The enemies in Super Smash Bros. Brawl: The Subspace Emissary are called the Subspace Army!

Right now, I’d like to introduce some of the more powerful ones.

ROADER
http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/modea/images/modea06/modea06_070919a.jpg

This enemy looks like a motorised unicycle. These guys ride around in groups, and are both fast and powerful.

POPPANT
http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/modea/images/modea06/modea06_070919b.jpg

Their bucket trousers are filled with presents and sweets. If you approach these cowards, they’ll flee.

BYTAN
http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/modea/images/modea06/modea06_070919c.jpg

Leave these enemies be and they’ll multiply in a flash. Destroy them before they become too much trouble!

TROWLON
http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/modea/images/modea06/modea06_070919d.jpg

This creature will use its trowel-like arms to lift characters up and fly off with them.

SHAYDAS
http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/modea/images/modea06/modea06_070919e.jpg

This unpleasant, fog-like enemy has a weak spot at the core of its chest!

AUROROS
http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/modea/images/modea06/modea06_070919f.jpg

This bird dives from above, piercing the ground. You can pull out any Auroros that sticks itself into the ground.

GREAP
http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/modea/images/modea06/modea06_070919g.jpg

It’s HUGE! It attacks by swinging two sickles down upon you. Its red head is its weak spot.

The R.O.B. Squad
http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/modea/images/modea06/modea06_070919h.jpg

The escort the Ancient Minister brings with him is a R.O.B squad?! There are some that fire beams and others that fire missiles.

There are other enemies that will appear and try to impede your progress. Good luck! Don’t lose! And don’t run away!

This is one of the Pokémon you can choose at the beginning of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. It’s quite charming, so I’m sure there were quite a few people who chose it.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/items/mball/images/mball05/mball05_070920b.jpg
It emerges from the Poké Ball!

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/items/mball/images/mball05/mball05_070920c.jpg
Suddenly, it starts sliding around using Surf!

The simpler the stage, the greater the effect of this may be. If you’re wondering why, it’s because anyone who gets caught up in that surf will get washed away with Piplup.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/items/mball/images/mball05/mball05_070920d.jpg
They’re getting washed away!

If you get washed away, do what you can to get back. Even simple characters like this really stir things up on stages.

The legendary mercenary makes his miraculous Smash debut! This law-breaking news roared around the world.

He comes fully-loaded with cool and showy weapons that only he could possess. Fusing these together with the different wondrous worlds on display really does offer new horizons.

They also put up some music from MGS4 that will appear in the game over on the site.

It’s not just Snake’s special moves that use military hardware – so do his smash attacks. Can that be?

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/characters/images/snake/snake_070921e.jpg
He’s shooting something up in the air!

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/characters/images/snake/snake_070921f.jpg
He’s planting something!

Side Special Move: Remote Missile

This is called a Nikita. It’s a remote-controlled missile.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/characters/images/snake/snake_070921g.jpg
Missile fired!

You can control the missile yourself! But since Snake is so focused on controlling the missile, he’s completely defenceless while he does so.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/characters/images/snake/snake_070921h.jpg
If things get dangerous, press the shield button to stop controlling the missile.

Standard Special Move: Hand Grenade
http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/characters/images/snake/snake_070921i.jpg
Try walking around with the pin out.

Press your special-move button to pull out the pin. The grenade will explode after a few seconds, so be aware of the time and press the special-move button again to toss the grenade.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/characters/images/snake/snake_070921j1.jpg http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/characters/images/snake/snake_070921j2.jpg http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/characters/images/snake/snake_070921j3.jpg

Strong throw!-------Mid throw!-------Soft throw!

There are three ways to throw the grenade. Tilt the Control Stick forwards, not at all, or backwards

In some cases, grenades you drop may get returned to sender.

And his recovery special move is...

Up Special Move: Cypher
http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/characters/images/snake/snake_070921k.jpg
Oh! Watch out! In times like this...

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/characters/images/snake/snake_070921l.jpg
Shoosh-shoosh-shoosh-shoosh-shoosh!

Use his flying reconnaissance camera, the Cypher, to recover. Snake can’t fly, but he’ll do what he must.

He’ll use anything in the battlefield. That’s the crux of survival.

What are trophies? These are solid objects that appear as prizes and offer explanations of characters!

You can check out the poses and learn the backgrounds of a variety of characters.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/various/images/various05/various05_070924a.jpg
Characters in solid form, complete with explanations!

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/various/images/various05/various05_070924b.jpg
You can view them from a variety of angles. Whirrrrrreeee...

You’re going to get a lot of these, so we’ve added images of them to the list to make them easier to identify.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/various/images/various05/various05_070924c.jpg
You can arrange them by series.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/various/images/various05/various05_070924d.jpg
And you can line them all up. This can’t be outdoors, can it?

Take a look at these, for example, if you want to learn more about a character you saw in the background in Smash. Or when your interest in a particular character’s back-story has been piqued, and you want to learn more about them.

Having trophies that explain your characters is quite useful.

And, in a bonus mode, you can even create something like this.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/various/images/various05/various05_070924e.jpg
Choose several trophies and place them however you like!

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/various/images/various05/various05_070924f.jpg
You can even change the background. It’s all up to you.

Since we’ve gone to the trouble of gathering all these universes together, I hope you’ll enjoy gaining a deeper understanding of these characters. It’s with that intent that we’re all working so hard.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I knew trophies would be back. I'm sure I'm not the only one that prefers trophies to stickers.

Rocketbarrel Barrage
The weapons Diddy Kong wields are his Peanut Popgun and his Rocketbarrel Boost.

His Final Smash makes superb use of both of these weapons!

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/characters/images/diddykong/diddykong_070925a.jpg
He has popguns in both hands! And his rocketbarrels are firing!

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/characters/images/diddykong/diddykong_070925b.jpg
He flies majestically through the sky!

Wow! The controls make it feel like you’re flying with a rocket pack! It’s really fun. Tilt his body left and right to move.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/characters/images/diddykong/diddykong_070925c.jpg
It’s a popgun barrage! Explosions everywhere!

The Peanut Popgun fires straight down, so you change the peanut firing angles by tilting Diddy left to right. I highly suggest mastering this.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/characters/images/diddykong/diddykong_070925d.jpg
When time runs out, the rocketbarrels explode!

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/characters/images/diddykong/diddykong_070925e.jpg
Plus, you can gobble up the peanuts that fall to the ground.

Will you be enjoying some? No? Well, your opponents can eat the peanuts, too. So when your shots don’t hit, your opponents end up recovering damage instead of taking it.

Maybe this means that there will be an Animal Crossing character in the game. I'm loving Resetti!

Drakul

Yeah, an AC character is likely considering there is an AC stage, music and two AC items so far. Snake should be fun to play as. Supposedly, he wont be the only 3rd party character in the game. Sakurai, the guy that's in charge of making the game, says there's going to be 1 or 2 other 3rd party characters in addition to Snake. As long as they have been on a Nintendo console and they can get the rights to use them in the game.

Obviously, everyone is assuming one of the other guys will be Sonic.

Triple Finish

It’s the Pokémon Trainer’s Final Smash: Triple Finish! It combines the powers of Squirtle, Ivysaur and Charizard!

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/characters/images/pokemon_trainer/pokemon_trainer_070927a.jpg
Any one of them can get the Smash Ball.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/characters/images/pokemon_trainer/pokemon_trainer_070927b.jpg
Go! Triple Finish!

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/characters/images/pokemon_trainer/pokemon_trainer_070927c.jpg
It’s super effective!

...So, what is with that text window below?

Squirtle = Hydro Pump
Ivysaur = Solar Beam
Charizard = Fire Blast

These are the moves they use. Isn’t it a beautiful combination? A fire-type attack, a water-type attack and a grass-type attack? (Not really.)

If an opposing Pokémon gets the Smash Ball, at the very least take care to not be standing immediately beside it.

This is a mode that determines which player stands victorious on the summit after winning many battles against many foes!

I won’t go into much detail, so just try it out for yourself. Take advantage of its robust tourney-generating functions!

Of course, if you don’t have a large number of friends to hand, you may not have much need for a tourney.

Still, we’re working seriously to make this mode fun for everyone.

However, you can also play this by yourself against computer opponents, so try it out if you’re so inclined.

I hope there's an Animal Crossing character. Mii support would be awesome too. Have a move set for a Mii, and just use whatever Mii you want. They should attack with a Wiimote and nunchuck.

Drakul
09-29-2007, 01:01 AM
Yeah, or they could replace the fighting polygons/wireframes but I think those Primid guys will do that instead.

If a Mii was a character, wouldn't they use golf clubs, tennis rackets and baseball bats for close range and a bowling ball for projectile attacks? They could use the boxing gloves when they punch. Basically make the moveset up from Wii Sports.
The only problem with that is Peach uses golf clubs and tennis rackets and Ness uses the bat plus we have the Homerun bat as an item.

Once you know how to attack, the next thing you have to think about is avoiding enemy attacks. That’s where the shield button comes in handy.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/howto/basic/images/basic06/basic06_071004a.jpg
...you guard against your enemy’s attack with your shield!!

Shielding against attacks is a top priority. If you don’t take any hits, you can’t be beat! However, the more attacks your shield takes, the smaller it gets.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/howto/basic/images/basic06/basic06_071004b.jpg
If your shield breaks, you lose consciousness.

But more important than guarding is dodging.

You just tap the Control Stick in a direction while holding the shield button.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/howto/basic/images/basic06/basic06_071004c.jpg
Tap the Control Stick down to do a sidestep dodge!

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/howto/basic/images/basic06/basic06_071004d.jpg
Tap it backwards to do a backward-roll dodge!

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/howto/basic/images/basic06/basic06_071004e.jpg
And tap forwards to do a forward-roll dodge and get behind your opponent!

If you can do these moves, your enemies will have a hard time landing their attacks. And they make you momentarily invincible, so using them proactively is OK.

Use these moves as much as you can even before you get used to them. Sometimes things become clearer that way.

It’s the brute tank of Team Star Fox – the Landmaster. Surely he wouldn’t bring that thing out?!

Don’t ride the Landmaster!

Jump to hover. Tilt the Control Stick down to roll. And, of course, fire its cannon with the attack button.

FIRE! This hurts. A lot! So watch out!

It’s so big, it might be hard to turn around. But its rule-breaking power and authority are unstoppable.

I will announce this right here, right now. In Adventure Mode: The Subspace Emissary, you can also play with two players simultaneously!

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/modea/images/modea07/modea07_071005a.jpg
Congratulations! It’s co-op play!

Now even siblings can play together with no need for arguments.

Of the two, one will be the protagonist. Essentially, the camera follows the protagonist, so the other player has to keep up.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/modea/images/modea07/modea07_071005b.jpg
Having a second player join is completely optional.

Basically, it’s the same as a standard Smash brawl, so if you take damage and get knocked off the screen, you lose a life.

However, this mode features a space jump that allows the Player 2 to return to where the Player 1 is, even after getting scrolled off the screen.

If Player 2 gets separated from Player 1 by the screen scroll, he or she will quickly space jump back to Player 1's side. But if Player 2 gets knocked off the screen by an enemy, that counts as a lost life.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/modea/images/modea07/modea07_071005c.jpg
You just come back naturally.

The Subspace Emissary has the following map screen.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/modea/images/modea07/modea07_071005d.jpg
This is the map!

The protagonists form teams based on the developments in the story, and the characters they encounter join their team.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/modea/images/modea07/modea07_071005e.jpg
Choose a team and enter a stage.

Your stock count, or the number of lives you can lose, is set for each stage.

In single-player mode, each time you lose a life, you switch to a different character on your team and are revived as that new character until you run out of stock lives. (You choose the character order for your team members at the start of each stage.)

In co-op mode, when either Player 1 or Player 2 loses a life, that player will be revived as another team member until the stock count runs out.

But, if Player 1 loses a life after the stock count has run out, that's the end! Player 2 is participating simply as an optional player, so be careful.

By the way, you can also choose the difficulty level.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/modea/images/modea07/modea07_071005f.jpg
From Easy to Intense!

If you choose Easy, it will be quite easy indeed, so we definitely want people who aren’t very good at this type of game to give it a try! Even they will be able to make it to the ending.

But, if you choose a harder difficulty, your rewards will be greater. That’s another part of the fun.

And...

There’s a method of powering yourself up as needed to do battle with the Subspace Army – a method that has not been seen before.

I’ll explain this in great detail another time.

Standard Special Move: Paralyzer
http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/characters/images/zerosuit_samus/zerosuit_samus_071008a.jpg
Bzzzzzzzzzzt! I can’t get enough of this.

A personal protection device, the Paralyzer stuns opponents. If you can charge it up for a bit, you can land additional attacks while your opponent is stunned.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/characters/images/zerosuit_samus/zerosuit_samus_071008b.jpg
A down smash will fire it at your feet!

But this is only self-defence at best. It does not have the power of an explosive attack. Where and when you use this is key.

What really brings out some characteristic Samus skills is when this gun transforms and releases a whip: the Plasma Whip.

Side Special Move: Plasma Whip
http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/characters/images/zerosuit_samus/zerosuit_samus_071008c.jpg
The flash at the tip of this short whip is quite powerful!

Up Special: Plasma Wire
http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/characters/images/zerosuit_samus/zerosuit_samus_071008d.jpg
Shoot it straight up to pull enemies towards you!

These two moves can be used to grab and hang from an edge. They can reach even if the ledge is pretty far away, so pay close attention to distance and timing and aim to dangle from the edge.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/characters/images/zerosuit_samus/zerosuit_samus_071008e.jpg

The original Sonic the Hedgehog game used only one button. I think that its simple yet exhilarating gameplay was its virtue.

And given that this game’s controls are also simple, I think it personifies his distinctive characteristics.

Side Special Move: Spin Dash
http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/characters/images/sonic/sonic_071011a.jpg
Yeah, you have to have this.

Hop into a supersonic Spin Dash. If you charge it up just a bit, your speed will increase.

It’s also possible to rise up while spinning.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/characters/images/sonic/sonic_071011b.jpg
Spin Dash, jump. A two-hit combo.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/characters/images/sonic/sonic_071011c.jpg
Then keep pursuing with a midair attack!

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/characters/images/sonic/sonic_071011d.jpg
And do a Spin Dash in midair to return.

That, too?

Down Special Move: Spin Charge

By holding the Control Stick down and tapping the special-move button, you charge up your spin and do a Spin Dash. This may feel better for some, as there’s no pop.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/characters/images/sonic/sonic_071011e.jpg
KEEEEEEEEEE!

Up Special Move: Spring Jump

And his up special move is the Spring Jump. That spring launches you waayyy up in the air.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/characters/images/sonic/sonic_071011f.jpg
That’s high!

You might not use it on the ground much, but rumour has it that if you do, the spring that remains can be used by other characters.

IGN Wii:

October 11, 2007 - After Nintendo's Japan announcement of the delay of Smash Bros. Brawl, American gamers instantly began speculating the meaning of that announcement for the US release of Nintendo's battler. Just moments ago at Nintendo's media summit in San Francisco, CA, vice president of marketing and corporate communications George Harrison has confirmed that the game will be getting a delay in the US as well, hitting stores on Sunday, February 10 of 2008.

While this delay is of course disappointing for the hardcore crowd, who have been dead set on getting a taste of Brawl in 2007, Harrison remained extremely optimistic on the subject, mentioning Sonic's involvement in the game, the attempt by Nintendo to reach out to top characters from around the gaming industry, and the mysterious comments Iwata made less than 24 hours ago, stating that Smash would allow gamers to share content with each other both online and off. As expected, there's still more to the Smash story than we know.

While playing the game, you might encounter an interesting situation. At times like this, you must PAUSE!

Stop the action and look at the scene from all different directions.

If that pause in the action makes for an interesting shot that you wish you could keep, then by all means, do so. Take a SNAAAAAAAPSHOT!

Take funny snapshots...

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/various/images/various07/various07_071012e.jpg
As often as you like!

You can take snapshots like the images we’ve shown here on Smash Bros. Dojo.

We had a snapshot mode in the past, but you couldn’t take a snapshot anytime in the middle of a match. And they were saved to a GameCube Memory Card—it wasn’t like you could save several dozens of photos.

However! This time there are SD cards! With those, you’ll have room to save plenty of snapshots!

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/various/images/various07/various07_071012f.jpg
Just give it a name and save it to either location.

But wait! There’s more!

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/various/images/various07/various07_071012g.jpg
"Send"???

This feature allows you to send your snapshots to people you’ve registered as Friends for Nintendo WFC play. So you can give them funny little screenshots as presents. You can view them in the Album.

Don’t you think you’d be happy to suddenly get a funny photo from a friend? Perhaps online brawling isn’t the only way to compete.

Uh, as for that thing that’s blurred out, that’s still a secret. We’re still in development, so I apologise in advance if it gets dropped, but we are thinking of one more trick for this mode.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

My guess is, the "blurred" thing will be some kind of edit mode. Drawing on the snapshots etc.

A few other bits of info I've came across. There are two videos on Gamevideos.com and one is Sonic Vs Link. In Sonic Vs Link we are told that you don't just grab Smashballs. It floats around the screen and you chase it and keep hitting it until it breaks. Whoever breaks it gets the Final Smash. They showed the laser sword again and this time it's blue instead of pink. They also said the homerun bat will have unique animations for each character.

The other video is Samus Vs Mario and shows the character select screen and we hear the voice over guy. I don't think it's the same guy from Melee.
Character entrances are back and Advance Wars has an Assist Trophy. Tiny sprites from the game appear and charge you off the stage.

The scale of this stage is one of the grandest in the Smash Bros series. The scale is, say, about the same as that Temple stage - you know the one I’m talking about?

It’s New Pork City.

It is a city of chaos.

It’s too detailed to fully understand...

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/stages/images/stage14/stage14_071015b.jpg
The buildings are like...billboards?

At any rate, it’s big, so if all someone does is run away, there will be no end to it. But with so much freedom, it becomes a giant playground.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/stages/images/stage14/stage14_071015c.jpg
There’s quite a lot of freedom.

Also, a monster known as the "Ultimate Chimera" appears on this stage.

The-there it is!

If this guy sinks his teeth into you, it will launch you off in one blow. It’s pretty much certain that if you get hit, you’ll lose a life. But there’s nothing you can do. I mean, it IS the Ultimate Chimera.

There’s only a 10-second time limit!

Grab the Home-Run Bat on the ground and do a smash attack with it before the time runs out!

Fly! Flyyy!

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/various/images/various08/various08_071016e.jpg
Compete for the longest distance.

Flight distances are recorded for each character. Go! Break the record! Set your own!!

But this time... there are four differences!

1: The stadium platform is protected by a shield.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/various/images/various08/various08_071016f.jpg
Whoa! This nice feature keeps you from falling.

If you don’t put some force into it, you won’t break through the shield, so you can pummel Sandbag to your heart’s content. This will surely allow you to string together some new combos.

2: Two players can play together.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/various/images/various08/various08_071016g.jpg
Incredible! Two can enjoy it!

As a tag team, you can challenge yourselves to set even greater records. You’ll have to work perfectly together, though.

3: Two-player alternating play.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/various/images/various08/various08_071016h.jpg
Compete for distance in two matches!

It’s just like a real track and field event. You compete to see who can send Sandbag flying the farthest.

4: Online competitions.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/various/images/various08/various08_071016i.jpg
You can’t tell from this shot, but this is an online match.

This option can be found under With Friends. And it supports both the two-player cooperative and two-player alternating modes.

This is some rather rich functionality. This mode alone could take up a lot of your time. Amazing, isn’t it?

Believe it or not, you can use four different controller types with this game! But everyone seems to be most interested in how the Wii Remote works when held sideways.

Please allow me to explain.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/howto/basic/images/basic07/basic07_071017a.gif

+Control Pad : Move

Press left or right to walk and press up to jump.

If you’re in a real hurry, press twice. Press left or right twice to dash and press down for a short time to fall through some platforms.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/howto/basic/images/basic07/basic07_071017b.jpg
Press sideways twice to dash!

2 Button : Basic Moves

Just press the button for a standard attack. Press it while pressing a direction on the +Control Pad for a strong attack.

You can perform smash attacks in one of the following ways:

1: Press the 1 Button and the 2 Button at the same time.
2: Press the 2 Button and any direction on the +Control Pad at the same time.

Just pick whichever one is easiest for you!!

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/howto/basic/images/basic07/basic07_071017c.jpg
Press the 2 Button at the same time you press up,
sideways or down!

1 Button : Special Moves

The direction you press will determine what kind of special move you do.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/howto/basic/images/basic07/basic07_071017d.jpg
You have four special moves depending on the direction you pick: neutral, up, sideways and down.

B Button : Shield

This is in a kind of hard-to-press area, but the button for your shield is near your left index finger.

To dodge, hold down the B Button and press in a direction.

To grab, hold down the B Button and press the 2 Button.

To throw an item, hold down the B Button and press the 2 Button.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/howto/basic/images/basic07/basic07_071017e.jpg
Using the – Button is the same as pressing
B Button and 2 Button. Grab away!

A Button : Taunt

That’s all!

Right now, to grab a Smash Ball, you have to beat on it, not just touch it. Don’t forget!

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/howto/basic/images/basic07/basic07_071017f.jpg
Be the first to pummel it!

When you get a Smash Ball, try a standard special move. In other words, just press the button for your special move without a direction. You will then perform your Final Smash.

This is the same for all control schemes, so keep that in mind.

Is it really possible to enjoy playing the game without the Control Stick?

No need for concern – I bet you can play it quite smoothly and simply...maybe. How about a little mental training before the time comes when you actually control it?

Oh and on the US site, he says:

On October 18 at the E for All (Entertainment For All Expo) in Los Angeles, people will be able to play Brawl. And (perhaps boldly), it will be available for play with the Wii Remote. Is that really going to be OK?

So if thats a public event, maybe you can head over if you're near-by and if it's not going to cost a fortune to get in.

There are only a few nonsense stages in the only "slightly" nonsensical Smash Bros. series. But there is no stage more nonsensical than this one.

PictoChat?! What is THIS?!

It’s a fun little sketch-and-chat application with wireless functionality that’s built into the Nintendo DS!

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/stages/images/stage15/stage15_071022a.jpg
And if you turn it into a stage, it looks like this! BAM!

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/stages/images/stage15/stage15_071022b.jpg
At first, there’s nothing there. It’s just flat.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/stages/images/stage15/stage15_071022c.jpg
If you wait a bit, terrain gets drawn in with a few stylus strokes!

Of course, you can climb up on the doodles.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/stages/images/stage15/stage15_071022d.jpg
You may get knocked about by side winds.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/stages/images/stage15/stage15_071022e.jpg
There may be things you want to ride on moving around.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/stages/images/stage15/stage15_071022f.jpg
Hot! HOT! Are these flames?

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/stages/images/stage15/stage15_071022g.jpg
This looks solid! But it’s also flat?!

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/stages/images/stage15/stage15_071022h.jpg
Wow! A whale!

The doodles that appear will disappear after a while, and then something else will get drawn.

Oh, and on this stage, you’ll be able to enjoy the music from the Mii Channel and Wii Shop Channel, too.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/stages/images/stage15/stage15_071022i.jpg

A target-breaking mode has appeared in every game in the Smash series. It’s a mode that challenges you to break ten targets within a given time limit – basically, a game for those who salivate at the thought of speed runs.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/various/images/various09/various09_071024a.jpg
Break the targets!

The mode is set outdoors now, giving it a refreshing visual appearance. This time, there are five different maps of varying difficulty – challenges you can take on with your favourite character.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/various/images/various09/various09_071024b.jpg
Each of the five maps is distinctive.

Some levels even have items that you may be able to use to cut your time even more.

Use all of your character’s skills to beat your own personal records!

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/various/images/various09/various09_071024c.jpg
This is the pause screen.

If you fail, you can pause the game and try again. You can also check out the level layout while paused.

There is another announcement I’d like to make simultaneously...

This time, you can view replays. What this means is, the game records what you did in brawls or in Target Smash and lets you review it.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/various/images/various09/various09_071024d.jpg
About three minutes worth of replay data can be recorded.

It’s even possible to send replays of your most amazing times to your Wii Friends! If you compete against each other, things will surely heat up.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/various/images/various09/various09_071024e.jpg
Fire it off!

It feels great to use all of your knowledge and techniques to shave a hundredth of a second off your time. But you don’t have to do that to enjoy these features, so I hope you’ll give it a try regardless.

Up Special Move: Super Dedede Jump

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/characters/images/kingdedede/kingdedede_071026a.jpg

Look! That’s a serious jump!

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/characters/images/kingdedede/kingdedede_071026b.jpg

And he lands HARD!

King Dedede’s great jump is his speciality! But he doesn’t have much freedom while jumping, and his vulnerability when he lands is pretty significant.

That said, if things look bad, just tap down on the Control Stick.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/characters/images/kingdedede/kingdedede_071026c.jpg
You can flip over and cancel it in mid-air.

However, if you try to cancel just before landing, you’ll make a fool of yourself, and you’ll be vulnerable for even longer, so watch out.

Side Special Move: Waddle Dee Toss

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/characters/images/kingdedede/kingdedede_071026d.jpg
Just throw them out there.

He pulls out Waddle Dees from who knows where and throws them. The Waddle Dees then waddle around afterwards.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/characters/images/kingdedede/kingdedede_071026e.jpg
Occasionally a Waddle Doo appears...

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/characters/images/kingdedede/kingdedede_071026f.jpg
...and Gordo, too.

Down Special Move: Jet Hammer
This time, King Dedede’s hammer is actually mechanised. The head’s rotation is powered by a motor.

And it can do this.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/characters/images/kingdedede/kingdedede_071026g.jpg
Whoa! What is this?!?

If you hold down the Control Stick and the special-move button simultaneously, you can charge up his hammer. And you can unleash it in one blow!

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/characters/images/kingdedede/kingdedede_071026h.jpg
The power of the jet multiplies the destructive force!

You can even walk around with it charged up, but you can’t save the charge by pressing the shield button. Also, if you charge it up too much, it will increase your own damage, so be careful.

You can create your own stages this time?! No way. REALLY?! With a feature like that, won’t I be able to play this game forever?!

http://www.smashbros.com/en_us/gamemode/various/images/various10/various10_071029a.jpg
Apparently it’s true...!!!

Those who enjoy a little effort may be able to enjoy this stage builder for the rest of their lives.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_us/gamemode/various/images/various10/various10_071029b.jpg
First, start from the initialize setting.

You start by choosing the size of the stage, the background pattern, and the music that will play. Oops! Sorry. For music, you’ll only be able to choose from the songs you have available.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_us/gamemode/various/images/various10/various10_071029c.jpg
This is the edit screen!

Basically, you choose parts from the palette on the side and place them in the field.

The controls vary by controller, but each one can do the following:

Flip parts left to right
Enlarge or shrink parts
Zoom in or out on the screen
Swap palettes
Erase

...Among other things.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_us/gamemode/various/images/various10/various10_071029d.jpg
Just place terrain however you like. Chuckity-chuckity-CHUCK!

http://www.smashbros.com/en_us/gamemode/various/images/various10/various10_071029e.jpg
Then try it out!

Modify it and try it... Repeat as necessary. Make your own ideal stage!

http://www.smashbros.com/en_us/gamemode/various/images/various10/various10_071029f.jpg
Mmm... That’s amazing.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/various/images/various10/various10_071029g.jpg
And you can save a name and a comment for the stage.

You can change the music on the save screen. Choose something that matches the mood of your stage.

And I’m glad to say that this feature is compatible with SD cards. You don’t have to worry about size, so make as many stages as you like.

Also, if you’ve registered someone as both a Wii Friend and a Smash friend, you’ll be able to send custom stages to each other.

Now, for those who hate putting effort into such things, we’ve also prepared something for people like you to enjoy.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/various/images/various10/various10_071029h.jpg
"Submit"...?

That’s right! You can use your Wi-Fi connection to send stages you’ve made to Nintendo! (However, you can’t submit repeatedly. Maybe just once per day?)

Every day, a stage selected from the entire daily collection will be sent from Nintendo to your Wii. A stage made by someone else will come to you over the Internet once per day!

DUN DUN DUNNNNNN! That’s the shocking truth. This means you’ll be able to experience a new stage every day – the flavour of the day, if you will. However, the plan is for that stage to vanish once one day has passed. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime encounter.

You can submit in both the Snapshots mode and the Stage Builder mode, allowing everyone to enjoy the creations of others. The fun of sharing is one of the ways that I wanted to take advantage of Wi-Fi for something other than pure battling.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/various/images/various10/various10_071029i.jpg
Today’s stage has lots of traps...

This is our current ideal plan. We still don’t know the exact service period. And future fine-tuning may result in changes to this feature.

But for now, please look forward to it!

This is the classic single-player mode – hence the name, Classic.

In this mode, you try to clear each stage as you go.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/various/images/various11/various11_071030a.jpg
Choose your favourite character and a difficulty level, then start the match!

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/various/images/various11/various11_071030b.jpg
Fight whoever appears!

The world you fight in is pretty much determined by the stage number. Stage 1 is based on The Legend of Zelda. Stage 3 is based on Pokémon. And each time, the characters are chosen randomly.

You’ll also find that the status of enemies and rules of the match vary slightly to include things like Giant matches, Metal matches and Team battles.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/various/images/various11/various11_071030c.jpg
Heart icons indicate your allies.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/various/images/various11/various11_071030d.jpg
You cleared the stage!

So... You just keep playing until you reach the end. Easy to understand, right?

Huh? You’re wondering what the coins on the Stage Clear screen are for? Um, you think they’re there to make it look livelier?

No, no. You earn and save these up little by little as you play. And supposedly you can use them somewhere. But no – you don’t use them to shop.

The summit? The summit of what? If you must know, I suppose it’s the summit of Icicle Mountain. And I guess there are vegetables there after all.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/stages/images/stage16/stage16_071031a.jpg
In other words, it’s an Ice Climber stage.

At first glance, it appears to be a normal glacial peak. But after you fight for a while...

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/stages/images/stage16/stage16_071031b.jpg
A pop! A crack! It’s breaking?!

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/stages/images/stage16/stage16_071031c.jpg
Th-the terrain is sliding downhill!

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/stages/images/stage16/stage16_071031d.jpg
It’s finally arrived at the sea. And with a splash, too!

Hmm. Talk about hectic. And rumour has it, you can’t get careless once you’ve reached the sea.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/stages/images/stage16/stage16_071031e.jpg
The polar bear is pushing the iceberg deeper!

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/stages/images/stage16/stage16_071031f.jpg
A fish leaps out of the water!

I feel like I’ve seen that fish before somewhere... Where could it have been?

I think the stage builder could be one of the reasons it was pushed back. The guy that does the updates keeps saying stuff about being unsure how stage builder will be after fine-tuning etc.
Still, it's worth the wait.

Now that we've had a few updates that took us by surprise (MyMusic, Stage Builder, 2-player Sub-Space) does anyone have anything they think or hope will be in?

Heh heh heh. I got it.

Meta Knight has got the Smash Ball. Behold!

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/characters/images/metaknight/metaknight_071101a.jpg
Take this!

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/characters/images/metaknight/metaknight_071101b.jpg
...

He swirls his cape out in a wide sweep, but if he swings and misses, nothing happens. It’s a waste of the Smash Ball. Be sure to hit with that swing of the cape.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/characters/images/metaknight/metaknight_071101c.jpg
This time, behold!

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/characters/images/metaknight/metaknight_071101d.jpg
The field is gradually engulfed in darkness.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/characters/images/metaknight/metaknight_071101e.jpg
Toh!

The field is swallowed by darkness, and Meta Knight slices strongly through it. Enemies get launched helplessly. Talk about cool.

But there is even more coolness to this move.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/characters/images/metaknight/metaknight_071101f.jpg
If there are others besides the enemy you hit with the cape...

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/characters/images/metaknight/metaknight_071101g.jpg
...they get cut in the darkness, too!

So, while this move’s initial attack range is relatively narrow, if you hit with it, almost everyone suffers. Aim well and sally forth.

Most of the time, they do. The UK got Super Paper Mario 5 or 6 months after the US and we had a game freezing glitch on level 2-2. Thats the only time I can recall a Nintendo game having a serious bug in it though.

They said they would put up an address for UK gamers to send the glitched game to and they would send a working copy back to them for free but I still can't find the address anywhere online. Nevermind, I'm trading it in for the Simpsons game anyway.

The 2nd update today is music from Fire Emblem but I can't post it here. It has lyrics in latin which translate to:

Fire Emblem, companions walk
The endless path together.

In the wavering shadow of spite,
Our home is faced by the oncoming spear,
Engulfed in flames.

I keep that unforgettable day in my heart
And now rise up together with my companions.

Fire Emblem, our bond shall be never broken.

We hold fast to protect tomorrow
And the one who awaits our return.

Fire Emblem, light gathers on the flag we unfurl.

Fire Emblem, we gaze upon the multitude of stars,
Gripping our blades.

If we do not bring light to the darkness in these lands,
The shooting stars will soar over a wasteland.

Fire Emblem, on whom does the morning sun shine
As she climbs over the edge of battle?

A number of items from past Smash games appear in this one as well. But, of course, there are naturally many people who have never played any of those games. And even if you have, I still think I ought to explain these.

It’s not all of them, but I would like to introduce a few.

Beam Sword

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/items/images/item11/item11_071106a.jpg
It’s a blade of light – the Beam Sword.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/items/images/item11/item11_071106b.jpg
This time it gets REALLY long!

Fire Flower

Hold down the button to release a fire burst!

Freezie

Throw it at someone to freeze them.

Home-Run Bat

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/items/images/item11/item11_071106e.jpg
Do a side-smash to hit a home run!

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/items/images/item11/item11_071106f.jpg
This time, everyone has a different stance.

Party Ball

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/items/images/item11/item11_071106g.jpg
Items pour out from inside.

Super Mushroom

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/items/images/item11/item11_071106h.jpg
When you get the mushroom...

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/items/images/item11/item11_071106i.jpg

These are just some of the items that intensify the slapstick nature of this game. You must master them all!

Surely you’ve learned how to shield to protect yourself. Have you learned that yet? Good. You’ve learned.

Then next up is grabbing. And throwing!

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/howto/basic/images/basic08/basic08_071107a.jpg
Press the attack button while shielding...

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/howto/basic/images/basic08/basic08_071107b.jpg
And grab at your opponent!

If you press the attack button while shielding, you’ll grab. Give it a try next time you’re shielding.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/howto/basic/images/basic08/basic08_071107c.jpg
Block your enemy’s attack with your shield!

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/howto/basic/images/basic08/basic08_071107d.jpg
Then just press the attack button to grab your enemy!

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/howto/basic/images/basic08/basic08_071107e.jpg
Tilt the Control Stick in any direction you like to throw!

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/howto/basic/images/basic08/basic08_071107f.jpg
Then pursue with combo attacks!

And so on.

Grabs are also effective against enemies that are protecting themselves with their own shields. Shield against attacks, then grab. Or dodge. If you can understand this flow, you’ll find they add a dimension that changes the simple charging attack.

At any rate, get in the habit of shielding when you’re in trouble. Then you can think about what comes next.

There’s a character named Ness who has appeared in the Smash Bros. series up until now, and Lucas is very similar. They are from the same family of PK users.

But Lucas’s physical combat style is quite different. By which I mean he doesn’t have the same standard moves.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/characters/images/lucas/lucas_071108a.jpg
His strong up attack is a mentally-powered flip kick.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/characters/images/lucas/lucas_071108b.jpg
The finish of his back air attack is a meteor smash.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/characters/images/lucas/lucas_071108d.jpg
Oh! Is he grabbing the edge with his rope snake?!

Side Special Move: PK Fire

This is also quite different from Ness’s.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/characters/images/lucas/lucas_071108e.jpg
It flies perfectly sideways, even in the air.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/characters/images/lucas/lucas_071108f.jpg
The flame pillar explodes!

Standard Special Move: PK Freeze

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/characters/images/lucas/lucas_071108g.jpg
If you charge it up and control it...

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/characters/images/lucas/lucas_071108h.jpg
...you can freeze your opponents!

And even more threatening is his PK Thunder. For those of you unfamiliar with the last game, or the one before that, remember this well.

Up Special Move: PK Thunder

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/characters/images/lucas/lucas_071108i.jpg
You guide the PK Thunder with the Control Stick...

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/characters/images/lucas/lucas_071108j.jpg
...and hit yourself with it to launch!

Doing this helps you recover.

The angle you launch at depends upon the position at which the PK Thunder hits you. This launch also makes for a rather powerful attack, so I think it’s fine to even try it unexpectedly.

Down Special Move: PSI Magnet

This move absorbs the energy of projectile and other attacks and uses it to recover Lucas’s damage. It has a wide range of effectiveness, so give it a try when you get the chance.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/characters/images/lucas/lucas_071108k.jpg
If an enemy uses a projectile, that’s your chance.

Norfair is the location in Metroid where the enemy boss Ridley was. There was a lot of lava, and it seemed like a rather hot area.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/stages/images/stage17/stage17_071109a.jpg
Whoa! That looks hot.

As you can imagine, the lava level will indeed rise and cover the platforms. It’s dangerous to touch it.

That dangerous-to-the-touch lava comes flowing from a number of places, so be careful.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/stages/images/stage17/stage17_071109c.jpg
EEEEEEEEEEK! It’s a lava wave!

The tension rises. Yes.

When the lava wave appears, a single safe area will also appear. If you can get in, you’ll be OK...but surely there will be quite a battle for that spot. Yet another bit of back and forth.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/stages/images/stage17/stage17_071109d.jpg
"Let me in!" "I’m not letting YOU in!"

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/stages/images/stage17/stage17_071109e.jpg
It even has hatches that close in emergencies. Ahh.

You can just about dodge the massive lava wave with a great jump, but it’s a little difficult. Besides, you KNOW you want to win the battle for that safe area.

If you want to show your opponent a little flair, you can do moves unrelated to battle – it’s called taunting. You do it with the +Control Pad, except when using the Wii Remote and Nunchuk.

This time, you can do one of three different taunts, depending on the direction you press the +Control Pad!

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/howto/technique/images/technique07/technique07_071113a.jpg
Up taunt: He twirls his sword twice and sheaths it.

Down taunt: Is this his mysterious pose from the Nintendo 64 version?!

There are a variety of patterns for you to enjoy.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/howto/technique/images/technique07/technique07_071113d.jpg
He takes off his hat and spins around whimsically.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/howto/technique/images/technique07/technique07_071113e.jpg

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/howto/technique/images/technique07/technique07_071113f.jpg
He gives a shout on the spot.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/howto/technique/images/technique07/technique07_071113g.jpg
He gives a three-fingered "W" salute.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/howto/technique/images/technique07/technique07_071113h.jpg
He thrusts his sword in the ground and crosses his arms.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/howto/technique/images/technique07/technique07_071113i.jpg
He spins his feet and says "Too slow..."

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/howto/technique/images/technique07/technique07_071113j.jpg
...

With Wii Remote + Nunchuk control, taunts are handled with the 1 Button (up taunt), the 2 Button (down taunt) and the 1 and 2 Buttons simultaneously (side taunt).

Be kind to beginners! If all you do in brawls is beat up people who don’t know left from right, they’ll never understand the rules of the game, right?

So until now, I’ve always made sure to include handicaps in each game in the series.

But, I began to think that there isn’t much thrill in just making yourself weaker, so I changed the system.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/various/images/various12/various12_071114a.jpg
First, find the Handicap option on the Rules screen.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/various/images/various12/various12_071114b.jpg
Then you’ll see something new.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/various/images/various12/various12_071114c.jpg
Click-click-click! Ratchet up the handicap.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/various/images/various12/various12_071114d.jpg
You start with your initial damage meter boosted!

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/various/images/various12/various12_071114e.jpg
Even when you reappear.

The strength of each character doesn’t change, so then you can show your skills to your opponent!

Also, you can use this not only for handicapping, but also for starting all players at the same damage – it’ll give you matches with a slightly different feel.

Now, I’ve also kept the auto-handicap feature. This gradually increases the starting damage for the winner of the match.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/various/images/various12/various12_071114f.jpg
Choose the Auto setting from the same option.

But, since he has so many peculiar moves, I wanted to explain them again.

Standard Special Move: Mach Tornado
http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/characters/images/metaknight/metaknight_071115a.jpg
Suck them up!

Your inertia carries you left and right. Tap the button to rise up off the ground a bit.

Side Special Move: Drill Rush
http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/characters/images/metaknight/metaknight_071115b.jpg
Rush!!!

You spin like a drill, ploughing into people. You can also change your direction slightly.

Push your enemies up into the air!

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/characters/images/metaknight/metaknight_071115d.jpg
Of course, you can push them down, too.

Up Special Move: Shuttle Loop

Rise up while launching your sword up...

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/characters/images/metaknight/metaknight_071115f.jpg
You can also flutter through the air and glide.

This is a move you use to glide. It’s kind of like Kirby’s wing ability.

Down Special Move: Dimensional Cape
http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/characters/images/metaknight/metaknight_071115g.jpg
That familiar move from the trailer.

He wraps himself in his cape, disappears, and reappears with this move.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/characters/images/metaknight/metaknight_071115h.jpg
Tilt the stick to move the position where he’ll reappear!

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/characters/images/metaknight/metaknight_071115i.jpg
If you’re pressing the attack button, you’ll unleash a surprise attack as you reappear!

Use the Dimensional Cape as a precursor to an attack. If you just can’t get the opportunity, then forget about attacking.

The 2nd update today is the music "Kirby: Meta Knight’s Revenge". It's for the Halberd stage. The update explains it:

I was just thinking how it’s been more than ten years since I made this game...

It was in Kirby Super Star that Meta Knight rode out on the Battleship Halberd to try and conquer Dream Land. This is a jazz arrangement of the music from back then.
WELL? How do you like it?!

After going with the "serious touch" of the Halberd for the Kirby stage, I’m now thinking that maybe this overly peppy song is a little incongruous...

Even among Smash players, there are some people who just aren’t that good at action games. With that in mind, I’ve been thinking about how I can convey the fun of Smash to newcomers. I’ve been thinking about this type of thing since long before I joined this industry.

So, for this game, I’ve prepared a new kind of mode. It’s called Spectator, and you’ll find it in the With Anyone menu. If I had to describe it in a word, it would be "watching"!

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/wi-fi/images/wi-fi02/wi-fi02_071116a.jpg
You can enjoy watching matches between other people!

This mode is a service where Nintendo uses Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection to send the data for games played between other people to every Smash household.

Match selection is handled automatically, and absolutely no names of any players can be seen. It feels like there’s a continuous broadcast of matches on your television! Even if you don’t play, you can enjoy the battles of other characters!

And at the beginning of each match, you can even bet coins on the character you think will win.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/wi-fi/images/wi-fi02/wi-fi02_071116b.jpg
I’ll bet some coins. I’ve got a winner!

Glean what hints you can from the stages and combatants and try to deduce the winner.

Of course, if your pick wins, your coin count will increase! And the more players there are in a match, the higher the payout. There may even be extra prizes.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/wi-fi/images/wi-fi02/wi-fi02_071116c.jpg
Even if you lose, you can get some stickers.

Just to make sure there’s no mistaking that just watching a match can be fun, we’ll be passing out stickers left and right.

For those of you who want to co-operate with our data collection for Spectator mode, set Allow Spectators to Yes in your Wi-Fi Options. This will result in your play data occasionally being sent to Nintendo.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/wi-fi/images/wi-fi02/wi-fi02_071116d.jpg
This setting is in your Wi-Fi Options.

The content that is broadcast is the same for everyone in the same country (if your connection timing is the same), so it should be fun to have people in different environments watch and cheer the same match.

To be shocked by impressive play, or to bust a gut laughing at some accident will be quite fun! Perhaps you can use it as reference for your own matches.

Hopefully this mode is something that even people who aren’t good at games can enjoy.

Yeah, but how does betting work when the names of the players are hidden from you? Its pretty much just blind guessing then. Unless you can place bets mid-match or something.

Vietnamese Crippler

You're just betting on who you think will win. What does it matter if you see the name or not :-\

Lock Jaw
11-17-2007, 12:01 AM
Because then people could develop "reps" and you'd kinda know who is the best bet. Otherwise they're all just blank random faces and you're just betting on "Link" or "Mario" hoping that the player is good.

Loose Cannon

Iceberg

The Ice Climbers’ Final Smash is Iceberg!

Calling it Iceberg is a bit problematic. I mean, it’s not like...

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/characters/images/iceclimbers/iceclimbers_071119a.jpg
...Ahh! I guess Iceberg IS rather appropriate!

When you get the Smash Ball and do your move...

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/characters/images/iceclimbers/iceclimbers_071119b.jpg
...the duo do a high-five, and...

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/characters/images/iceclimbers/iceclimbers_071119c.jpg
CRRRRRSSSSSSHHHHH!

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/characters/images/iceclimbers/iceclimbers_071119d.jpg
It even happens in the big city, just like this...

Ice doesn’t just make the available ledges smaller and more slippery, but it also damages your opponents!

But, of course, the Ice Climbers can handle it no problem. They look as cool and refreshed as ever.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/characters/images/iceclimbers/iceclimbers_071119e.jpg
Sometimes, you can even freeze opponents.
Now that’s just cold!

If you brawl for a long time, there is one thing you will definitely start to think: "What can I do that will help me be able to win?"
For that, I’ve implemented a training mode to help you get to know the characters.
http://www.smashbros.com/en_us/gamemode/various/images/various13/various13_071120a.jpg (http://www.smashbros.com/en_us/gamemode/various/images/various13/various13_071120a-l.jpg)
At first glance, nothing about this screen seems unusual.
Bothersome displays are hidden at first. The settings screen appears when you pause the game.
http://www.smashbros.com/en_us/gamemode/various/images/various13/various13_071120b.jpg (http://www.smashbros.com/en_us/gamemode/various/images/various13/various13_071120b-l.jpg)

You can produce lots of items.
http://www.smashbros.com/en_us/gamemode/various/images/various13/various13_071120d.jpg (http://www.smashbros.com/en_us/gamemode/various/images/various13/various13_071120d-l.jpg)
You can put in three computer opponents, and jack their damage meters way up.
http://www.smashbros.com/en_us/gamemode/various/images/various13/various13_071120e.jpg (http://www.smashbros.com/en_us/gamemode/various/images/various13/various13_071120e-l.jpg)
And you can see how much damage different combos do.
http://www.smashbros.com/en_us/gamemode/various/images/various13/various13_071120f.jpg (http://www.smashbros.com/en_us/gamemode/various/images/various13/various13_071120f-l.jpg)
You can even put it in slow motion.
(But...you can’t tell that from a screen shot.)
You need to know the moves, whether you’re trying to hit with them or avoid them—this is especially true of Final Smashes.
This mode is particularly helpful with that.

Hurry, Fox! Run!
This fearsome item practically covers entire stages in a massive, engulfing explosion. It’s best to try to use it in a spot that leaves few places for enemies to flee. Or something like that.
It does seem that they occasionally fail to explode. You might throw it, only to watch it not detonate. In those cases, you’ll want to be careful, because you never know when it might go off.
Speaking of duds, certain Pokémon that explode also sometimes fail to detonate.

But, there are also some moves that continue charging even after you release the button... Huh???

Samus’s Standard Special Move: Charge Shot

For these moves, when you press the special-move button again, it unleashes the move at the power level you charged it to.
Also, with these moves, you can move around while charged by charging the move to the maximum limit or by pressing the shield button to cancel the charge.

It may be that it’s less advantageous on larger stages and more advantageous on smaller ones. There are a variety of moves like this that have clear advantages and disadvantages depending on the terrain.

My brother killed the PC with some virus or other so I couldn't post the updates. The PC still isn't working right so I don't know when I'll be posting them again. It doesn't seem like I missed much anyway.

I was surprised about the Sin & Punishment guy being in at all even if it is an AT.

It’s the return of Events! This is a single-player mode in which you battle through predetermined situations.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/various/images/various16/various16_071129a.jpg
This is the Events selection screen.

Oh! The pictures make it easy to understand.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/various/images/various16/various16_071129b.jpg
And it has different difficulty settings!

For these, a harder setting is probably more exciting, but you can go ahead and set it however you like.

For example, you’ll find these kinds of situations:

Two Trouble Kings
http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/various/images/various16/various16_071129c.jpg
Character: Mario
Bowser and King Dedede battle as a team!
And Mario stands alone against them.

Pink Ball Repulsion
http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/various/images/various16/various16_071129d.jpg
Character: Meta Knight
Kirby must not be allowed on the Battleship Halberd!
Blast Kirby off before the platform lands on the Halberd!

Cleaning House in Skyworld
http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/various/images/various16/various16_071129e.jpg
Character: Pit
Destroy all the terrain in Skyworld!
Wario both gets in the way and helps out?

Sleeping in the Eggs
http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/various/images/various16/various16_071129f.jpg
Character: Yoshi
Using Yoshi’s Egg Lay standard special move,
put both enemies inside eggs simultaneously!

Dark Link Duel
http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/various/images/various16/various16_071129g.jpg
Character: Link
It’s a fated battle with your own shadow.
This is a stamina-based match.

High scores are recorded for each challenge at each difficulty level. You don’t just clear these challenges – competing for time will magnify the fun.

Enjoy Smash’s chance meetings between a variety of characters!

Probably at first until you do a few and unlock more, like in Melee.

I just got the new issue of Official Nintendo Magazine and had a quick flick through. In their preview of Brawl, they said it'll be out in the UK in Spring 2008. I think they could be right considering they said it was going to be on-line a month before the Dojo updates confirmed it.

First, take a look...

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/stages/images/stage18/stage18_071130a.jpg
Could this be...

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/stages/images/stage18/stage18_071130b.jpg
...the Temple?!

This is the Temple stage from the last instalment, Super Smash Bros. Melee.

I think that based on my updates so far, you probably understand that we’ve created plenty of stages.

But we wanted to do more, so we’ve brought back a number of stages that appeared in the last game.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/stages/images/stage18/stage18_071130c.jpg
It’s...big...

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/stages/images/stage18/stage18_071130d.jpg
It’s perfect for those who like pursuit.

We’ve tried to create an exact replica, but there may be a few areas that differ from the last game. I hope you understand.

In general, the Melee stages have the same background music as in the last game, but we’ve also prepared some tracks like this.

"Zelda II: Adventure of Link: Great Temple/Temple" (0:54) (http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/stages/stage18.html)
(its at the bottom of the page - Drakul)

Because then people could develop "reps" and you'd kinda know who is the best bet.
I like that idea. It wouldn't be hard to have "reps" and maybe the better rep the player has, the less you win for betting on them winning.

Another thing came to me a minute ago. I think King K.Rool might be in Brawl. In one of the Sub Space videos, Mario gets hit by a huge cannon ball, just like the ones K. Rool used. I know thats not evidence in itself but remember Bowsers Koopa Troopas stole DKs Bananas in another video.
So DK has to deal with Marios nemesis (Bowser) and Mario has to deal with DKs nemesis (K. Rool).

So I think he'll be in, maybe as just a boss, but he'll be in. What do you think?

The Wii console includes a function called Wii Friends, but you will register a separate list of Smash friends.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/wi-fi/images/wi-fi03/wi-fi03_071203a.jpg
That’s your Friend Code in the top-right.

Please exchange these numbers with your friends. Write a note, do it over the phone, or send it by e-mail – just share your numbers with each other.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/wi-fi/images/wi-fi03/wi-fi03_071203b.jpg
Then input your friend’s Friend Code.

Once you’ve both input your codes, it’ll look something like this.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/wi-fi/images/wi-fi03/wi-fi03_071203c.jpg
Oh! It comes with comments.

You can enter your own icon and comments.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/wi-fi/images/wi-fi03/wi-fi03_071203d.jpg
This is where you enter your short taunt messages.

The preparation ends there. After this, you won’t have to do it every time.

So, let’s play a game! In that case, someone has to enter someone else’s game.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/wi-fi/images/wi-fi03/wi-fi03_071203e.jpg
You can see if they’re online or hosting a match.

If you want to play together, just select that person’s name and choose OK!

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/wi-fi/images/wi-fi03/wi-fi03_071203g.jpg
Join someone who is hosting a match.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/wi-fi/images/wi-fi03/wi-fi03_071203h.jpg
Once all participants select OK...

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/wi-fi/images/wi-fi03/wi-fi03_071203i.jpg
...you can play.

Yep. Simple.

Simple is best.

By the way, the circle at the top-right of your Friend Roster approximates the connection quality of your last connection. The closer it is to blue, the smoother you’ll be able to play.

A Smash Ball appears! The tension rises. Since it gives you an attack as powerful as the name Final Smash implies, everyone will battle frantically to get it.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/howto/technique/images/technique09/technique09_071205a.jpg
There it is! Get it! Get it!

You can’t get the Smash Ball by simply touching it. You have to bash it and smash it many times until the player who breaks the Smash Ball gets it.

The Smash Ball’s endurance diminishes with each hit and with time.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/howto/technique/images/technique09/technique09_071205b.jpg
How should you pursue it? Even this becomes a battle.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/howto/technique/images/technique09/technique09_071205c.jpg
Yes! I got it!

Once a character gets it and begins glowing on standby, he or she just does a standard special move to unleash the Final Smash. Just press the B Button without any directional input.

It depends on the particular Final Smash, but simply pressing the button at a random time or place might not work to your advantage.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/howto/technique/images/technique09/technique09_071205d.jpg
Some can be dodged fairly well...

So pick a position that your move will strike from. Or create conditions under which you will definitely hit your foes. Do all of this while glowing on standby.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/howto/technique/images/technique09/technique09_071205e.jpg
Now just jump up and fire off that Final Smash!

However, if the character on standby gets hit, he or she may fumble the Smash Ball!

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/howto/technique/images/technique09/technique09_071205f.jpg
Even if someone gets it,
attack is often the best form of defence!

Do you use it as soon as you get it? Or save it for later? Do you run from an enemy who got it? Or do you chase him? You’ll need some instantaneous situational decision-making!

And then there’s an element known as the Pity Final Smash. Once a significant point advantage is reached, the losing player is given a bonus chance. When you get this, you will reappear after a KO in Final Smash standby mode.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/howto/technique/images/technique09/technique09_071205g.jpg
It’s OK to give this out, isn’t it?

Now, if you don’t want to use Final Smashes whatsoever, you can restrict the appearance of this item in the Item Switch. If you just turn Smash Balls off, you’ll be set.

The game-changing Final Smash. Using it is fun. Running from it is fun, too.

Waddle Dee Army

King Dedede’s Final Smash is a mountain of Waddle Dees called the Waddle Dee Army!

You can’t tell from a picture, but the speed of these Waddle Dees is quite a bit faster than the ones he normally calls. You’ll need to watch out to make sure you don’t suddenly get swept off the screen.

But the most dangerous thing of all is that the spike-headed Gordos are also mixed into the crowd.

Join a quick and simple brawl against someone, somewhere! If you’re not going to be playing with a friend, this is the mode you’ll tend to use.

This time, we’ll take a look at how it flows.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/wi-fi/images/wi-fi04/wi-fi04_071207a.jpg
The Wii console is trying to connect in earnest! And it succeeds!

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/wi-fi/images/wi-fi04/wi-fi04_071207b.jpg
Here you choose With Anyone.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/wi-fi/images/wi-fi04/wi-fi04_071207c.jpg
You could also choose Team Battle,
but we’ll choose Basic Brawl here.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/wi-fi/images/wi-fi04/wi-fi04_071207d.jpg
You go straight to the character selection screen.

Huh? We’re already at character selection? That’s right. You don’t make any rooms.

At this point, you’re already requesting a match. If you connect to someone, you’ll see their status at the bottom of the screen.

Character selection is limited to 45 seconds. If time runs out, your character will be chosen for you at random, so make your choices quickly so as not to make others wait.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/wi-fi/images/wi-fi04/wi-fi04_071207e.jpg
Then you go to stage selection.

You can cast one vote for the stage you want to play. A stage is chosen by lottery from among those voted on by the players.

Also, the items that are turned off in the item switch are also determined by lottery.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/wi-fi/images/wi-fi04/wi-fi04_071207f.jpg
Practise on Sandbag while you wait...

Then just wait until you get everyone together.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/wi-fi/images/wi-fi04/wi-fi04_071207g.jpg
Then the match begins!!

Isn’t that simple? You don’t have to bother with any settings. You just choose characters and stages.

Names won’t be shown and messages won’t be sent. Neither your identity nor your opponents’ will be known, so you can play without any worries.

By the way, have you ever had an experience where your opponent was disconnected and the match never came to fruition? Like when you started with four players, but ended up with only one?

I don’t like that feeling, so I’ve tried to counter it.

If you get cut off, your character will get taken over by the CPU without your opponents even knowing – it pinch hits for you!

http://www.smashbros.com/en_uk/gamemode/wi-fi/images/wi-fi04/wi-fi04_071207h.jpg
Hold on! You can’t tell it’s a CPU!

That’s epic! Can we really do this? Wouldn’t you say it’s way better than having all your opponents drop out?

However, we won’t be swapping in CPU characters when you’re playing With Friends. Sorry about that.

And there is one more important thing...

When you have a battle mode that runs online like Basic Brawl, the problem of what to do with hidden characters arises. If one of your opponents chooses a character you haven’t unlocked yet, it will be spoiled for you immediately.

But even without this mode, given the proliferation of the Internet these days, the existence of hidden characters is going to get exposed anyway.

So, this time I’m moving in the direction of not being too hung up on hidden characters.

You can earn most characters by playing through Adventure Mode: The Subspace Emissary. For those of you who look forward to those encounters, I recommend you clear this mode before playing Basic Brawl.

And as the case has always been, I’ve made it so you can play the characters you unlock in battles.
