wasn't already basically a made man. They may hold off on him getting the strap until Wrestlemania. He's proven that he can really rally the crowd behind him authentically and he's a Vince wet-dream. Sky's the limit. Was pulling for Joe but whatever.

@Darkone didn't you used to love Lesnar?

I did and still kind of do, but it's hard to be hyped for a dude that shows up once every three months for a five minute match that's as predictable as it is short.

I still think he's a great special attraction, but almost all of his matches since the match with Roman at Wrestlemania 31 have felt pretty much the same. WWE seems to have a problem lately of finding a pattern that kind of sort of works for a guy and just mashing the shit out of that button until no one cares any more--like with Jinder, every one of his title defenses has been exactly the same, whether it was in a Punjabi Prison or whatever else, and he's not even a hundredth of the attraction that Lesnar is.

Kris P Lettus
08-20-2017, 11:51 PM

Dark One
08-20-2017, 11:52 PM
Not really sure what WWE's endgame was for this show.

They pulled the trigger on a bunch of title changes... but a vast majority of those aren't even moderately interesting.

Like, Naomi's reign was pretty blah and flat, but I can't imagine that Nattie "YAAAAAAAAAAAAYing" for the next two months is going to be any better.

Why kill Neville's legitimizing reign just to give him the title back six days later? What's the upside either than a short-term pop on Raw that they gave all of like two minutes to? Same thing with the SD Tag Titles--like, I'm cool with Thug Usos being champs again, because they're hot right now, but why take the belts off of them for a month, then?

Raw Tag Titles will be interesting, at least, since the crowd is super into Dean/Rollins, but given the track record of the past month, I have zero faith they won't immediately lose tomorrow night in a rematch.

The two big scenes that needed changing are the world title situations on each brand. Jinder's run has been just as repetitive as Brock's, just in a more condensed time period since he's on the show every week. It's been mostly the same promo and the same title defense show after show, but after playing 52-pick-up with the other scenes that don't need it, they leave both of those the same as they came in as?

Kris P Lettus
08-20-2017, 11:53 PM
It will probably be the same until Vince McMahon finally retires. Or gets rid of some of their older writers who are stuck with bland old ideas

Dark One
08-20-2017, 11:57 PM
That has been the same since the beginning of professional wrestling.

I would argue that the Mahal/Lesnar stuff is more egregious than most, because neither of them have any real substance to them other than the bullet points they hit in every defense.

Jinder's matches have plenty of white noise in them to fill time, which maybe obfuscates it a little better, but it's just that--white noise. Like, it feels like killing time for the brothers formerly known as Bollywood to get murdered, the Khalas, and then walk away to cut another promo about how no one likes him because of his heritage or whatever, repeat.

Lesnar is just a handful of suplexes in five minutes and then an F-5.

I'm not arguing that this isn't something that's happened since the dawn of time, but I will argue that there's usually something more substantive between the bullet points. Sure, Rollins won via Corporate Kane or J&J or other shenanigans month after month, but stuff still felt like it happened in his defenses between the bell ringing and the usual chicanery.

Seen most the show after the shark cage match. Thought it was good for what it was, assume they'll split the two if they do another shake up. Bliss vs Banks was a great match and probably the best Blss match yet in my opinion. Felt like I was watching a HHH match a bit with how dominant Alexa was in the match. Liked Finn/Wyatt but it was nothing special. US championship matches was match of the night in my opinion and sets up KO/Shane which could be brutal. Interested to see where Styles goes with the US title now as well. Didn't watch all of the Raw tag match but what I did I liked. She is reunion would be cool but who would they really fight? Kind of checked out of the Mahal/Nakamura match, just didn't have that big fight feel like the main event plus a weak build. Main event was exciting, Braun is a monster and a match with him and Lesnar alone should be great. Not sure where Joe goes now but again could be moving in another shakeup. Overall what I seen was a great show. Going to go back and watch the cruiserweight and SD tag team match later.

Despite there being a lot of amazing content on the Network that would more than justify the $10 pricepoint - WWE still manage to make me feel filthy for giving them any money when they put out PPVs like this.

Coming back to this thought now that the show is over and I have more "perspective"...it really is at the point where consumers need to decide what is more important to them: the main product being good or all the other stuff the Network has to offer.

For me (right now at least) it's the latter. Takeover ruled, I'm excited to see the direction NXT heads moving forward, and I'm kinda pumped for the Mae Young Classic. I thought this show mostly blew ass, but anything I got out of it would've been a bonus as the $10 was already worth it for the other stuff.

But for people whose disappointment of the main product exceeds any enjoyment you get from the rest of the stuff.......really don't see why you'd keep giving them money every month at this point. Seems kinda dumb considering how much other wrasslin' is out there in 2017.

We all know the main product isn't gonna really change much until Vince is no longer in charge anyway.

Questionable booking, length (5.5 hours), bad WWE title match.

I'd have cut Cass vs. Show and Orton vs. Rusev. Those are TV matches. The only purpose they could have served on this show is as cooldown matches but instead they put them both at the start of the show which made the PPV feel DOA.

Cut the pre-show by an hour and main event it with Naomi vs. Natalya. Open with the Hardyz/JJ vs. Miztourage.

Open the PPV with the SD tag match to heat up the crowd. First couple of matches on the PPV killed the show's momentum before it even got started. Move the cruiserweight match to the PPV also.

Show would have been 100x better if they cut some of the filler and paced it better.

There was no fixing the WWE title match. Nak doesn't bring it in matches he feels are beneath him. He was the same in NJPW. They shouldn't have booked the match at all, or just had Nak bulldoze him to end this charade.

Owens vs. Styles would have been way better if it wasn't basically just an angle to build to Shane vs. Owens. Kinda weird to book a blowoff match between two of the best wrestlers in the world at a major PPV to build to a match between one of the wrestlers and the non-wrestler guest referee which will likely take place at a B PPV.

I'd have had Tozawa retain as well, Neville has basically done all he can do in the CW division. Would be great to move him up. Imagine if they put him in a program with Styles now.

I love wrestling, but man this show dragged and was just too long.

All the matches were at least good, but wasnt a fan of Jinder/Nak and Show/Cass.

On a 4-6 hour PPV, the writing needs to be off the charts and creative to keep people in attendance and at home invested. You can get away with poor booking but good matches on a 2.5-3 hour show, but not a show like last night.

Good stuff from majority of the talent, there were just flat stories throughout the show.

Reason for the Cruiser title change yesterday and why it also happened last week on RAW.

It appears that Akira Tozawa's Cruiserweight title win on Monday was a decision that was made by Vince McMahon the day of the event, according to the latest Wrestling Observer Radio. With the title changing hands again at SummerSlam, it was obviously a change just for TV purposes made by Vince as the long term plan is still to push Neville as the champion.

So not even Tozawa is being seen as the guy to lead the division next.

So what did baron corbin do to have everything stop for him? Didnt wwe do the same thing to kennedy? But just took the case from him instead. Killed the push either way. Is he just that terrible?

He got into a Twitter argument with someone who served. They defended Dave Meltzer and Corbin called him a geek who hasn't done anything, and the guy replied by with something like "Vince McMahon didn't think I was a geek when he met me last year as I was fighting for this country," and Corbin back-tracked.

Honestly, faux pas from Corbin that it might be, he back-tracked in about the smartest way possible. "I was wrong, I don't like your opinion, but you're not nothing." Or something like that. It's dumb, because it's heels on Twitter, but I'd rather he be punished because he sucks, haha.
